Teacher goes on trial in Berlin for 'sado-cannibalism'

A 41-year-old teacher goes on trial in Germany on Tuesday accused of sado-cannibalism for sexual gratification.

The teacher identified in the German media as Stefan R under the nation’s strict privacy laws, is alleged to have killed a 43-year-old technician in his apartment shortly after meeting him on a dating website.

He then allegedly cut up the victim, identified as Stefan T, and dumped the body parts at various locations across Berlin.

The prosecution plans to argue there was a "sadistic-cannibalistic sexual motivation for the crime" after the suspect allegedly ate parts of the corpse.

Haiti struck by deadly 7.2-magnitude earthquake

A powerful earthquake has struck the Caribbean nation of Haiti, killing at least 29 people.

The 7.2-magnitude quake hit the west of the country on Saturday morning, toppling and damaging buildings including churches and hotels.

The prime minister said there was "extensive damage" in parts of the country, and he was declaring a month-long state of emergency.

Haiti is still recovering from a devastating 2010 earthquake.

The epicentre of Saturday's quake was about 12km (7.5 miles) from the town of Saint-Louis du Sud, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The tremor was felt in the densely-populated capital of Port-au-Prince, some 125km away, and in neighbouring countries.

"Lots of homes are destroyed, people are dead and some are at the hospital," Christella Saint Hilaire, who lives near the epicentre, told AFP news agency.

1st Live Asian Giant 'Murder Hornet' Of 2021 Spotted In Washington State

The first live Asian giant "murder hornet" of 2021 has been spotted in Washington state — and it was caught in the act of living up to its name, attacking a wasp nest.

Entomologists on Thursday confirmed the report of Vespa mandarinia — the world's largest hornet and a worrisome invasive species that originates from East Asia and Japan — by a person in a rural area east of the town of Blaine, south of Vancouver, British Columbia, near the Canadian border.

May want to keep it in your pants if you're in Alberta:

'Horrifying' number of syphilis infections in Alberta reaching pre-antibiotic levels

Despite advances in health care, the number of syphilis infections is skyrocketing across Alberta, reaching their highest levels in about 70 years.

Cases of the disease in Alberta have exploded since 2000, when only 17 were reported. By 2020, there were 2,509 cases in the province.

"The highest rates we've seen since the 1940s, which is, of course, the pre-antibiotic era," said Dr. Ameeta Singh, an infectious disease specialist who works at Edmonton's Royal Alexandra Hospital.

"Despite all of our advances, we are seeing a horrifying rate of syphilis cases."

Climber Still Recovering Months After “Anal Impalement” Accident at Rock Gym. Let’s All Fatten His GoFundMe, Shall We?

On June 17th, Brandon Frohbieter climbed about 12 feet up an autobelay route when he decided it looked fun and he wanted to try it. He wasn’t clipped in yet. He jumped down and was impaled by a pvc pipe. The pvc pipe was there to hold up plastic ‘fencing,’ since adjacent to the route he was on routesetting was underway.

Brandon explains: “I was at the gym and rocking around on an autobelay route. I went up a little bit off the ground and it was pretty sweet so I was gonna hop down and actually go up the route. I looked down my right shoulder, and I just saw the ground, so I just kind of dropped from the wall. I was probably about 12 feet off the ground and I just landed down straight on that pipe. I started screaming at the top of my lungs. I thought up until the moment it happened I was just expecting to hit the ground…And I had no idea what happened. I just knew that I was in excruciating pain. And something terrible had happened. And I couldn’t really feel my bottom half and I knew blood was pooling around.”

Frohbieter, of Gig Harbor, Washington, was evacuated to a nearby ER, where imaging revealed that his extensive injuries included a fractured sacrum, coccyx, tibial plateau, and burst T7 vertebrae.

Super Death Speed Roller Coaster Is Shut Down for Snapping Backs and Bones In Japan

Billed as the fastest-accelerating roller coaster in the world, an amusement ride in Japan at Fuji-Q Highland Park has caused at least six riders to suffer bone fractures after reaching “super death speed.”

A release posted by the operators of Fuji-Q Highland’s Do-Dodonpa roller coaster say that as a result of the injuries, they’ve “suspended for the time being” operations of the wild ride. They say the shutdown will last indefinitely from August 12, 2021 “due to a safety overhaul.”

