So I NEARLY toughed it out for the guy I've been sat on since 90. 33 picks down. 4 away. And ..... I caved and traded. (Which started a pick earlier as I tried to make a move on the Ravens. Convinced they'd take our guy.). And, for what we see as the small pittance of our 7th rounder and dropping down to 5 selections in 2019, all to get a player who oozes upside with a shed load of untapped potential, all here at the Cowboys couldn't be happier to make the move. 

 

So, it's our great pleasure to announce .....

After giving our Passing Game Coordinator/DB's Coach Kris Richard his perfect prototype corner to mould with our last pick in Round 3-

We now give his boss, DC/DL Coach Marinelli his present with the first of our 4th Round selections. (And a guy who, IRL, Rod Marinelli has gushed about as being his perfect defensive player.). 

 

Justin is an Arlington native. He formed part of a fearsome DE combo @ James Martin High School, just down the road from his new home at AT&T Stadium, opposite the Cleveland Browns stud 2017 1st overall pick Myles Garrett. A 3-Star prospect coming out of HS, he turned down a slew of bigger programmes (Baylor/ Colorado/ Illinois/ Indiana/ Iowa/ Louisianna Tech/ Missouri/ Oklahoma/ Oklahoma State/ Oregan State), to commit to Oregan upon his first official visit as 'everything just felt right.' 

 

And that decision has paid off handsomely as, whilst being manoeuvred all over the Ducks D as they sought to find the best plan of attack from #11, from a 4-3 rush DE to an attacking OLB his last two years in Eugene; he's seen constant year-on-year improvement and growth:

Hollins finished 9th in Oregon history for tackles for a loss his career with 36. And since 2000, he's one of only 19 FBS players with at least 5 sacks/ 5 forced fumbles and an interception in a season! His 5 forced fumbles his final year were tied second,with the likes of Kentucky's Josh Allen,  in the FBS behind Florida's Edge King Jachai Polite. (6.). Justin's 8 forced fumbles through 2017/ 2018 lead the entire Nation over the period. 
 
Which all culminated in him both receiving all Pac-12 First Team honours and being voted the defensive MVP at January's All-Star East- West Shrine Game, which really brought him to our attention for the first time. With the Vikings LB Coach Adam Zimmer coaching the West team, Justin had a phenomenal day putting up 10 combined tackles (3 for a loss), 2 sacks, 2 QB hurries and a fumble recovery. Which rounded out an excellent week where he really stood out, showing far more than he was allowed at Oregon. Particularly in the 1v1 drills were he flashed all week down in Florida. 
 
Justin is a stand-up edge rusher who is devastating off the edge but also comfortable dropping into space. Standing at 6'5, with long 33 3/8 arms and big 10 3/8 hands, he's the ideal length we look for in our D-linemen. He's a little light at 248', but he attacks the perimeter with speed and flexibility, bending the corner well. (As exemplified in his 7:06 3-Cone in Indy.). He has a great first step that gives him the advantage with his initial quickness off the snap to get up the field in a hurry. Hollins has some serious burst (4:50 40) that allows him to close rapidly once he's dissected where the plays going, after extending his blocker, to redirect and react well. 
 
He shows up mostly on tape as a SAM OLB with great edge rush ability. Playing strong and weak. Which showcases his fluid movement and good coverage traits with his depth and awareness on his drops. He has a well-developed tackling technique and finishes violently. And Justin has developed a nice knack of using his great length to his advantage by strip-sacking a slew of QB's, Punching the ball out of their hands. Justin's a terrific athlete who's agility allows him to slip through cracks and gaps as he causes disruption in the opponents back-field. He is also a competent run defender who can hold his own and take on blocks on the edge. 
 
