Barack Obama Accepting $400,000 in Wall Street Speech Fee is Depressing

Don't really care what he says in the speech. It is a totally two-faced move and a betrayal of the wing of his party that cares about Wall Street reform.

So that's all there is to it, huh? If he goes in there and chastises them or tries to explain why we need reform, doesn't matter one bit?

I like you man but your emotion is clouding your judgement on this one.

Hillary's Goldman Sachs speeches were pretty boring.

But they also completely neutered her Wall Street reform message. No one took her seriously on it.

Optics matter. I don't give one flying **** about Obama the private citizen giving speeches. But he's also a major political figure and will continue to be one.

For crying out loud, Donald ****ing Trump was able to seize on this level of hypocrisy and here we are pretending that it's no big deal.

This is not why Donald Trump was elected. Donald Trump was elected because Hillary killed a bunch of people and raped kids in a pizza parlor, and had a body double, and because Donald Trump can fix everything, and because Obama is from Kenya and he's a Muslim terrorist, and whatever the **** else those morons believe...

Optics do matter no doubt, but so does the message. I'd like to hear it before I freak out.

It is absolutely one of the contributing factors. Hillary had zero credibility on a major issue. She really had no way of reconciling her cushy Wall Street connections, with her reform economic message.

It probably lost her votes with her own base and likely some swing voters.

Again, America is chalk full of racists who helped elect Trump. That doesn't mean other factors didn't play a role as well.

And the damage is evident in this thread. decades of sell out politicians, being cozy with the people sucking this country dry is essentially normal to a lot of people.

In contrast:

Quote

Nevertheless, Truman refused to cash in on his celebrity and influence as a former president. He turned down lucrative offers, such as the one from a Florida real-estate developer inviting him to become "chairman, officer, or stockholder, at a figure of not less than $100,000." He would not make commercial endorsements, accept "consulting" fees, or engage in lobbying.

"I could never lend myself to any transaction, however respectable," Truman later wrote, "that would commercialize on the prestige and dignity of the office of the presidency." He did sell the rights to his memoirs for a handsome sum to Life magazine. But he turned down every other enticement to trade on his former position for private gain.

Neither did the person that they voted for. The Trump base doesn't care about facts or issues. It begins and ends with their warped ideology.

And I do have a problem with Hillary's speeches to Wall Street but mostly because of what she said in those speeches.

Giving a speech and lobbying or holding a position while getting paid are two different things. You sure are making some nonsensical statements in this thread when you paint with a broad brush. Again, what bills did Obama sign related to wall street reform and consumer protection? (Hint, that's a lot more meaningful than a speech after he is done serving in public as it pertains to passing legislation."

Eh. The content of the speech is the thing that matters to me.

Nothing but peace and love Vis but I gotta disagree with you on this. I totally get what you're saying but he's getting paid market value for his specific talents. He's not exploiting anything. He's not cheating a system. Getting paid isn't a bad thing in and of itself.

That it's some kind of scandal is just, to me, more purity test feefees bull**** from the Butthurters and then folks trying to exploit that. Don't get caught up in the nonsense.

Mostly racist and stupid. Voting for Harambe or not voting at all was stupid.

Oh, right, they should've just voted for your candidate instead, 'cause anything else is racist or stupid.

Also, should be noted that 'and' denotes the intersection of the two, rather than the union.  You are saying that most of America is both racist and stupid.

Going to be the best $55 I ever spent. Yes, my math is correct. I have an extra toe. Funny thing... it's on my ****.

So it is the toe size ? I wear a size 12 shoe, but my toes are not that big.

Damn, sorry man.

I digress, this is NORMAL. who cares ?

He wants to continue to get paid, he wants to continue to be relative.

Think about it...Carter has remained relative...basically because he was given a forum.

I'm kind of curious about what the contents of the speech itself are before I make a full judgement on this.  Also what Obama's future as an advocate will end up being.

As far as Hillary goes, her hypocrisy was undeniable but in the grand scheme of things it was pretty par for the course as far as politicians go.  Like others have mentioned already the Dems bare the "fight for the little guy" burden while simultaneously trying to win elections within a system where a large percentage of winners raise/spend the most money.  There's going to be constant conflict and  "bending" of principles" in order to compete in elections. It sucks, but it's reality.

Now on a Hillary vs. Trump tip....I still don't think Trump has much room to cry hypocrisy on the issue,  the bigger thing was Bernie Sanders was in the primary, and love him or hate him, I don't think anyone had any questions about his sincerity about his feelings on the rigged system at large. Regardless of who supported who, the D candidates were definitely boxed in by the media, Sanders being the uber-progressive and Hillary being the corporate-centrist.  Fair or unfair that was the image imprinted in everyone's head going into the general election.

Excellent point. Some are racist. Some are stupid. Some, of course, are both racist and stupid.

Mostly stupid though. Very, very stupid.

@Sacks 'n' Stuff , There was not a good option. Funny part is folks didn't go out to vote.

You reap what you sow.

If you put two plates in front of me and one of them has a rice cake and the other has the #2 of a gay porn store who just got off work, neither is a good option but it's still not a hard decision.

BTW, Obama got 65.9 million votes in 2012. Hillary got 65.85 million votes. The difference was that GOP voters turned out. They got very excited for that piece of ****, Donald Trump.

It's astonishing to me that people are still holding onto the "there were no good options" narrative to help sanitize the fact that Donald Trump is our President.

If you still want to say neither option was good? Fine, however I will counter that by saying one option was so incredibly horrible that by default it should have made the other option palatable by most rational thinking folks.

@NoCalMike , I'm not holding on to anything.

I didn't care. Very rare that any President has made their campaign promises come true.

It's all a scam.

@Sacks 'n' Stuff , So you want to watch gay porn ? To each there own.

Seriously though... My point was and always has been experience.

We as Americans are lazy and have no concept of truly building a nation.

It's pretty sad.

Well one option was so incredibly horrible that Trump is now president.  But sure, tell us about how voting for Kodos would be an improvement over Kang.

@Sacks 'n' Stuff , I have no idea what that picture is supposed to represent. None.

My post starting off was clearly a joke as shown by the "seriously though"  part.

My issue is that what you are comparing are not even in the realm of consideration for even ignorant people.

Let it go at this point or find a REAL reason to fight if that is what your position is.

Topic is about a man taking 400k to make a speech...there are very few people that would not.

Wait, haha, you think I had a silver spoon ?

That is far from the case.

EDIT: I knew I should have quoted your original post Sacks.  Well, now I know.

1. Nah man. The picture was supposed to be a guilty expression in response to you asking me if I wanted to watch gay porn. Like... you caught me but I'm trying to play it cool. I know that your post was a joke. I get jokes.

2. I'm unclear here. Your position is that there were no good options. My position is... yeah BUT one was exponentially worse so it's still not a hard choice. I didn't know we were fighting.

3. Agree. This is my position as well.

Glad that's settled. Now back to the gay porn.

Aaaand that 150k votes in the right states would've swung the election.
