Redskins Vs Steelers: Post Game-What Did You See?

I disagree, first off being preseason our Defense was running vanilla with no LOS trickery or stunts, odd safety alignments moving forward and backing off, none of the regular season chess moves. Wait till you see Rak, Kerrigan, Jenkins on the field on third and long, talk about pinning your ears back, the only thing I fear is them hitting the parking lot and not making it back until the next play.  Of course the opposing Qb is going running for his life so it won't matter. Hear me now, thank me later, this front seven is about to blow up. Cofield and Bowen will allow the three DE/LBers to get in the backfield in a hurry. Perry Riley has been quiet so far, that stops when the season starts.

I'm not saying our pass rush won't be any good. I'm saying an opinion based off of a preseason game, or two preseason games, or four preseason games, is going to be an ill-informed one.

I think our pass rush will be fine. I think so because we're getting our best pass rusher (Orakpo) back this year on top of a defense that came on, especially against the pass, towards the end of last year and we are getting most of those same players back in the same scheme with the same coach.

But all this talk about journeymen backups outplaying a two-time pro-bowler based on a performance against a vanilla offense with a bad line, a statue at QB and a nobody at RB ... I personally think it's silly. We're getting so close to the season we can taste it. I get that. But we're not there yet. And Redskin fans, of all people, should know that pre-season means virtually nothing.

That is all I'm trying to say.

I don't get caught up in individual receiving numbers. The WR as a unit were very productive.

Without exxageration I think we have one of the best groups of WRs in the NFL.

Are receivers individually don't rack up 'counting' stats but if you look at football outsiders or pro football focus our WRs Hank included rate well.

And they block like a bunch of "Junkyard dogs" as one Richard "Doc" Walker would say :)

I'm not sure what the Steelers are gonna be though.

Their starters on offense weren't out there long and the team as group came out flat.

They didn't gameplan, which was obvious because almost every team will give their Center help against a NT like Cofield.

Part of the issue of monday night was our D played at different level of effort and focus.

But, their 1st team defense was solid against our Cousin's lead first team.

And their rookie 4th round SAF Shamarko Thomas was out for blood.

I honestly believe If our defense plays like it did against the steelers consistently and out offense plays like it did last year consistently and we can avoid injuries to major pieces, I think it's fair to say we have a chance to be superbowl contenders.

Then again IF my aunt had been born with the xy chromosome she would be my uncle lmao

Shamarko Thomas looked like an ANIMAL, however I would love to see him against some starters because he was playing against our 2nd/3rd stringers.

I honestly think the Steelers are going to be good this year, worst case 8-8 best case 11-5. They still have that defense and Big Ben was playing lights out last year before his injury. I agree with you though the steelers did come out very flat but it's encouraging to see we were the team who came out with energy, I don't know how many times it's been us being the team who has come out flat.

I absolutely agree and had brought this up previously about fans being disappointed with the number of catches, yards, TD's that our WR's are going to have all because of the no. of looks. How good could Hank and AR be if we didn't have say, Morgan. I hear a lot of people talk about Morgan, I have yet to see the return on the dollar as I have with Garcon. I love having Moss, but again at what cost? Is the no. of WR's actually hurting their development?

Personally, I love that we have 4 or 5 WRs who can come in and make big plays. Our top 5 WRs had key scores last year (Garcon, Moss, Morgan, Hankerson, and Robinson) and that's not even including the TEs or RBs who made plays. All told, including the post-season, even guys like Paulsen and Royster came up big. I'd prefer that (similar to the recent Saints teams) over having just 1 or 2 guys you can depend on.

The unpredictable nature of this offense and the fact that every eligible receiver is a viable target trumps the development or statistics of any one guy. The important thing is that these guys stay ready to produce when their number is called.

