Redskins defensive lineman Jason Hatcher is sidelined with a knee injury and will miss this week's veteran minicamp in Ashburn, Coach Jay Gruden said.

Gruden said he expected the pass rush specialist to have an MRI exam on Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury. Hatcher watched practice from the sideline but did not speak to reporters afterward.

Oh no!!!!!  After Jon Beason got hurt a few days ago I heard someone say "now its the Redskins and Eagles turn...."  saying this after Beason (NYG) and Sean Lee (DAL) got injured, guess they were right!

Get well soon, Hatch..... we need your pressure from the inside to dominate on D this year!  (i kid i kid....)

From a medical perspective, the worst thing that can happen in a practice or game is for a player to go to the ground, unconscious, without contact, then you're looking at something possibly related to the brain or circulatory system, and therefore possibly life threatening.

If a player goes to the ground without contact and is awake, then it's possible he sprained something, tore a ligament, tendon, or muscle, or he could have something more serious going on, also not good, but at least there's room for hope.

A guy that goes down with contact and is unconscious, you automatically think concussion.  If he goes down with contact and is awake, it's likely he got the wind knocked out of him, or sprained, strained, or tore something.

If a guy has some swelling in his knee after practice, but didn't report an injury during practice, it's very unlikely it's something that will keep him out for the season.  It's likely he has arthritis in his knees (as does pretty much EVERY football player, even in college), which can be managed since it's something that's a slowly developing process that isn't likely to stop him from activity.  If they don't think it's anything big, it's probably something like osteoarthritis (which is just regular wear and tear arthritis), or he has a minor strain or sprain, both of which are fairly easy to rehab and have no long term issues with them.  None of these things are likely to cause him to miss significant time (meaning games).

There are some really crazy things that could be happening, but it's not at all likely that any of them are happening to him, especially since there's a completely reasonable explanation for this (age and training).  If he were coming in during the offseason before workouts or anything and reported that he'd been resting and had swelling in one knee, then you might be looking at one of those (some crazy bone cancers or gout) however, since he reported these after a significant training event, he's probably just having some swelling and they're taking precautions.

In other words, they're handling the player exactly as they should, but in reality, there's likely nothing wrong with him.  Swelling happens sometimes.  Now, if we find out he reported hearing a snap or pop in his knee, or there was an injury or trauma, that's different.  Right now, all we know is he has swelling, but no one believes it's serious.  It's also likely this isn't the first time it's happened to him.  He's an older football player, this is part of their lives, for the rest of their lives, a lot of times.

Like I said, nothing to worry about right now, especially since the team is already on it and handling it properly, however there's always the fact that we don't have all the information, or the possibility that he's got something weird, but if it looks like a horse, smells like a horse, and sounds like a horse, don't start by calling it a zebra.  It's probably a horse (nothing serious).

This from Hatcher

@hatcher97: My knee is ok. It's minor I'll be ready to kill quarterbacks when the season starts. Just a Lil bump in the road.

5:22pm - 17 Jun 14

Loosely translates to "I'm too old for this mini-camp stuff but I'll be ready for training camp".

I didn't want to say that, but that's pretty much what I thought too.  It's a way for an aging player to be healthy for TC.  Kind of like what Shanahan was doing the last few years, except that I think they really are doing the MRI just in case.

I am not worried about Hatcher's knee until there is a reason to be worried.

BUT in the event that there is something wrong with Hatcher's knee then there is trouble.

We didn't draft a DL at all let alone another penetrating DL.

If we lose Hatcher we're right back to where we were last year with Cofield as the only memeber of the DL rotation capable of providing any pass rush.

Back to hoping Bowen takes a time machine back to to 2011 and Baker/Jenkins improve to provide more pressures.

Wow Hatcher to miss 4-6 weeks after surgery today. Now I'm a little worried.

I'm actually not.  This supports the theory that it's from osteoarthritis, since they may just be cleaning out his knee.  It's routine, and like I said before, this is just something older players live with.  It still sounds like he'll be fine for TC and, most importantly, the season, which is where the team actually needs him.

The fact that it's one knee is also a positive sign for OA.

Here's the article:

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/06/18/jason-hatcher-needs-arthroscopic-knee-surgery-out-4-6-weeks/

And after reading it, that's exactly what they're doing, and what he has:

"Those tests showed that Hatcher needs to have a procedure to clean up cartilage before he will be able to return to the field and Hatcher said, via John Keim of ESPN.com, that he will have arthroscopic surgery on Thursday as a result.

Hatcher expects to be sidelined 4-6 weeks after having the surgery, which would put him in line to return to the field as the Redskins begin training camp this summer. He’ll likely be spending some time working his way back to full speed so that the Redskins don’t have to deal with an extended absence once the season gets underway."

On any other day, this would be the lead topic, the sky is falling, the FO is stupid for signing a guy with knee issues, etc.

Somehow, today there is another topic that has overtaken events.

Personally, I don't think that there's anything to this.  He'll get his knee scoped, rehab, and be ready.
