Darth Tater
Didn't Gano mess up his back last year? Maybe he's not 100% and may never be? Could be. John Hall was a decent kicker (not great but serviceable) until he got hurt. Tom Tupa was a pretty good punter until he got hurt.

G.A.C.O.L.B.
Really, an upgrade? His kicking percentage last year was exactly the same (76%), of those missed by Gano five were blocks not misses, and Gano has a better leg and is younger...What's the improvement again? How does he have a better leg when his touchback percentage on kickoffs is almost double that of Gano's?
HapHaszard
I'm seeing conflicting reports one saying Gano has not been released and several saying he has. Sounds like yesterday with the Barnes situation of being released and then coming out that he was traded. Time will tell.
garyclarkforhall
Lol, wanna see fans REALLY freak out? Have us spend a roster spot on a kickoff specialist.Hilarious if that's what it is. Every time that Gano is allowed to just kick the crap out of the ball, it starts on the 20 or is returned out to the 15. Every time they ask him to try to kick a stupid corner of the field kick is when he gets in trouble. There used to be some good stat about how few drives that start at the 20 or less end up in points. Perhaps Danny Smith knows something we don't. G.A.C.O.L.B.
exactly.. why is everybody making such a big deal about this? last year we're all ready to run gano out of dc and now all of a sudden hes our star kicker? what has gano done that is worthy of keeping him? and btw, rackers is horrible too thats why he got cut Like I said in my first post, I think everyone's hope and dream is to have a kicker that we develop and is then on the team for 15 years. I think a lot of people felt that Gano was that guy. So this is basically peoples dream coming to an abrupt end.
Unforgiven
Question - if they brought in Cundiff, that would leave them at 76 on the roster. Wouldn't they have to cut someone? They released Gano, he confirmed it himself to multiple people.
Popeman38
Makes perfect sense to me. Ganooooooo gave me a heart attack everytime he came on the field. He had no confidence. He was less than 50%b between 30-39 yds. Just terribleHe missed 5 from between 30-39 yards -- 4 of those were blocked. Video review over the offseason broke down how none of the 5 blocks were the fault of Gano, but on breakdowns in the blocking scheme.
SWFLSkins
I have a feeling it has to do with trajectory. I know that sounds ridiculous, but just stay with me for a second. If over 50% of Cundiff's kickoffs end in touchbacks (27% of Gano's), I'd guess that a large part of that is because he kicks at a higher angle, allowing the ST guys to get down to the end zone closer to when the ball is caught (because I don't think any kicker kicks over 50% of their kickoffs through the back of the end zone). If that's the case, then it makes sense on FGs too, especially when we've had problems with blocked kicks. If he gets the ball vertical more quickly than Gano, then that means less of them are blocked. Some more comparisons, Gano's career FG% 73.8, Cundiff's 76.7. Cundiff has missed 1 XP in 201 attempts, Gano has missed 2 in 61. Cundiff had 44 touchbacks last year and 40 the year before that, Gano had 32 last year and 9 the year before. This is all, of course, total horse **** until someone clarifies it, and I'm just trying to make some sense of things because I was as baffled as everyone else. But, let's hope for the best. At least I won't be nervous EVERY time the kicker is on the field (XPs included). This should be mandatory reading for this thread, great job J. You brought up some really good points though JFlow, something I never considered in concern to the blocks and the kickoffs. I will have to trust Shanahan on this one and think that maybe it was Danny Smith that was such a big Gano fan. Who knows except them. I will be watching the game Wednesday on kicks for sure. I hope we have some field goal opp's and this thing figures itself out real quick. Life of an NFL kicker, wow, tough job.
Unforgiven
@GrahamGano : I would like to thank the Redskins organization for the 3 years I spent with them. I will miss my teammates and I wish you the best of luck!

Boss_Hogg
It's a kicker and we're not a playoff team. Does it really matter? The board is going to crash over Gano? Wow, just wait until nex week when Cooley is released. I don't want to hijack the thread but... Cooley's release has been written on the wall for sometime now. The Gano cut was shocking. MustangSteve
Mark my words, this one move will cost us a game, if not more than one. Gano has cost us many games because of missing easy field goals early or late in games. Look back at the games lost the last few seasons and we have lost many by 2 or 3 points, and in many of those losses, Gano has missed at least one field goal. Our coaches see and know things that us fans don't, and it's obvious they feel we are a better team with Cundiff than with Gano.

Darkstarr
Not gonna sugarcoat this. Dumb ****ing move. You don't pick up a kicker that ended his teams playoff run by missing a 32 yd chipshot. 32 ****ing yards! We will regret this. I ton of great kickers have missed big fg's M. Anderson for atlanta, G. Anderson for Minn. Rackers for Arizona, Scobee for jax. J. Stanarud for kc. history is full of reliable kickers missing big fg's in playoff and to get in playoffs. I just do not believe this move regardless of who is there truely makes a differance atm. I repeat Neither of said kickers is Adam V.
zCommander
So adding Cundiff is going to fix the FG protection how? Because he is quicker.
2STaylor1
imagine the look on Ganos face when they told him they were cutting the only kicker on the team.. that said i have always been a Gano fan and wish he would have worked out. now he will be a stud for another team
War Paint
Hmmmm...I honestly don't have a problem with this. Gano never made me feel at ease when he lined up for a kick. I think people are more worried about us repeating the Akers situation more than anything else. You can't worry about things like that. Gano didn't produce at the level we wanted, so we moved on. Darth Tater
Yes I do realize that some were blocked but I'm not putting all of them on the line. Gano's trajectory was also a problem Not according to Mike unless he was lying.
Skinz4Life12
gano has missed several chip shots that were not nearly as high pressured as the one cundiff shanked last season. i like the move personally
Unforgiven
The FG protection was a 1 year anomaly on an otherwise solid special teams unit. I'm sure one of the main things Danny Smith did this offseason was work on correcting that.
