Missing SC man fell into shredder at Greer recycling company, coroner’s office finds

A man missing since early May fell into a shredding machine in an Upstate recycling center and died, tests show.

Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said small pieces of a human body were found around the machine that Duncan Alexander Burrell Gordon, 20, was working on at Industrial Recovery and Recycling in Greer.

The coroner’s office was called on June 10, almost a month after Gordon went missing.

Tissue had been found on a conveyor belt by the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office and tested before the coroner was called. It matched the DNA of Gordon’s parents.

The machine in question had been checked three times before the coroner’s investigators arrived at the plant June 14,

Clevenger said. It had been checked by Gordon’s father, Mike Gordon, who is a supervisor at the plant, a uniformed patrol supervisor with the Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff’s investigators and a cadaver K-9 and then again when material was found under the conveyor belt.

The coroner’s office also recovered material from under a support under the conveyor belt that moves the plastic material to another machine for further processing.

Gordon was working on top of the machine at the time he went missing. The room includes several machines and it is noisy.

A forensic anthropologist and a forensic pathologist hired by the coroner’s office examined the material and subsequently looked at the shredding machine.

The machine has been shut down and turned back on multiple times and 60,000 pounds of plastic material has been processed since Gordon went missing.

Missouri reports single case of rare infection caused by brain-eating amoeba

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services said this week it was notified of a Missouri resident with a laboratory-confirmed infection of Naegleria fowleri, a microscopic, single-celled, free-living amoeba that can cause a rare, life-threatening infection of the brain called primary amebic meningoencephalitis.

The Missouri patient is being treated for PAM in an intensive care unit of a hospital, the state health department said.

Health officials are still investigating the source of the patient’s infection, and said Friday that they are working closely with the Iowa Department of Public Health on the case.

The Iowa health department temporarily closed the Lake of Three Fires in Taylor County for swimming because of potential exposure. The lake is about 120 miles north of Kansas City.

No more steak, hamburgers? Common tick in Georgia causes allergic reaction to red meat

One day you are able to enjoy steak, hamburgers and sausage, and the next day those foods cause a severe allergic reaction.

People who suffer from a condition called alpha-gal syndrome break out in hives after eating red meat.

“I was fully covered in these hives head to toe. Literally from the top of my head to the bottom of my feet,” said Rob Attaway, who has alpha-gal syndrome.

Attaway first broke out in hives 12 years ago. The Roswell man said he had itching that lasted for hours and was unbearable.

“Literally you could sometimes not even hardly think because you’re itching and the only thing you want to do is try and get relief from the itching,” Attaway said.

He told Channel 2 Action News that he suffered for nine years before finally getting answers from an allergist.

“Found the problem: stop eating red meat. And I stopped eating red meat and within three days of that everything started to clear up,” Attaway said.

He tested positive for alpha-gal syndrome, a delayed allergic reaction to red meat. There is usually a three-to-eight-hour lag time. It’s caused by a bite from the Lone Star tick, the most common tick found in Georgia.

He said it’s spread to people by a tick that has fed on a mammal like a deer or a cow.

“It brings those chemicals, those antigens from that mammal into the human when it feeds on them, and then it causes an aberrant immune response,” Lee said.

He said there is no cure for alpha-gal. Therefore, preventing tick bites is key.

Officials close 2 Long Island beaches after unprecedented shark attack

Officials in Long Island closed two beaches to swimming on Sunday after a lifeguard participating in a training exercise was attacked by a shark.

Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone announced the temporary closure of Smith Point and Cupsogue beaches during a press conference in which he described the shark attack as unprecedented.

The attack comes after Nassau County authorities said a 57-year-old man swimming in the ocean at nearby Jones Beach sustained a laceration to his right foot that medics believe was the result of a "possible shark bite."

5th shark attack in 2 weeks off Long Island leaves man injured

The fifth shark attack in two weeks off Long Island was reported Wednesday evening.

A 49-year-old man from Arizona was bitten by a shark shortly after 6 p.m. at Seaview Beach, Suffolk police said.

The man "was standing in waist-deep water when a shark came up from behind and bit him on the left wrist and buttocks," police said in a statement.

The victim was able to walk out of the water and was transported via a Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The attack comes nearly 12 hours after a surfer was bitten by a shark around 7:45 a.m. on Wednesday near Smith Point Beach, according to Suffolk County officials.

Officials believe the attack was by a tiger shark, which left behind a 4-inch gash on the surfer's leg.

Another one of blind psychic Baba Vanga’s chilling predictions comes true

A blind psychic who allegedly predicted 9/11 claimed there would be water shortages in 2022.

Baba Vanga, dubbed “Nostradamus of the Balkans”, claimed that large cities would be struck by water shortages because of drought.

d9b85587afbc6c69e034a46be3c66864

She said that it would result in political consequences as alternative solutions were sourced, The Mirror reported.

It comes as Portugal and Italy have told their respective populations to restrict their water usage, with the latter expected to go through its worst drought since the 1950s.

The clairvoyant also claimed there would be more earthquakes and tsunamis - with “intense bouts of flood” in Australia and parts of Asia.

Heavy rainfall and flooding has wreaked havoc on Australia’s East Coast on-and-off for much of the year.

Other predictions for the year included famine in India due to temperature drops that will cause locust swarms, another pandemic discovered in Siberia, alien arrival via asteroid and a virtual reality takeover.

Volcano erupts near Iceland's capital in seismic hot spot

A volcano has erupted on a mountain near Iceland's capital Reykjavik after days of rising earthquake activity in the area, the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said on Wednesday.

