China
Brain-altering poison sparks vicious and unprovoked seal attacks on humans A rash of attacks by seals on humans in South Africa has been blamed on brain damage caused by diseased fish. A “red tide” of toxic algae, boosted by climate change, has found its way into South Africa’s seal population through the fish they eat. That’s caused a mass die-off of seals – but those that remain have become unusually aggressive. Loulou Taylor, who played Cassia in the NOW TV sci-fi series Raised By Wolves, is just one victim of the bizarre seal attacks. After being bitten by a seal at Clifton beach near Cape Town, she wrote on Instagram: “Be careful swimming at Clifton! I was attacked by a seal in the water.” The South African-born actress added she was “bitten 6 times, requiring an ER visit and strong antibiotics,” pointing out that while seals may look like friendly creatures “they have big teeth”. Similar unprovoked attacks have been reported by another woman who was chased and pounced on by a seal in the same area and a fisherman who suffered a number of bits from a seal that he said “had attempted to drag him into deeper water”. China
Police warn of razor blades on gas pump handles in NC city Be careful when you fill up. Lieutenant Brandon Rothrock said the blades came to their attention during an inspection of the pumps by the Department of Agriculture. “He made us aware, earlier today, he said that he was checking some yesterday and found some in Ellenboro, at a Roco Station,” said Lieutenant Rothrock. “So, that led him to check some of our local stations and he found one at 74 Junction.” It also happened at another gas station off Oak Street in Forest City. “There is no explanation as to why someone would do this,” he said. He said all known blades have been removed. “If you’re pumping gas, check, look before you grab. Protect yourself however you need to,” said Rothrock. China
Police Warn That Oregon Torture Suspect Is Using Dating Apps A man accused of torturing a woman he held captive in Oregon, and who was convicted in Nevada of keeping another woman in captivity, is using dating apps to find people who can help him avoid the police or to find new victims, authorities said Friday. Benjamin Obadiah Foster, 36, is the subject of an intensive, round-the-clock search by police after a woman was found unconscious, bound and near death in Grants Pass, Oregon, on Tuesday. She was hospitalized in critical condition. On Thursday night, Grants Pass police, sheriff’s deputies, an Oregon State Police SWAT team and federal agents raided a property in the unincorporated community of Wolf Creek, some 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of Grants Pass, where they seized Foster’s car and arrested a 68-year-old woman for hindering prosecution. Foster managed to escape. Authorities provided no other details, but the area, right off Interstate 5, is thickly forested and mountainous. The arrested woman, Tina Marie Jones, had followed Foster in a vehicle earlier Thursday as he drove to a remote location in Wolf Creek then intentionally drove his 2008 Nissan Sentra over an embankment, according to court documents. Jones then gave Foster a ride to the property that was raided Thursday night and where Foster had been hiding while police searched for him, according to Josephine County Circuit Court records. China
Six British children under five are rescued from Austrian cellar where they were living with 'conspiracy theorist' who had a stockpile of guns and attacked social workers with pepper spray Six British children under the age of five have been found living in an abandoned wine cellar in Austria, in an illegal hideout with a 54-year-old Austrian said to be obsessed with conspiracy theories, and his wife, 40. The youngsters were discovered in the illegal hideout in the small village of Obritz after police broke in following an incident in which the man allegedly attacked social services with pepper spray. Deputy local mayor Erich Greil said after the discovery that the man once told him he had ten children, and that he wanted 'a cellar for each child'. The man is said to have been a 'Reichsbürger', a group of right-wing extremists who believe the German empire still exists as it did prior to World War II, and the current German state is nothing more than an administrative construct. The 54-year-old was described as 'clever' by locals, but they also suggested he was linked to conspiracy theorist groups. The children were reportedly not locked up or neglected, police sources told the Telegraph. There is no suggestion of sexual abuse. They have since been taken into care due to concerns over a lack of proof as to the children's identity. In Austria all births have to be registered by law with local authorities, but no records have been found for any of the children. The parents reportedly claim all five of the children were born in the UK, where their father is said to have been working. China
On 1/28/2023 at 10:24 AM, dfitzo53 said: Tiny radioactive capsule goes missing in Western Australia Missing radioactive capsule: WA officials admit it was weeks before anyone realised it was lost Western Australian authorities are scrambling to find a missing radioactive capsule that is a fraction of the size of a 10c coin, conceding it was not found missing until more than two weeks after it left a Rio Tinto mine site. The 8mm by 6mm capsule is a 19-gigabecquerel caesium 137 ceramic source, commonly used in radiation gauges, and was supposed to be contained in a secure device which had been “damaged” on a truck which travelled from the mine site north of Newman in the Pilbara to a depot in Perth. Authorities are now searching along the 1,400km stretch of the Great Northern Highway for the capsule, which they warn can cause skin burns, radiation sickness and cancer. Robertson urged anyone who found the capsule not to handle it. “People could end up developing redness of the skin and eventually burns of the skin from the beta radiation,” he said. “If it were kept long enough and they were exposed long enough, they could also have some acute effects, including impacts on their immune system and the gastrointestinal system.” Robertson said the capsule was “most dangerous if it is handled or if it is close to the body”. Robertson said officials did not know the date the capsule fell off the truck. Ray said the capsule was placed on to the pallet on 10 January at the mine site, transited and arrived at the radiation service company in Malaga on 16 January. “It was not until the 25th, late morning, when they opened it up to reveal that the device had fallen apart, was damaged in transit, and that the actual capsule was discovered missing, which is when authorities were first notified.” Click on the link for the full article