I can agree with this.  But, I firmly believe that Orakpo is a better all-around player compared to Arrington.  I think the reason why Arrington freelanced as a DE was most likely due to not playing the position full-time and never having a mentor in his ear.  Other than Marty here for one season, who did Arrington have to listen to? Marvin Lewis didn't have the galls to talk down the (proposed franchise player) and by the time Gregg Williams got here, Sean Taylor became the new inspiration.

This would be a toss-up and a hard one to distinguish considering that Tapp is playing well in the pre-season and Rak was on the shelf last season.  This is really a hard position that Rak finds himself... one, we now have depth at the linebacking position and there are no true DEs in our system which may make Rak expendable after the season.  While Rak may be a good player, he just isn't worth the kind of money for a system that requires more than hand in the dirt instincts... Rak may prove us all wrong this season and become that natural hybrid that we need for the next couple of years.

Agreed... it's all up to the FO and the market price at which Rak sets himself at.  Make no mistake about it, he will not get the kind of money that Kruger suckered out of Cleveland.

Did you really just pick Tapp over Brian Orakpo after two games of preseason? Like seriously?

I wonder if Cowboy fans with Ware (1 INT his entire career), Bronco fans with Von Miller (1 INT thus far), 49ers fans with Aldon Smith (1 INT thus far as well) want their pass rush specialists to be "more well-rounded" and focus heavily on that?

Now, before you say those guys all have more sacks than Orakpo I'd say stop being so blinded by stats that you can't see:

1) Just how much Orakpo pressures the QB only for the QB to have a wide open space up the middle to walk right up into the majority of his career here. The aforementioned players have had better Dlines in general since they've played in the league as well as guys who can pass rush opposite of them. It's no surprise that Orakpo's highest sack totals came during his rookie season in which Carter was opposite of him and Haynesworth was actually trying at times.

2) Has played on teams with putrid offense's unlike the aforementioned guys the majority of his career here and, for the first time since he's been a Redskin, was on a team that actually had a good offense but got hurt.

I really didn't want to jump into this but, in my mind, the arguments against Rak can get quite ridiculous. I thank God none of the coaches look at him the same way some on here do. They fully understand just what they have with him, and that's a game changer that opposing defense's absolutely have to focus on.

I'm not going to say much more because, as I've already stated, I think Rak is going to make a lot of people look incredibly silly this year so long as he stays healthy, God willing.

Of course, those fans should be very happy if they look silly and have absolutely no ego on the matter once it most likely happens. I hope to see that from them and will be paying attention to it. :)

Jeebus...I haven't heard any media analysts talk about the Redskins like that in well over 20 years lol...

Been trying to tell people. Quite a few mediots that aren't dumb enough to get swept up in the "Racist Shanny Hates Robert!" mess recognize that something special is happening at Redskins Park these days. As of this moment, in my mind, health will be the only barrier between the Redskins and another NFC East crown, and possibly more.

Re-read what I wrote:  I said that it would be a toss-up because one hand, you have a talented player in Rak who has not yet lived up to his billing (mostly due to injuries the past two seasons) and is being widely considered as a one-trick pony while you have a player in Tapp (who is a natural linebacker/ bookend) that has been rejuvenated playing for his hometown team and is cheap (would probably come cheap at season end as well).  If Rak has a modest season and demonstrates his worthiness, then him and Kerrigan will be the two centerpieces on our line for years to come... if not, then you draft another player/ cultivate Brandon Jenskins alongside Kerrigan/ or resign Tapp and add more speed to bring our defense even further.

I am not just basing this off of two preseason games played.

Last I checked denver's dt's are awful and von miller doesn't seem to mind.

The reason expectations are higher for orakpo than kerrigan is because orakpo was a projected top 5 pick who fell whereas kerrigan was a slight reach. It's why expectations are higher for geno smith than a guy like tarvaris jackson.

Rogers was what he was.  I think we were all right (well... those of us who were right :) ) on Campbell... and Ramsey was set up to fail.

