StillUnknown
A league average everday MI is probably more valuable over a season than a set-up guy. It will be interesting to see who takes over the 8th inning, Treinen maybe?
CRobi21
Mark Zuckerman @ZuckermanCSN 5m5 minutes ago #Nats essentially trading 1 year of reliever for 2-3 years of everyday infielder. Escobar signed through '16 w/ $7M club option for '17.

Don't either, but a 1st/2nd round pick seems more valuable than two years of 33/34 year old Escobar.
Warhead36
I'd never pay relievers. Way too volatile of a position. With that said, it was nice going into games knowing that once you got into the 8th, it was lockdown game over. But the overall value of relievers tends to get overblown at times. EvilMonkeyBoy
All the people who cover the Nats seem to be upset solely because they won't get any more good quotes out of him. Their misfortune alone makes me okay with this trade.

Taylor703
I normally give Rizzo the benefit of the doubt due to track record but we lost this trade.
HogNose
Good move, saves money. Escobar is a stopgap until Trea Turner comes up. Clip will be missed but Rizzo is looking towards the future. It's a business.
StillUnknown
I normally give Rizzo the benefit of the doubt due to track record but we lost this trade. Clip's been on top for a while now. This history of middle relievers says he's due for a drop-off at some point. I'm in wait and see mode. Something tells me this could be a precursor to another move. Dan T.
One thing I like about Escobar's numbers is that he's only about an 11% strikeout guy. He's never had more than 75 in a season. In 4,418 plate appearances, Escobar has 498 strikeouts. By shockingly stark contrast, Danny Espinosa has 554 strikeouts in only 1,959 plate appearances. Yeah, Escobar isn't a stud but he at least puts the bat on the ball and makes contact. At worst he'll hit 8th, give us .250 BA and not be a guaranteed 3 strikeout per night guy. We'll get plenty of offense from other guys and with our starting pitching, it's not like we need a lot.
Slateman
But we could have gotten that performance by paying Lowrie or Cabrera, and still keeping Clippard. We might not miss Clip in the regular season, but come the playoffs, we will.

So maybe the Clippard trade was all about putting Escobar at SS this year instead of 2B.

This, from Mark Zuckerman: "His 11 percent strikeout rate last season was better than everybody on the Nats’ roster besides Denard Span." Dan T.
Here's a question from an Ian Desmond fan. Can plate discipline be learned? Can Rick Schu work with a guy like Desi and say "Listen, cut down the swing. We'll take 12-15 homers a year from you instead of 20 to 25 if you cut your strikeout rate down."? Are there examples of free-swinging MLB players who've reversed high strikeout rates?
