Boaters who went missing on a fishing trip were rescued by the US Coast Guard as they fended off shark attacks

A fishing trip turned into a rescue mission over the weekend when three people became stranded in the Gulf of Mexico for more than a day after their boat sank, with two of them fighting off shark attacks before help arrived, officials said.

Rescuers spotted the three people in the water Sunday about 25 miles off the coast of Empire, Louisiana, after they were reported missing by a concerned family member who said they had not returned from their fishing trip Saturday, the U.S. Coast Guard 8th District Heartland said in a news release.

When rescue crews located the trio, they found two of them fending off sharks in the water. A boat crew pulled them out and they were taken to a hospital via helicopter. The third boater was hoisted from the water. All three are in stable condition, with two suffering hand injuries and one showing signs of hypothermia when rescued, the Coast Guard said.

“If the family member had not notified the Coast Guard, and if these three boaters were not wearing life jackets, this could’ve been a completely different outcome,” Lt. Cmdr. Kevin Keefe, a Sector New Orleans Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator, said in the release.

Is Hawaii’s Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano, at risk of erupting?

The past week saw a series of earthquakes rattle beneath Hawaii’s Mauna Loa, the world’s largest active volcano, leaving geologists to issue a warning that it was in a “state of heightened unrest”.

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake was the strongest ripple to tear across the underbelly of the formation, which is situated on the centre of the state’s big island of Hawaii.

News of the increased seismic activity last week prompted the National Park Service to close access to the summit to climbers and tourists, a move that the agency said was “a precautionary measure”.

Though the volcano hasn’t erupted since 1984, the past few weeks of increased underground quakes has given rise to local concerns that the Mauna Loa might be due for a spill over.

Here, we breakdown everything we know about the possibility of such an outcome and why Mauna Loa is on scientists and geologists’ radar in recent weeks.

The sky-scraping formation has been relatively quiet over the past few decades, as scientists celebrated the 30th anniversary of its last eruption on 25 March 2014. Though the last one occurred in 1984, eruptions at Mauna Loa have been occurring for generations; since 1832, there’s been 39 eruptions documented while the USGS estimates that – on average – one has occured every six years over the past 3000 years.

Warnings began to be issued part way through September when geologists began to record an uptick in the number of earthquakes trembling below its surface. For a typical day in mid-September, the site was experiencing approximately 20 quakes a day, but that number shifted up to 40 by the beginning of October.

In response to this shift in seismic activity, the US Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory updated its advisory level from green to yellow out of precaution for the volcano’s “heightened unrest”.

(In this four-tier advisory system, green is the lowest and equates to normal activity; yellow intimates that the “volcano is exhibiting signs of elevated unrest above known background activity”; orange is watch and means that there is “escalating unrest with increased potential of eruption”; and red means an eruption is “imminent, underway, or suspected”.)

Seems like the fourth tier should be brown.

Georgia college student killed by propeller of plane he rented for date

A Georgia college student was killed instantly when he was struck by the propeller of an airplane he rented for a dinner date, according to the Bulloch County Coroner’s Office.

The freak accident occurred Sunday night, Oct. 16, at the Statesboro Bulloch County Airport in Statesboro, Coroner Jake Futch confirmed to McClatchy News.

Officials identified the victim as Sani Aliyu, 21, of Atlanta. Georgia Southern University administrators confirmed he was a sophomore management major.

Futch said Aliyu had rented a Cessna plane to fly himself and a young woman to Savannah for dinner Sunday night. Upon returning to Statesboro, the young woman got out and walked toward the back of the aircraft.

“(Aliyu) got out and walked toward the front,” Futch said. “And when he did, the propeller hit him in the head, killing him instantly.”

Hawaii’s Big Island warned to be ready as huge volcano rumbles

Hawaii officials are warning residents of the Big Island that the world’s largest active volcano, Mauna Loa, is sending signals that it may erupt.

Scientists say an eruption isn’t imminent, but they are on alert because of a recent spike in earthquakes at the volcano’s summit. Experts say it would take just a few hours for lava to reach homes closest to vents on the volcano, which last erupted in 1984.

