NFL.com: Wade Phillips to interview for Redskins DC job (MET)

Gonna post this here as well since we finally have a Phillips thread:

One thing I'm worried about is someone "suggesting" to Phillips that he keep Morris around...he was a yes-man in Dallas, and he's been out of the game for a year or two and might take some staff suggestions from a friend. I really hope he insists on bringing in his own guys after evaluating our DEF coaching staff. Baker and Olivadotti can stay.

Please don't close this.  I think Wade Phillips deserves his own thread.  I even tried to make it when the news broke, but I got nervous that I'd screw it up (you're a brave man, redskins4ever28).

How good of a coordinator is he?  At the least, we know he's not incompetent.  He seemed to work wonders for the Texans, and he seemed to regularly have above average defenses.  He can make our unit play competent football.

Also, why aren't we trying to get Rex Ryan?

I think everyone knows Rex Ryan in unattainable unless you are planning to offer him a HC position.

I just would love to see how much wade can improve this unit with coaching alone, and who he has to replace.

I don't think we'll ever find out the answer to this because I think we're going to drop big money on the DEF in FA this offseason.

Would rather have someone other than Wade.

He has a great 1st year with his new teams and a horrible second year.

Just go and look at his stats.

I believe this team could do better, but I'm sure they'll hire Wade. God knows the Redskins always do the opposite of what is right.

Maybe, but I think we can get some info. from that if Wade is the guy.

He's likely going to loom huge in terms of who we take, Gruden has little idea for defensive players I'm sure, while Smith and by extension Bruce think highly of him.

If we dump big money on certain positions, it's likely because Phillips told us doing so was in our best interests.  Then in terms of coaching we can look at the holdovers from earlier years.  If Perry Riley, or Phillip Thomas, or Jarvis Jenkins (assuming he's here) improve next year, a significant part of that will likely revolve around Phillips' teachings.

The tough ones to be certain of are guys like Trent Murphy, still developing potential up and comers, though I will say if they keep developing, I could not case less if it's Phillips or their own natural progression, though having Phillips likely improves the odds of their natural progression continuing.

His second year in HOU his defense was top 10 in both yards and scoring.

Admittedly, they did go from 2nd and 4th to 7th and 9th, but they were still very good defenses that helped to secure wins for HOU and push them into the playoffs.

The Redskins don't have big money.

We do once we cut some choice people.  With Chester, Hall, Bowen, Golston, Paulsen, and Porter gone, we have 32 million.

We admittedly need to re-sign some people, set aside 8ishM for the draft and a few million more for IR, but we will likely have at least 12-15M in cold hard cash to play with after all that, and for all of Bruce's shortcomings, finding ways to make cap friendly deals with FAs is not one of them.

I'm just wondering why he goes from team to team. If he's so good why does he jump around so much?

Because he didn't make the leap to HC.

He's been a really good coordinator, but when tapped as Dallas' HC he couldn't maintain.  It happens.  Norv was fine as an OC, but was not that great as an HC.

In terms specifically of his latest job in Houston, the offense collapsed since they had no one behind Schaub, who was injured, Foster missed half a season, and Watt had some injuries.  The team, as tends to happen when 3 of your top players are lost for significant stretches, took a nose dive.

The HC was tossed, Phillips was appointed as interim guy, but the owner was always going to bring in his own HC after the season's end.

This meant that the new HC held sway over whether Phillips kept his job or not, and the new HC liked Romeo Crennel.

Nothing really wrong with that, and nothing really wrong with Phillips as DC, it was just a top down shake up.

Well remember on several teams he ended up as HC....then was fired afterwards.  He actually has a winning overall record as a HC (82 - 64) but is better known in the role of DC.  He is a 3-4 specialist, which would fit into our current scheme.  And, unlike Haz, Phillips actually has constructed top 10 defenses at several stops.....so that tells me that his system works and is not predicated on having player X or player Y.

Was hoping that the search would stop after his interview......but guess the discussion will have to be had with Gruden after his vacation is finished.

Not exactly.

Atlanta, maybe.

In two of his last 3 stops, they were better his second or third year.

In Denver, his best year was his 5th. In Buffalo, his best year was his 4th.

But, whatever. Post on.

Agreed, the Skins cap space and having a full slate of high draft picks makes this a very critical year. IF (yes all caps needed) they do things right this offseason with FA and the draft they really have the chance to greatly improve this roster.