We've had a unique look without two of them... w/out Campbell... Collins led a playoff run... w/out Orakpo, we suffered initially, then once we schemed to the strength of our defense, we played well enough to go to a Super Bowl if Griffin didn't get hurt.

The proof is there.  It's up to you how you interpret it or whether or not you choose to

How you interpret it....

Like talking how we could've got to a Super Bowl without Orakpo, but not mentioning our defense was better the year before with Orakpo but couldn't have got to Super Bowl because we had Rex and beck, not RG3 as our QB

Or how Orakpo is expendable because we got better pressure this week without him and were better in the run game, ignoring that the guy everyone is crediting with a monster game (coefield) didn't play last week.

Yep, it's how your interpret it. And people interpret things to fit their preconceived notions and desires.

Great, so you got one team out of the few I mentioned and focused on one point out of the two I brought up in regards to them to make an argument. Well, let me re-phrase that. You made an argument against yourself, lol.

And I don't even mind the "higher expectations" for Orakpo. As far as I'm concerned, he's produced at an elite level. He's absolute disruptive force on passing downs that teams have to ALWAYS account for and he IS NOT A WEAK LINK in the running game at all like some mention. Maybe he was briefly during his rookie year, but I'd love for people to show me some game tape of him failing there.

And please don't mention the friggin Chris Johnson run during a game which he saw his first live action in about a year.

You're basing him being rejuvenated on two games. Tapp is a depth guy. There in no comparison to Rak.

If you don't resign Rak, Tapp is not a suitable replacement. It's not a "toss up"

I don't think I interpret it either or those ways.

I'm not sure how else to say it other than Orakpo is a good player and I am a fan, I want to see him do more because he's capable of it.

Rob Jackson is a better overall LB and is better than Orakpo at everything except rushing the passer, which Rob is not a bad pass rusher either, he's average.

That's not saying Orakpo sucks or he's terrible, it's saying he needs to bring the rest of his game up to his pass rushing game (unless he is a 15 plus sack guy this year).

Quite frankly the defense was the strength of this team after the Ravens game last year.  The offense didn't put up a ton of points in any of the games (other than Cleveland) but the defense gave this team a chance to win every week, even against the Seahawks.

That's what made it a defense capable of winning the Super Bowl.

You're making excuses for Orakpo, he's giving you evidence against those excuses... not sure I see the same thing you are.  Don't take it personally, we are all Redskins fans, I for one hope Orakpo gets a pick 6 or a sack fumble on the first play on MNF, points up to me in the stands, flips me off and says "**** you Adam... that one is for you, you poo butt mother ****er."

I'd blow him a kiss and say, "Get back out there nine - eight, you big pimp" and we'd live happily ever after.

All I've been saying is the evidence points to the contrary and he's had ample time to adjust.

submitted, I love reading your posts and you're well respected by most on here (including me) but I've not seen a post where you take a stance and then back track two or three different times in the same paragraph since I've been here. lol

And I always thought was harsh on Rak . At this point, personally, I don't care whether he is elite or not, I just want him to get out there and let it rip, which he has shown that he can do. Let the chips fall where they may.

Amen, can we "dirt nap" this issue?

We can let it ride if there isn't an extension by season's end.

DG, my bad about this.  Next thread after the Bills game I'll stick to what I saw on the field and won't compare it to anything the week before.  :P

Tapp is rejuvenated? you get that off of two preseason games? you guys are doing it again, salivating over "new players" like kids do with "new toys"

This situation is very similar to people salivating over Pat White's titans showing. Everyone was on the board posting how Pat White was rejuvenated and all it took was 7 days for the love fest to cool off. lol

Tapp is a journeyman and he'll always be that, he's not a viable starter in this league and never will be.

Hmmmm, what did I see... oh yeah... while I don't mind AT ALL Morris's bat swing into the crowd, I did notice Helu's crossing the goal line, placing the ball down, and walking back to the sideline. It may not have shown any 'fun', but to me it showed 'business.'
