Toilet rats! Vermin are all over Britain – and they’re climbing up our waste pipes

The rat population exploded in 2020, they can each tread water for three days and they are biding their time before entering our bathrooms

5316.jpg?width=620&quality=85&auto=forma

Name: Toilet rats.

Age: Nothing new, but an upward trend.

Appearance: Like a regular rat, but this time in your toilet.

I’ll be honest: I do not like the sound of this one bit. You are not alone.

How did the rat get in the toilet in the first place? It came up the waste pipe.

You mean they’re coming from the toilet? That’s correct.

Why is this happening? It started during the first lockdown in 2020, when entire business districts were depopulated. With less rubbish lying around to eat, rats invaded abandoned offices in search of food.

By swimming up the loo pipes? If toilets aren’t being used the water in the U-bend can evaporate, making them even easier for rats to access.

So as long as someone flushes the loo regularly, everything’s fine? Not really. Rats are excellent swimmers – they can hold their breath for three minutes and tread water for three days. If they want to get in your toilet, they will.

Child dies after contracting brain-eating amoeba at a Texas splash pad

A child in North Texas died earlier this month after contracting a rare brain-eating amoeba at a city splash pad, officials announced on Monday.

The child was hospitalized September 5 with primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, a rare and often fatal infection caused by an amoeba called Naegleria fowleri, according to a joint news release from the Tarrant County Public Health and the City of Arlington. The child died September 11. To protect the child’s identity, no other details about them were released, according to the news release.

Naegleria fowleri is commonly found in soil and in fresh warm water such as lakes, rivers and hot springs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It can also be found in poorly maintained or unchlorinated pools.

EPA to regulate certain types of 'forever chemicals' in drinking water in 2023

The EPA on Monday released its strategy for addressing a type of cancer-linked chemicals called PFAS, including its plans to finish a rule to regulate certain types of PFAS in drinking water in 2023.

PFAS stands for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, and these substances are a group of man-made chemicals that have been linked to health problems such as kidney and testicular cancer.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, exposure rates can be difficult to assess, but one 2015 study found PFAS to be in the blood of 97 percent of Americans.

The EPA’s overall strategy is focused on researching PFAS, restricting their release into the air, land and water and broadening cleanup efforts.

The agency’s drinking water limit pertains to certain types of PFAS called PFOA and PFOS, saying it hopes to propose an enforceable drinking water limit for them in fall 2022 and finalize it in fall 2023.

Monkey kills man with a BRICK: Rampaging primate hurls stone from upper floor of a house in India fatally striking 30-year-old on the head

A man has been killed in India after a monkey threw a brick at him from the second floor of a building.

Local police confirmed that 30-year-old Mohammad Kurbaan was killed after being hit in the head with the falling brick in Central Delhi’s Nabi Karim area.

Kurbaan, who sold bags from a shop in the area, collapsed after being hit with the brick and was taken to hospital, where doctors pronounced his dead.

While investigating, police discovered that the owner of the building the bricks were thrown from had left two bricks above a water tank to prevent monkeys from opening it.

Police said that a group of monkeys had managed to remove both of the bricks, throwing one at Kurbaan and hurling another onto a nearby terrace.

The incident, earlier this month, comes after the wife of a leader of a major political party in India has fallen to her death while trying to escape a monkey attack.

Husband of missing Northfield woman admits to shooting, dismembering wife, according to affidavit

The husband of a Northfield woman has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge on Wednesday. Police said he admitted to shooting and dismembering his wife.

Emily Ferlazzo, 22, was reported missing by her family on Monday. Her husband, Joseph Ferlazzo, 41, was arrested Monday in Vermont, where the couple was vacationing.

An affidavit said Joseph Ferlazzo told investigators that they had an argument, which included Emily Ferlazzo kicking and hitting him. It said he admitted to using a handgun to shoot her, then put a garbage bag over her head and put her body in the bathroom of their camper.

That paperwork said that after several hours, Joseph Ferlazzo allegedly used a handsaw to cut apart his wife’s body.

Investigators said they found human remains, a gun and a handsaw in the van the couple had been vacationing in.

Rare ‘flesh-eating’ STD on the rise in UK, doctor warns

A rare “flesh-eating” sexually transmitted disease is making waves online after a doctor in the United Kingdom warned that it was starting to appear more often in that country.

