Brain-Eating Amoeba Found In Brazosport Water Authority Supply

AUSTIN, TX — Brazosport Water Authority users late Friday were informed of the presence of the brain-eating amoeba naegleria fowleri in the water supply, prompting a "do not use" advisory across the water treatment plant's service area.

The advisory covers the Texas water authority's entire service area — including the cities of Lake Jackson; Freeport; Angleton; Brazoria; Richwood; Oyster Creek; Clute; and Rosenburg. The water plant also services the Dow Chemical Co. along with the Clemens and Wayne Scott prison units located in greater Houston and southwest of Houston, respectively, according to a Texas Commission on Environmental Quality advisory issued just before 10:45 p.m. on Friday.

Regulators saidt the water authority was first notified of the amoeba presence at 9:30 p.m. Brazosport Water Authority is a water treatment plant in Lake Jackson, Texas, within the greater Houston metropolitan area.

China declares plague emergency after boy, 3, is infected with Black Death

Some parts of China are under lockdown after a 3-year-old boy was infected with the bubonic plague.

Doctors confirmed the infection of the child from Menghai county, Yunnan, on Sunday (September 27).

The boy had been tested on Thursday but confirmation was delayed because he had already been given antibiotics, which made diagnosis difficult in initial samples.

The case was spotted as part of a national screening programme against the plague, also know as the " Black Death " infection, prompted by the discovery of three rats that had died of an unknown disease in Xiding, Menghai.

Local disease control authorities confirmed that a severe rat infestation has broken out in the region earlier this month.

The rise in murders in the US, explained

As if the Covid-19 pandemic wasn’t bad enough, American is also seeing a big surge in homicides this year.

A new report, by the Council on Criminal Justice, found that the homicide rate increased sharply this summer across 27 US cities: “Homicide rates between June and August of 2020 increased by 53% over the same period in 2019, and aggravated assaults went up by 14%.” Other data, from crime analyst Jeff Asher, found that murder is up 28 percent throughout the year so far, compared to the same period in 2019, in a sample of 59 US cities. A preliminary FBI report also found murders up 15 percent nationwide in the first half of 2020.

The increase in homicides is large and widespread enough to raise serious alarms for criminologists and other experts — and a trend that’s likely to come up in this week’s debate between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden.

So what’s going on?

1) The pandemic has really messed things up:

2) Depolicing led to more violence:

3) Lack of trust in police led to more violence:

4) More guns led to more gun violence:

5) Overwhelmed hospitals led to more deaths:

6) Idle hands led to more violence:

7) A bad economy led to more violence:

2020 features first global Halloween Blue Moon since WWII

The events of 2020 have been strange enough that some might quip they would only happen once in a blue moon. But this year will even have one of those: At the end of October, an actual, rare blue moon will occur – on Halloween.

This year, October has two full moons. On the 1st or 2nd of October (depending on which time zone you are in) gave us the Harvest Moon, the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox, when day and night are of equal length. This normally occurs in September but edged into October this year. Also known as the Full Corn Moon or Barley Moon in some parts of America, farmers have traditionally made the most of its light to gather in crops well into the night before winter sets in.

This year the Harvest Moon was also the Hunter's Moon, again named for rural practices, this time of hunting summer-fattened animals under the light of the moon, which is brighter and lasts longer at this time of year. However, 2020's Harvest Moon is a micro full moon, since it is smaller than usual.

The second full moon in any given month is known as the Blue Moon; there are seven every 19 years. The name is something of a placeholder, given in order to keep the year's other full moons in their rightful place. This is because the moon completes 12 full cycles of its phase in 354 days, eleven short of the full solar calendar year of 365 days.

This year's is particularly unusual as it is the first full moon to occur across all time zones since 1944, although there is a full moon on Halloween somewhere in the world every 19 years – meaning that the next one to occur will be in 2039, followed by 2058 and 2077.

Killer whales are now attacking people...

Mystery of killer whales ramming boats off coast of Spain in 'orchestrated' attacks

Baffled scientists are trying to work out why killer whales seem to have declared war on Spanish fishing boats.

Since July, experts have recorded over thirty attacks on small boats. Most have taken place off Spain’s north-west coast, but six vessels were rammed by the mammals in the Straits of Gibraltar and five in Portuguese waters.

Escaped cloned female mutant crayfish take over Belgian cemetery

Escaped self-cloning mutant crayfish created in experimental breeding programmes have invaded a Belgian cemetery.

Hundreds of the duplicating crustaceans, which can dig down to up to a metre and are always female, pose a deadly threat to local biodiversity after colonising a historic Antwerp graveyard.

"It's impossible to round up all of them. It's like trying to empty the ocean with a thimble," said Kevin Scheers, of the Flemish Institute for Nature and Woodland Research.

WTF is wrong with people?

Las Vegas Passenger Hanging Out of Van Pushes Over and Kills Bicyclist Before Falling Out of Car and Dying

Two people were killed in Las Vegas, Nevada, over the weekend in a collision involving a minivan and bicyclist that police are describing as a "senseless act."

Around 7 a.m. on Sunday, several cars were driving recklessly along Las Vegas' Hollywood Blvd toward Sahara Blvd, witnesses told police, according to KSNV News 3. The witnesses said that a passenger in a minivan was hanging halfway out of the car, attempting to strike people on the sidewalk.

The passenger missed two pedestrians, but then struck a middle-aged woman riding in the bicycle lane further down the road, according to KSNV.

"While driving down Hollywood Boulevard, they pulled along-side a female bicyclist and the passenger leaned out of the vehicle window and pushed her to the ground," a press release from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department obtained by PEOPLE stated. "At the same time, the passenger fell out of the moving vehicle and struck a light pole."

Both were declared dead on the scene.

On Monday, police identified the driver as Rodrigo Cruz, 22, who "fled the scene before officers arrived and was later apprehended."

Beach ball-sized jellyfish capable of damaging boats spotted in South Carolina

Wildlife officials in South Carolina are asking boaters to keep their eyes peeled for an invasive species of jellyfish that can grow to beach ball size and are big enough to damage boats and fishing equipment.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources says that it got a report last week of a huge jellyfish in Murrells Inlet, about 25 miles south of Myrtle Beach.

Chris Collins told CNN that he and his wife Kari were enjoying an evening cruise in their boat on October 28 when they saw the jellyfish in a creek that is a good distance away from the ocean.

"When we first saw it, I thought it was maybe a sea turtle or a large sting ray, so we turned around to get a better look," Collins said. "Once we saw it was a jellyfish that we were not familiar with, we wanted to get some pictures to share to see if anyone could help identify it."

The couple had never seen a jellyfish like that, so they posted the pictures on Facebook and then sent them to the SCDNR for identification.

Staff members identified it as an Australian spotted jellyfish, spokeswoman Erin Weeks told CNN.

She said they can be a danger to fishing gear and boats because of their size and the volume of jellyfish that occur in blooms. They can get stuck in boats' water intake lines and put a strain on fishing nets when they get scooped up.