TheGreatBuzz
I used to teach about a similar incident during radiation safety class. Pretty interesting for those curious. Quote In February 1999 a serious radiological accident occurred in Yanango, Peru, when a welder picked up an 192Ir industrial radiography source and put it in his pocket for several hours. This action resulted in his receiving a high radiation dose that necessitated the amputation of one leg. His wife and children were also exposed, but to a much less extent. The purpose of this report is to provide an account of the circumstances of the accident and its medical aspects https://www.iaea.org/publications/6090/the-radiological-accident-in-yanango#:~:text=In February 1999 a serious, the amputation of one leg. China
Coyotes are chasing skiers at Idaho resort, experts not sure why Coyotes in Sandpoint, Idaho, have been exhibiting “highly unusual behavior,” which includes chasing skiers at Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort. Most encounters at Schweitzer occurred in early January, including an incident in which a skier was bitten. But the Idaho Department of Fish and Game said patrons should be on guard and contact the agency if they spot coyotes on the slopes. “Before the coyotes could be located and dispatched, one bit a female skier,” the IDFG said Friday. “Although her injuries were minor, Fish and Game and Schweitzer Mountain Resort took the matter very seriously. Efforts are still underway to trap and dispatch the offending coyotes.” Coyotes are also roaming a business district near downtown Sandpoint in broad daylight. That’s “extremely rare,” Fish and Game explained, because coyotes are nocturnal and typically wary of humans. The body of at least one “dispatched” coyote has been retained for testing. Experts said it’s unlikely that coyotes in the area are rabid, and they don’t begin to defend pupping dens until April and May. The most likely explanation for this behavior, Fish and Game said, is habituation to humans. Click on the link for the full article

China
'Doppelganger murder': German woman accused of killing her lookalike in attempt to fake her own death A woman has been accused of seeking out a lookalike of herself on social media and murdering her in a bid to fake her own death. Authorities say Sharaban K, a 23-year-old beautician of Iraqi descent from Munich, searched for women who resembled her closely online before killing one of them in order to go into hiding, German news outlets are reporting. The case has been dubbed the "doppelganger murder", in reference to a German folktale about a ghostly identical spirit, but the word doppelganger also has come to mean a stranger who looks like a twin. The victim was eventually named as Khadidja O, a 23-year-old beauty blogger from the neighbouring state of Baden-Wurttemberg. Police later stated the victim and Sharaban K were "strikingly alike" in appearance due to their physical similarities such as straight black hair. On 19 August, officers detained Sharaban K and a friend accused of plotting the scheme. The full extent of the case and their alleged motives were not publicly disclosed by authorities until this week, and it is has now emerged prosecutors believe Sharaban K planned to fake her own death due to a dispute with family. China
Ex Claims Furry Held Her Hostage, Forced Her Into Porn A weapons-loving Wisconsin “furry” allegedly enslaved a vulnerable young woman for almost two years, holding her hostage in an often sweltering bedroom while forcing her to perform for free as a cam girl—pocketing a six-figure income from her work. Austin Taylor Koeckeritz, 29, also steered an underage family member into his lurid world, coercing trysts between her and his bound-and-handcuffed girlfriend, investigators claim in a heartbreaking tranche of court documents obtained by The Daily Beast. They say he even incorporated his alleged “adult entertainment” enterprise, calling it “The Boring Company,” echoing the name of controversial billionaire Elon Musk’s oft-derided tunnel-boring venture. (The one and only account Koeckeritz’s “fursona” follows on Twitter is Musk’s.) Koeckeritz listed himself on LinkedIn as the entity’s financial services officer, and police say he described his alleged sex slave’s role in the outfit as “pornstar.” Through a series of in-depth interviews, as well as voluminous court and police records, The Daily Beast can reveal previously unreported details about the suspect’s life, offering insights into what could have possibly gone so wrong—and revealing how Koeckeritz’s alleged sex slave finally escaped with the help of other women who said they had suffered similar abuse. Koeckeritz’s purported business model appears in some ways inspired by a popular cohort of misogynistic social media influencers. One of the highest-profile examples, accused rapist and sex trafficker Andrew Tate, advises young men to follow his own financial roadmap of crypto investing, drop-shipping branded merch, and, most lucratively, reeling in women and then getting them into online porn. Koeckeritz, who had military training and reportedly kept guns and knives stashed throughout his home, attempted to make money from bitcoin mining, crypto donations, drop-shipping so-called “furry” merchandise and, according to the feds, forced labor. A furry-themed TikTok run by Koeckeritz amassed more than 160,000 followers. Click on the link for the full article

China
Eight dead in weekend avalanches in Austria Austrian police said Sunday that five people had been killed in avalanches in the west of the country, after three deaths were reported Saturday despite pleas for caution on ski slopes. The eight deaths came as resorts are filled during the February school holidays in Vienna, with the avalanche alert level at four on a scale of five after several days of intense snowfall and wind. On Sunday, the body of a 59-year-old man buried while helping the snow removal effort in his tractor was recovered, police in Austria’s western Tyrol region said. Two skiers aged 29 and 33, including a guide, who were carried off-piste on Saturday morning were found dead in Sankt Anton am Arlberg. And a 62-year-old man, who had not returned after cross-country skiing around the summit of Hohe Aifner, was recovered by rescuers and could not be revived, a police spokesman told AFP. The authorities declined to give information on the nationality of the four victims recovered Sunday. On Saturday, a 17-year-old New Zealander who was skiing off-piste, a German man in his 50s and a 32-year-old Chinese man, also said to be skiing outside of the designated routes, were found dead.