Granuloma inguinale, also known as donovanosis, is a genital ulcerative disease caused by the bacterium Klebsiella granulomatis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC says donovanosis causes painless “beefy red” lesions on the genitals that can bleed. These spreading, bleeding lesions led many to call the STD “flesh-eating,” although it does not actually eat the flesh as it spreads.

The rare disease is mostly found in India, South Africa and South America, but received much attention online after Dr. Karan Raj posted about it on his popular TikTok account. Raj called donovanosis “terrifying” and noted cases are rising in the UK.

'Ghost Ships' From WWII Brought Up From Sea Bed Following Volcanic Activity

Activity from an underwater volcano has brought two dozen 'ghost ships' to the surface of the Pacific Ocean, decades after being sunk during WWII.

The ships were involved in the bloody Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945, when they were sunk by US forces.

However, they came ashore on the western side of Iwo Jima - an island located about 760 miles away from Tokyo, Japan - after seismic activity from underwater volcano Fukutoku-Okanoba brought them up from the sea bed.

Aerial images released by Japanese news channel All Nippon News show the resurfaced remains of the 24 ships, which are now lying on a bed of volcanic ash due to the seismic tremors.

Setsuya Nakada of the Volcano Research Promotion Centre told All Nippon News: "The discoloured sea area has spread to surrounding areas, which indicates that the volcanic activity has not diminished yet.

"There is a possibility of a big eruption on Iwo Jima."

German on trial for castrating men on his kitchen table

A German electrician went on trial Thursday accused of murder in the death of one man, and mutilating several others by performing illegal operations on their genitals.

The 66-year-old told a regional court in Munich that he performed the procedures at the men’s request.

The defendant, whose name wasn’t released for privacy reasons, claimed he initially offered sexual services on sado-masochistic websites in order to earn money to pay off debts.

Later, the man allegedly expanded his repertoire by performing operations on his kitchen table in the town of Markt Schwaben, telling his victims that he was a trained medical professional, German news agency dpa reported.

The defendant told the court that he castrated, or partially amputated the genitals of, eight men between July 2018 and March 2020.

Catskill man burst into flames after police tasered him

A 29-year-old Catskill man is in a Syracuse burn unit after he burst into flames when Catskill police officers used a Taser to subdue him after he had doused himself with hand sanitizer, police confirmed on Friday.

Jason Jones, a celebrated athlete at Catskill High School more than a decade ago, is in an intensive care unit at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. His condition is grave, according to people briefed on the matter.

The incident unfolded last weekend when Jones, who appeared intoxicated, walked into the village police department and got into a confrontation with officers. Chief Dave Darling, a former State Police senior investigator, confirmed that officers deployed a Taser to subdue Jones, who was familiar to them from past encounters.

"I think they were afraid he was going to hurt himself, and that’s what started it," Darling said. "There are still details that we’re trying to develop."

The chief described the incident as "horrible" and said it is under investigation by the Greene County district attorney's office. It's unclear when Jones poured hand sanitizer on himself, and if police saw him do it. Darling did not respond to follow-up questions.

A law enforcement source briefed on the investigation said that Jones had stripped off some his clothing in the police station and doused himself with hand sanitizer in front of officers before they tasered him. The chief declined to comment on that information.

Members of the Catskill village board of trustees also did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Friday afternoon.

Kevin A. Luibrand, an attorney for Jones' family, declined to discuss details of the matter. "We've requested preservation of all recordings and written materials and have no further comment," he said.

Darling said his officers are not equipped with body cameras, but there are video cameras in the police station.

In a letter to Darling dated Thursday, Luibrand requested that the department preserve all evidence in the case, including audio and video recordings from street cameras and other devices, as well as any computer data from any Tasers that were used during the encounter.

Egypt: Scorpions kill three and injure hundreds in Aswan

Scorpions in Egypt have stung three people to death in the southern city of Aswan after heavy storms brought them into the streets and homes.

Some 450 more people were injured by scorpion stings, a health ministry official said.

The hail and thunder storm in the area near the River Nile on Friday was particularly violent.

Scorpions are regularly washed into the streets by heavy rain, while snakes have also been disturbed.

Extra doses of anti-venom have been provided to medical centres in villages near mountains and deserts, a health official told Al-Ahram news agency.

Doctors have been pulled away from giving vaccinations to treat scorpion stings, the official added.