Hawaii’s civil defense agency is holding meetings across the island to educate residents about how to prepare for a possible emergency. They recommend having a ″go″ bag with food, identifying a place to stay once they leave home and making a plan for reuniting with family members.

“Not to panic everybody, but they have to be aware of that you live on the slopes of Mauna Loa. There’s a potential for some kind of lava disaster,” said Talmadge Magno, the administrator for Hawaii County Civil Defense.

Wisconsin hospice nurse charged with felony abuse after amputating a patients foot without a doctor's order, police say

A former Wisconsin nurse is facing felony charges after she amputated a dying patient's foot without orders from a doctor, police said.

Mary K. Brown, 38, a former hospice nurse who was responsible for taking care of the victim at Spring Valley Health and Rehab Center in Spring Valley, Wisconsin, was charged with physical abuse of an elder person, intentionally causing great bodily harm, and mayhem, according to a criminal complaint reviewed by local news outlet WQOW.

The dying patient, who was under Brown's care, had severe frostbite on both of his feet and was admitted to the nursing home in March 2022, and was believed to be close to death toward the end of May, according to the outlet.

According to WQOW, Brown amputated the dying patient's right foot, which was only being held on by some skin and a couple of tendons, on May 27, despite not having permission from the doctor or being asked by the patient.

Brown admitted to police officials that she amputated the patient's foot to make him more comfortable, according to WQOW.

A nurse who witnessed the amputation told police officials that the patient gripped her hand tight and moaned during the procedure, according to the local news outlet.

Another nurse who spoke with the patient after the procedure said he told her that it hurt and he felt everything during the operation, according to WQOW.

Little fire ants invade Hawaii, 'rain down on people and sting them'

Officials on Kauai in Hawaii are imploring the public to check their properties as one of the world’s top invasive species has been detected in the island’s biggest infestation to date.

Following the discovery of millions of little fire ants at Wailua River State Park, located in eastern Kauai about 6 miles north of Lihue, the Kauai Invasive Species Committee has led a big media push, with radio spots alerting residents of free at-home test kits. The colony marks Kauai’s largest infestation since the invasive species was first detected on the island in 1999.

Officials had not come across another infestation on Kauai until about two years ago in Moloaa.

This latest one — estimated at anywhere between 13 and 35 acres — originated on a private property and has now spilled over a cliffside into a lush valley, dangerously close to the Wailua River, where little fire ants "can easily float down and create multiple colonies," general outreach specialist Haylin Chock, of the Kauai Invasive Species Committee, told SFGATE. "That’s really the concerning part."

Aside from presenting health risks for pets and challenges to the state’s vital agriculture industry, little fire ants pose a serious threat to Hawaii residents and tourists alike. "They’re changing the way of life for our residents here in Hawaii," Forester said. "You used to be able to go out hiking and go to the beach. They can rain down on people and sting them.

Large Earthquake Strikes Near Tonga

A shallow, strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 struck in the sea about 130 miles off the coast of Tonga on Friday, setting off tsunami warnings across the Pacific Island region.

The tremor, first reported by the United States Geological Survey, began at 11:48 p.m. local time, at a depth of 15 miles. Tsunami advisories were issued for Tonga, Niue and American Samoa.

Hazardous waves from the earthquake were possible within 300 kilometers, or 186 miles, of the epicenter along the coasts of Niue and Tonga, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. American Samoa, which is farther north, could also be affected.

In Tonga — which experienced a devastating volcanic eruption that led to a tsunami on Jan. 15 — officials issued an urgent national tsunami warning, advising people to get to the third floor of buildings if they were unable to flee to higher ground. Residents posted photographs online of evacuation centers filling up.

After a few hours, the authorities lifted the tsunami warning, but warned that ocean currents around coastal areas “may be strong and erratic and special caution should be exercised.”

Two planes collide in fiery mid-air crash during Dallas air show

As many as six people may have been on two World War II-era planes that collided while flying in a Dallas air show on Saturday, according to an organizer.