He's by no means the finished article mind. He could definitely do with bulking up a tad as he's a little light right now to help him hold the POA better to more consistently shed his blockers and stay in running plays. But his angular build should allow him to add weight without losing his rapid burst. And Coach Rod will need to open him up to far more rush moves at the NFL level. He's gotten by superbly well with a select few he has down. But variety is a key component if he's going to rival our stellar booke end combo of Tank Lawrence and our major FA acquisition Robert Quinn. 
 
But all in all, we believe we have got excellent value on a serious day 2 talent with speed, good contact balance, quickness and developing strength off the edge who's a good combo of an edge rusher who can comfortably drop into coverage and hold his own against the run. We intend to develop him at DE here at the Cowboys with his versatility also giving insurance for an ageing Sean Lee. And not least Randy Gregory on the edge.

With the 125th pick in the 2019 ES Mock Draft, the Denver Broncos select:

 

RB Bryce Love, Stanford University

 

While the first 3 picks in the Broncos draft thus far were the result of general consensus in the war room, this selection was met with a lot of different opinions on who to select.  With no general consensus on the player, the group decided to go with the player they felt may have the greatest ceiling, and whose presence will hopefully have a positive impact on the development of their franchise QB acquired in the 1st round (Haskins).  

 

Love is coming off a lackluster 2018, which ended with a torn ACL in the regular season finale.  However, in 2017 he was electric, rushing for 2,118 yards and 19 touchdowns as he finished as the Heisman runner-up.  He shocked many by returning to school, even though he was widely viewed as the top RB and a potential 1st round pick.  No doubt his decision to return to school cost him a couple bucks.

 

Yet, the Broncos feel they got a playmaker.  A home run hitter. Even though the Broncos are high on Philip Lindsay and Royce Freeman, Bryce Love is a dynamic talent.  He has high character and is very intelligent.  He has top end speed, good burst, and excellent vision.  He does not shy away from contact.  He is a willing pass blocker and showed improvement in 2018, but there is still room for growth.  His receiving numbers seem to be more of a reflection of the Stanford offense than his ability to be a receiving threat.  The coaching staff believes Love can be successful in the new offense that utilizes a lot of zone blocking.  A RB rotation that has other solid options is an ideal landing spot for Love, at least initially, as durability is probably his biggest question mark (although an ACL is a freak injury, and Love playing well on a bum ankle in 2017 should be more of a gauge of his willingness to play hurt and his ability to play well at less than 100%).  The Broncos believe he can provide a spark and make some big plays when he has the rock in his hands, and is someone opposing defenses will have to account for.  Head Coach Vic Fangio spent last season witnessing what a Tarik Cohen can do for an offense, and he is hoping Love can become a similar threat.

 

While the pundits may sneer at Love being taken this early, The Broncos felt that between his character, physical attributes, and fit into the Broncos system, that they couldn't afford to let Love potentially slip away and that now was the time to pull the trigger.

Joe Giles-Harris, LB, Duke

 

He sprained his MCL last year but I think his overall talent is worth the risk at this point in the draft. He's a relentless and aggressive player that doesn't get fooled by fakes. He's a natural with a good football IQ. I'm sure other GM's were wary of the injury but I'm still surprised he fell this far.

Better to leave a short list if you can. That way if a pick gets made soon then we can make yours and keep it going instead of waiting till the morning, but it's up to you. It's close enough to 10PM that you will not be late if you pick before 6AM

The 'WHO?' 

 

The 'Rainbow Warriors' defensive leader is, by all accounts, one of the best-kept secrets among NFL scouts/ teams. All 32 of whom were at his pro-day 3 weeks or so back. (http://www.hawaiiwarriorworld.com/football/ursua-tavai-impress-scouts-at-pro-day/). With many of them hoping he falls into Round 3. Completely flying under the radar of the know-nothing media mouthpieces like Kiper and McShay. 