At our Attraction ‘Do-Dodonpa-Fastest Roller Coaster’, a total of four injuries have been reported by passengers who boarded between December 2020 and August 2021,” reads the release. “Currently, the causal relationship between injuries and amusement machines has not yet been confirmed. We would like to express our deepest sympathies to the injured customers and cause a great deal of inconvenience to them, but we will endeavor to investigate the cause under the guidance of the government.”

VICE says that a spokesperson for the park told them that it was in fact six riders who suffered back and neck fractures.

In operation since 2001, the lunatic ride goes from 0 to 112 mph (180 kph) in just 1.56 seconds, and that means the coaster is “the fastest-accelerating roller coaster in the world.” According to the officials at the park, this marks the first time riders suffered broken bones since Do-Dodonpa entered service 20 years ago.

Swarm of 140 earthquakes has geologists closely eyeing volcano in Hawaii national park

A swarm of more than 140 earthquakes shook the ground beneath a Hawaii national park.

Now geologists are keeping a close eye on a nearby volcano.

U.S. Geological Survey geologists changed the alert level for the Kīlauea volcano from an ”advisory” to a ”watch” Tuesday. That means the volcano is showing “heightened or escalating unrest,” and there’s potential for an eruption.

multimediaFile-3283.jpg

But it’s not currently erupting, geologists said.

The orange watch alert level is the second-highest level, with the highest being a red warning, which means an eruption is underway or imminent.

Meet the spotted lanternfly, the bug health officials are begging you to kill on sight

Whether you choose to kill insects or not, there is one bug across the northeastern United States health officials want you to take care of immediately: the spotted lanternfly.

ffba07ad-fc02-4319-8783-ddd539334d26-AP_

Though it may seem like a colorful moth worthy of an Instagram post, it's actually an invasive species that can wreak havoc on trees, plants and other landscapes, resulting in millions of dollars in damages.

The spotted lanternfly originates from China, and George Hamilton, department chair of entomology at Rutgers University, believes they landed in the U.S. via a crate coming from the Asian country. The invasive insects – which actually don't fly but rather are leafhoppers – were first spotted in Pennsylvania less than 10 years ago. Now, they can be seen throughout the northeast and mid-Atlantic, from the five boroughs in New York City to parts of Indiana.

They may have spread so easily because they are hard to notice. From hiding on cars and packages, they've become such a problem that New Jersey and nearby areas have issued quarantine orders, asking people to inspect their vehicles before traveling. In Pennsylvania, there are 34 counties currently under quarantine.

"They're very good hitchhikers," Hamilton told USA TODAY. "Most people don't even know they've got them until the adult form comes out."

The good news about the insects is that they can't harm humans or pets. However, they cause massive damage to plants and are known to feed on over 70 different types of trees and plants.

But the damage doesn't end there. As Amy Korman, a horticulture educator for Penn State Extension, says, "What goes in must come out."

The spotted lanternflies secrete a sticky material known as honeydew, which is very high in sugar. It is a substrate for mold, and when it gets on plants, it prevents them from photosynthesizing which then leads to the plants dying. The mold these lanternflies leave can end up in backyards and decks and can attract numerous other bugs.

"It seems like it's such a fragile insect. And yet it's been so successful in taking over our landscapes," Korman said. "It's sort of like the Pandora's box of problems."

Earth on Alert for G2 Geomagnetic Storm

The National Weather Service’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) is warning that a G2 class Geomagnetic Storm could impact Earth on Thursday, perhaps impacting electrical grids and transformers, interfering with satellites, disrupting radio communications, and sending the Northern Lights much more south than usual. In their latest bulletin, the SWPC believes there’s a chance of G1 Geomagnetic Storm Conditions on Earth tomorrow, growing to a G2 Geomagnetic Storm event for Thursday.

Several explosive events have occured on the Sun in recent days, with each sending different kinds of blasts towards Earth. In the last 48 hours, the aurora has been spotted in southern Alaska and across New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

According to the SWPC, minor enhancement in the solar wind is likely tonight as the August 26 coronal mass ejection (CME) passes near Earth.  Solar wind parameters are expected to once again become enhanced on September 1-2  Sep due to the anticipated arrival of the August 28 CME combined with an additional CME from a filament that disappeared from near the center meridian on August 28.