Images and livestreams by local news outlets MBL and RUV showed lava and smoke spewing from a fissure in the ground on the side of the Fagradalsfjall mountain, which last year saw an eruption that lasted six months.

1357503.jpg

Tourists and residents should avoid the area due to poisonous gases, although there was no immediate risk of damage to critical infrastructure, the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management said in a statement.

A "code red" was declared to prohibit airplanes from flying over the site although helicopters were sent in to survey the situation, the IMO told Reuters.

If the outbreak was confirmed to be similar to the fissures seen last year, the aviation alert would likely be lowered to orange, signalling less danger, an agency spokesperson said.

"Currently, there have been no disruptions to flights to and from Iceland and international flight corridors remain open," the country's foreign ministry said in a statement.

The Reykjanes Peninsula is a volcanic and seismic hot spot, and the outbreak took place just 25 km (15 miles) from Reykjavik and 15 km from the nation's international airport.

In March last year, lava fountains erupted spectacularly in the area from a fissure 500 to 750 metres (1,640 to 2,460 feet) long, continuing until September and attracting thousands of Icelanders and tourists to the scene.

Unlike the eruption in 2010 of the ice-covered Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which halted some 100,000 flights and forced hundreds of Icelanders from their homes, this eruption is not expected to spew much ash or smoke into the atmosphere.

Fire at Berlin's Grunewald forest rages on as efforts to contain it continue

A large fire in one of Berlin's largest city forests, caused by several explosions at an ammunition dump, was still not under control by Thursday afternoon.

Around 100 firefighters were on site earlier to control the blaze in the Grunewald forest in the west of the city, German news agency dpa reported.

Berlin police said it was assisting their colleagues, setting up roadblocks to the forest and employing their own helicopters and water cannons in the fight against the fire amid concerns about its uncontrolled advance.

"The situation is dangerous," Thomas Kirstein from the Berlin fire department told reporters. He called on residents to stay away from the forest.

The fire first affected some 15,000 square metres, or 1,5 hectares of the forest, the city firefighting unit said on Thursday morning, while a one-kilometre perimeter has been set up as the situation remains high-risk.

The fire was spreading quickly, and massive explosions could be heard from the site where old ammunition from World War II, fireworks and explosive ordnance are stored, and controlled explosions are carried out.

The site has been in use since 1950, and the city has been looking for alternatives, but those were not available in the Berlin area and could not be approved, Berlin police said.

Due to flying debris and the threat of further explosions, the authorities said the responders were working on a "cautious containment" operation that could last until Thursday evening.

Blaze kills firefighter’s 10 relatives, 3 of them children

Fire tore quickly through a house in northeastern Pennsylvania early Friday morning, killing seven adults and three children and horrifying a volunteer firefighter who arrived to battle the blaze only to discover the victims were his own family, authorities said.

The children who died were ages 5, 6 and 7, Pennsylvania State Police said in a news release, while the seven adults ranged from their late teens to a 79-year-old man. Autopsies were planned for this weekend.

Harold Baker, a volunteer firefighter in the town of Nescopeck, said the 10 victims included his son, daughter, father-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, three grandchildren and two other relatives. He said his two children and the other young victims were visiting their aunt and uncle’s home for swimming and other summertime fun.

He said 13 dogs were also in the two-story home, but didn’t say if he knew whether any survived.

“All I wanted to do was go in there and get to these people, my family. That’s all that I was thinking about, getting in to them,” Baker said in a phone interview with The Associated Press.

Baker grabbed a hose and air pack, and started pouring water on the fire, desperate to make his way inside and calling out to his son. His chief realized whose house it was, and fellow firefighters escorted Baker back to the firehouse.

PSP say suspect admits to driving through crowd of people, killing mom with hammer

State troopers have a man in custody they say is a suspect in a mass casualty incident in Columbia County as well as an assault that left one woman dead in Luzerne County.

State troopers have charged Adrian Oswaldo Sura Reyes, a 24-year-old male from Nescopeck, with killing two people and sending 17 others to the hospital with injuries on August 13.

State Trooper Anthony Petroski said 18 people were hit by a vehicle while gathered at the Intoxicology Department bar in Berwick at a fundraiser for the families of the 10 people who died in a house fire earlier this month. According to Petroski, the crash left one person dead and sent 17 people to the hospital.

The affidavit identified 50-year-old Rebecca L. Reese as the person who died on the scene.

The criminal complaint and affidavit said Sura Reyes got into an argument with his mother in Nescopeck Borough. Following the argument, Sura Reyes left his residence and drove his vehicle to Berwick.

Police say Sura Reyes told them he drove past the Intoxicology Department bar towards Turkey Hill, turned right, and headed back to the bar to drive through the crowd of people. Sura Reyes went on to tell interviewers he was tired of fighting with his mother and wanted it to be done with.

According to the affidavit, Sura Reyes told officers, “I didn’t ram ’em, I just ran them over.”

Shortly after the crash, Pennsylvania State Police said they received a call for a male that was physically assaulting a female. Upon arriving on the scene, troopers found Rosa Reyes, the suspect’s mother, deceased on scene and Reyes in police custody.

Officials said Sura Reyes traveled back to his home in Nescopeck after driving through the crowd of people. When he arrived home, Sura Reyes saw his mother outside in the street.

Troopers said Sura Reyes told them he accelerated towards his mom and crashed into her with the front of his vehicle.

Police say Sura Reyes continued to tell investigators that he obtained a hammer from his vehicle and struck his mother in the head four to five times.