 

He first came to my attention when one of the best draft analysts out there, who many pro-teams regularly consult and bounce their boards off his final mock, 'The Athletics' Dane Brugler, was banging the table for this kid back in the summer imploring folk to go watch Hawaii's opener at Colorado State. Now, Jahlani was suspended for that 2018 College Football season opener back in the heady days of late summer on 'Week Zero', a full week before most big programmes get underway. (More on that later.). But Dane had done enough to sufficiently pique my interest. And when you both research and watch Tavai, you quickly find out why he's SO highly regarded in pro-circles. 

 

The 'WHAT?'

 

Jahlani is the very definition of the complete, three-down, modern-day LB. He's completely scheme versatile to fit all 32 NFL teams. A rare and massive bonus in his favour come draft day. He was mainly the 'Rainbow Warriors' starting MIKE backer through the last 4 years. But was seen all over the field in Honolulu (under a mad SIX DC's!) to have him adept rushing off the edge/ run blitzing and dropping into coverage. Showing he'd be a fine MIKE or SAM in a 4-3. Or a ILB/ OLB in a 3-4 D. 

 

He was one of the Mountain West's top defenders through his 4, very productive year's as a starter in college-

He'd not missed a game of football his college career prior to the Grade 3 AC Joint Strain to his right shoulder that ended his senior season last October and kept him from participating at both the Senior Bowl and NFL Scouting Combine. Both of which he was invited to and interviewed at. Leading the team through 8 games when he went down with 82 tackles. All of which lead to him receiving an honourable mention to the MW All-Pro First Team and being selected Hawaii's defensive MVP for the 2nd straight year. 


He racked up a ridiculous 10.3 tackles per-game through the last 2 seasons. (20 Games.). And he had more tackles for a loss the past three season's (36) than games played! (34.)

 

Standing at 6'2, 250' Jahlani is a well built, strong, very athletic prospect. He has outstanding range, moving really cleanly in his drops. A real smooth sideline-to-sideline runner with burst. His motor never stops as he releases from blocks and invariably finds the football. Being real physical at the POA. With a real fine tackling technique that has him wrapping guys up and finishing the play the majority of times he has them in his sights. A lot of which he puts down to his time on the US Men's National U18 Rugby team-

 

''It helped me with open field tackles and how to target the hip,” Tavai said. “As a rugby player, you have to be explosive, not only as a tackler, but also carrying the ball. My tackling ability really increased the last four years.”
 

He's shown to be adept in his drops in both zone and man coverage. Plays the run really well with his mean streak, on-field nature. (By all accounts he's a 'Gentle Giant' and really nice dude off the field.). 

 

A true 3-down, inside/ outside versatile LB with the perfect skill set/ mentality for the modern NFL. 

 

He does need to work on cutting down his steps to get quicker in his change of direction. But that's something we feel we can easily address with pro-coaching. As mentioned above, he was suspended from last seasons opener after he was arrested following his part in a bar fight. Which sounds like a 'Red Flag' until you investigate and find he was defending his friends from a drunk attacker who'd sucker punched a teammate and his fiancée. Which shows to ourselves he has the type of character we want here in Dallas who we believe will become a locker room leader. His coaches say there's nothing to worry about to allay fears in that regard. 

 

The 'WHY?!!!!!'

 

Although LB isn't a glaring need for the 2019 Cowboys, we do like our backers down here in the big State. Having drafted at least one LB 10 out of the last 13 years. Doubling up at the position 4 times over that period. We love to have them as our hustle/ teams players with the versatility to do a bunch of different jobs. And Tavai fits that MO perfectly. Whilst giving us more insurance for Sean Lee in particular. 

 

After extensive study and research, we are inclined to agree with Brugler's assertion that Jahlani is a top 100 talent (he has him going to the Saints in the 2nd FWIW his final mock. His 5th overall LB), who has EVERY chance to go high on Day 2. Our top-rated senior LB in the class. 

 

Welcome to the Cowboys Jahlani Tavai. The under the radar, small school sensation who's causing a World of buzz among pro-scouts as he moves along the path to becoming (what we firmly believe he has every trait to become) a top tier NFL LB.
