It is prime Ewing Theory. Someone like Harper does not come along every year. The Nats have to make a sincere effort to resign him, and then figure it out from there. If they don't the HAVE to extend Rendon, and sign Keuchel/Corbin, Grandal or the like. This is not going to be an easy off season for Mike Rizzo.

What keeps my up at night is him signing with the Phillies.

I get that...he's not the guy you want to face 19-20 times each year in the division.

I would just rather spend that $300M elsewhere (Rendon and pitching, like you said) and bank on Robles, Taylor, Soto, and Eaten in the OF.

The other thing that is overlooked: the 2020 FA class is deeper:

Sale

Rendon

Arenado

Ozuna

MadBum

Gerritt Cole

Didi Gregorius

And, the sleeper of that class: Zack Wheeler.

Baseball isn't basketball. You don't win with one or two superstars, you're better off having a bunch of B to B+ type players due to the nature of the game, with the exception of pitching where you really do want a stud or two at the top of your rotation.

The money not used on Harper can be used to get a better 2B, C, and another P. That will ultimately win us more games than Harper by himself in all likelihood. Remember even when Harper was at his absolute best, the 2015 season, we still got smoked by the Mets in the standings.

The Lerners are worth $5B. I'm not worried about the money. It's their money and they make a lot of it all the time.

As fans, you should worry about the money if it precludes you from signing other people. Whether it SHOULD or not is irrelevant. If signing Harper means that x, y, and z can't be extended or signed, then the money does matter.

Once the MASN money kicks in (they eventually have to pay the Nats), the team can easily afford Harper and Rendon, pay the luxury tax, and still sign FAs without hurting the bottom line.

That is getting reheard in November. Appeals to follow.

It's one of those years--we just never really got hot.

Meanwhile Acuna and Albies are going to be great players and a pain in our ass for years, the Braves were buoyed by a bunch of career years:

Nick Markakis cracking .400 SLG for the 1st time since 2012, an .812 OPS from Charlie Culberson (career .683 OPS), .781 OPS from Kurt Suzuki, Johan Carmago didn't slug over .400 in any minor league year until he did so this year, in the Major Leagues. Anibal Sanchez had a sub-5.00 ERA for the first time since 2014. In 2014, ye had a 4.99 ERA. Sean Newcomb is a bad-Gio clone--5.03 ERA in the 2nd half, and has never walked less than 4 per 9. Kevin Gausman is overrated--4.37 ERA in September, 6.3 K/9 with the Braves. Foltynewicz is their only legitimate starter--although they have a couple of promising pitchers coming up, they haven't proven anything yet.

Figures that we could have the 5th best run differential in the NL and still struggle to stay .500.  This team is not very tough.  Any time someone important goes into a contract year they lay an egg.

Cubs front office person was right. Folding like a house of cards. :kickcan:

The Caps were soft too...until they weren't.

But baseball is harder than hockey in terms of making the playoffs. Its a shame because the NL is really weak this year.

That's what hurts the most. Justcwush Eaton hadn't gotten hurt last year. Just an extra timely hit here or there, that was missing, and could've helped against the Cubs

Funny thing about Eaton--MAT was our best hitter in the playoffs. If we don't give up an infield single to the catcher. If Wieters doesn't forget how to catch. If Baker PH's Kendrick for Wieters with the bases loaded. If he puts Robles in left for defense in Game 3. Whole lot of decisions...