The crash occurred around 1:20 p.m., when the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and a Bell P-63 Kingcobra collided at the Wings Over Dallas Airshow at Dallas Executive Airport, according to information provided by the Federal Aviation Administration.

"At this time, it is unknown how many people were on both aircraft," the FAA said in a statement.

There were no reports of injuries, but Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said the collision's debris field includes parts of Executive Airport grounds, Highway 67, and a nearby strip mall.

Henry “Hank” Coates, CEO of Commemorative Air Force, the organization behind the show, said a total of six people could have been on the two aircraft.

Earthquake Shakes Indonesia’s Java Island; Dozens Dead

A strong, shallow earthquake toppled buildings and collapsed walls on Indonesia’s densely populated main island of Java on Monday, killing at least 56 and injuring hundreds as people rushed into the streets, some covered in blood and white debris.

Emergency workers treated the injured on stretchers and blankets outside main hospitals, on terraces and in parking lots. Many included children, some of whom were given oxygen masks, IV lines and were being resuscitated.

“I fainted. It was very strong,” said Hasan, a construction worker who is being treated at the Cianjur Regional Hospital. “I saw my friends running to escape from the building. But I was too late to get out and was hit by the wall.”

Residents, some crying with children in their arms, fled damaged homes after the magnitude 5.6 quake shook the Cianjur region in West Java province in late afternoon, at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). It also caused panic in the greater Jakarta area, where high-rises swayed and some were evacuated.

Rescue teams and civilians in Cianjur were looking for others who may have been buried in the debris of collapsed brick houses. The quake was powerful enough to bring down walls, chunks of concrete and roof tiles, some of which landed inside bedrooms.

The Landlord & the Tenant

A young mother rents a house near Milwaukee. The previous tenant tells her, “Baby, they shouldn’t have let you move in.”

1.

In West Allis, a Milwaukee suburb once dominated by a factory that long ago manufactured steam engines, ore crushers and kilns, a man living on West Hicks Street opens his back door to let the dog out and sees smoke.

It’s coming from the house next door, from the roof. He calls 911. “Seven, seven, five, zero,” he says. “The house is on fire.” He doesn’t see flames. But the smoke keeps pouring. Sunset is more than two hours away, but the smoke gets so thick it darkens the sky. It’s cold and wet. In the mud, in the side yard of the smoking house, there are two toy trucks and a stuffed animal.

Engine 1 and Engine 2 arrive within seconds of each other, then Engine 3.

2.

Todd Brunner is only 20 when, in the summer of 1977, he buys an old duplex on Milwaukee’s south side. He purchases the house with Glen Guldan, a friend from high school. A bank gives them a $24,000 loan.

For Brunner and Guldan, the house is an investment. The two young landlords are from the suburb of New Berlin, where the residents, to quote one magazine, are “remnants of Milwaukee’s white flight in the 1960s and ’70s or descendants of local farming families.”

I read this earlier today and I haven't been able to get it out of my mind all day. It's hard to not feel a huge emotional thanks for never having to endure the horror this woman went through. But, this is not an acceptance of what happened.

This country is so broken. Corruption & indifference is rampant everywhere...

Sad. Really, really sad.

World's largest active volcano, Mauna Loa, erupts in Hawaii; moves to northeast rift zone

Mauna Loa, the largest active volcano in the world, has begun to erupt in Hawaii, the U.S. Geological Survey and other authorities said.

The eruption started late Sunday at about 11:30 p.m. HST in Moku‘āweoweo, the summit caldera of Mauna Loa in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, according to a USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory alert. The observatory said it was working closely with emergency management partners.

The eruption had remained confined to the summit caldera early Monday, but USGS Volcanoes and the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency later reported some overflowing on the southwest portion. Shortly before 12:20 p.m. EST (7:20 a.m. HST) USGS Volcanoes announced the volcano's eruption had moved to the northeast rift zone, with lava flows heading downslope to the north.

An eruption from the northeast means lava could flow towards Hilo, Hawaii, or other locations in East Hawaii, but it could take the lava weeks or even months to reach people. Lava emerging from a southwest rift zone could reach communities in hours or days.