Geomagnetic storms are rated on a 1-5 scale, with 1 being the weakest and 5 having the most potential for damage.

Kansas student's state fair entry triggers a federal spotted lanternfly investigation

While the invasive spotted lanternfly has been wreaking havoc on the East Coast, officials in Kansas were shocked to find one pinned on a student display at the state fair.

The spotted lanternfly is an invasive insect that prevents plants from photosynthesizing, causing them to die, prompting health officials to suggest killing it on site. Kansas State Fair officials judging 4-H entomology entries last week discovered one display included an invasive moth.

That triggered a federal investigation.

“We had one entomology issue,” Fair Board member Gregg Hadley, Director for Extension at K-State Research and Extension, advised the rest of the board Friday morning. “It was a dead one, but it was in a critter box.”

The student from Thomas County who included the insect in a 4-H insect display box had properly identified it as a spotted lanternfly.

The student, however, Hadley said, was unaware the bug was an invasive species that has prompted quarantines in at least 45 counties in Pennsylvania and New Jersey to try to stop its spread.

One of the fair’s entomology judges was familiar with the insect — and the requirement of reporting it to the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.

That agency will conduct an investigation, trying to trace back how the insect landed in northwestern Kansas, some 1,100 miles from the quarantined areas.

Disturbing discovery in an Oklahoma grocery store freezer left one woman disgusted and nearly in tears

A man allegedly defecated in a grocery store freezer Sunday night, and a woman who was shopping accidentally put her hand in it while reaching for groceries that were covering it.

“I pick up a bag of pizza rolls and there’s literally s–t,” Shirley Wright-Johnson said in a video of the incident. “Human s–t. Excuse my language.”

A Sunday trip to the store for her and her kids turned out to be more than what the Moore mom bargained for.

“I was upset, I was disgusted, I feel like I was violated,” she said in an interview with KFOR.

‘It’s not only a scam, but it’s also a robbery,’ Oklahoma woman scammed out of $15,000 after Walmart trip

Wright-Johnson said she is still trying to comprehend what happened while picking up a bag of pizza rolls in the freezer section.

“I grabbed the bag, I felt something smushy on the bag, so I turned it over and there it was,” she said.

Moore police said it was human feces. Wright-Johnson said there was another bag of pizza rolls that had been placed on top of it covering it up.

“I was so disgusted I was almost in tears,” she said.

Lt. Kyle Johnson with the Moore Police Department said they want to talk to the man seen in the picture below.

“That individual was then observed, went to the cooler section where he proceeded to defecate inside one of the coolers before leaving the business,” Johnson said.

Locals on La Palma island (Canary Islands) report that part of the land associated with the volcano is tearing away.

If a large section of the volcano tears, this could cause an Atlantic wide tsunami. This is not a guarantee that this will happen, merely a statement of the worst case scenario at play if the situation deteriorates further. Geologists on site state this currently highly unlikely to occur, however are frequently monitoring ground movements and will send out alerts if neccessary.

Probably more fitting in the Wheel of Horrors thread.

Not surprisingly posts on Facebook are fearmongering:

Can the volcano in La Palma produce a tsunami at the east coast of United States?

Could a tsunami be created from the landslide collapse that would hit the east coast of the United States?

No, is the simple answer, based on most research. The answer was the same in 2017 and it seems that it is necessary to confirm it once again in 2021.

Based on the current geometry of the island, the geological structure, the inclination of the layers, etc., Cumbre Vieja would be stable enough according to the geo-mechanical models and stability analysis undertaken. For it to happen otherwise, a very high magnitude earthquake would have to occur simultaneously along with an eruption with a high explosive index. Or, the current volcano would have to reach, in its natural growth, more than a thousand metres above its current maximum elevation," something that was explained in 2017.

Beware of carnivorous hammerhead worms wreaking havoc on Southern U.S. lawns

It’s slimy, can grow to be over a foot long and has a head that resembles a very unique shark. Meet the hammerhead worm, making its way to lawns across Alabama.

If you see one of these invasive worms – also called bipalium – don’t pick it up. Experts say the worm emits a toxin that can irritate your skin.

“You certainly don’t want to pick them up with your bare hands, because they can secrete that toxin and as far as we know, we don’t have a ton of research on this, but it can cause your skin to be irritated,” said Katelyn Kesheimer, an entomologist with Auburn University and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.
