Game Day thread, Shred the Colts, Bob vs. Andy pt. 1

Is it too early to start this, especially for a preseason game? NAH!

I'm actually really curious to see if we get nailed with heavy rain, which it looks like we will. It'll be interesting to see which quarterback handles soggy conditions better.

This system is traveling almost directly South to North, and the timing looks like it will be over the area right at game game.

I hope it's a great game and I hope no one gets injured. So happy the Skins play today.

I really want to see a little more out of Griffin, Crawford, the safeties, I'd love to see who is going to take over return duties if Banks isn't on the team, want to see Hightower play well. I'd also like to see our defense start to make some of those INTs.

I'm sure i'm going against the grain here but i really want to see the running game take off today. Like 100 plus before the half for our guys.

That and I want Shanny to really struggle figuring out cutdowns due to the great play across the team as a whole.

Loooongtime redskin fan can hardly contain the anticipation for the upcoming season, feel there is legitimate hope with RGIII throwing to Santana and Pierre,

Hopefully todays game will be an orchestra.

But agreed that the running game needs to go full on also.

Hightower and Helu, solid tandum

GO SKINS

Not sure if Helu will be a go today.

Believe he has a sore shoulder.

I think it will be Hightower & Morris.

Both Helu & Royster are banged up.

Probably will see a lot of Tristan Davis today as well.

I want to see more outta RGIII. I want to see him get in sync with his wideouts and tightends. Want to see our secondary step up and shut Luck down. Want too see at least one pick from our starting secondary or linebackers. Also want to see Banks return another kick for a touchdown. Banks will make this team on his return ability alone. Despite what Shanny says.

Yeah, all I've heard during training camp is that Banks needs to show he brings something as a WR and not just a kick returner. It seems like he returned 1 kick last week and some fans decided that whole WR idea didn't matter anymore, but the coaches already knew what he could do as a returner.

Anyways, expecting Morris to get the bulk of the carries with Hightower getting worked in some on 3rd down pass situations and a few runs here and there.

Hopefully RG3 has enough protection today to allow him to make some reads and go through his progressions.

Wrong.

I might be TK. Maybe my man crush is shining through a little too hard. Clouding my judgement. MAYBE.

We shall see come cut time. I still think he makes the team regardless of what he does at wide reciever. Again we shall see.

All of you really need to give up on the idea of Banks getting cut.

Seriously...

It's more embarrassing than my Mickey Mouse thread.

:ols:

The guy scores TD's.

Makes plays, when you need them the most.

He's also pretty darn good at holding on to the ball for being so little.

I'm sure the Bears a few years ago when Devin Hester was moving from CB to WR, didn't say....

"You know...this Hester guy scores every time he touches the football, gentleman.

Yea, I know...He's a dangerous weapon for this team. We sure need that kind of skill with our offensive problems.

But, if he doesn't beat out of few WR's, were going to have to waive him...I'm sorry.

I would rather him run 35 yard hitch & go's, than scoring 95 yard Kick or Punt returns at vital times, during a game."

Brandon Banks will not be cut or waived...

Wrong.

Maybe. But I doubt I'm wrong. We shall see come cut time.

My magic ball is currently in the shop and I can't see the future right now.

Couldn't agree more. It amazes me how many people want Banks gone. The guy makes plays. Period. Why cut him for a 6th wideout who will never see the field?

You do realize in the past 2 years that Banks has returned a combined 171 punts/kicks. Of those 171 returns he's scored 1 TD and fumbled the ball 9 times.

He ranked 20th in yards per return in kickoffs last year. He ranked 21st in yards per punt return. (He was 12th on kickoff and 9th on punts in 2010)

I'm not hating on him, but let's not pretend like he's some top 5 returner that is beyond question. He needs to do more than simply return kicks/punts.

ES Coverage: 2012 Redskins vs Colts

8/25/12

KDAWG PREGAME NOTES

RG3. Luck. That’s the storyline for today’s game featuring the visiting Indianapolis Colts and the hometown Washington Redskins.

Andrew Luck has wowed everyone with his poise in the pocket for the Colts, and despite a few rookie miscues, he’s been all that he’s been advertised to be in this preseason. 26/41, 63.4%, 363 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT. Solid stat line for a rookie quarterback. RG3 has been scrutinized around DC for his performance in last weeks game against the Bears, but I thought he never lost his poise, and statistics don’t show his true value. He has an outstanding quick release, solid footwork and he makes good decisions with the football. RG3 is 9/14, 64.3%, 119 yards and 1 TD with 0 INT. His sample size is low, but he should get a ton of playing time against the Colts starters in today’s game.

But there are other storylines to follow in today’s game. Can Alfred Morris continue to be a human wrecking ball? From my eye, without the view of coaches film or knowing exactly what he’s coached to do, Alfred Morris has had incredible vision, and once he make a decision, he plants his foot and tries to remove torsos from defender’s bodies. He has great body lean and decent feet, and the dude just wants to hurt people. Royster makes great reads, and while not as powerful as Morris or as athletic as Helu, he makes smart cuts and has a ton of heart. The combo of Royster and Morris is intriguing beyond belief.

The receiver battle is alive and well. Keep an eye on Brandon Banks, Aldrick Robinson, Dezmon Briscoe, and Anthony Armstrong in this one. If you get a chance to watch them individually, keep an eye on their route running. See if they use their hands to get off the line of scrimmage, and if they can stem a defender (bait them) into going one way before cutting the opposite direction. Banks’ speed allows him separation, but his sloppy cuts have cost him that space and allowed defenders to catch up. If Aldrick Robinson can continue to play like he did against Chicago last week, he could really help his cause. He leads the team in receiving (8 receptions, 132 yards, 1 TD). And Briscoe is in the same boat as Aldrick. If Richard Crawford continues to impress at CB and return man, and with Robinson and Briscoe playing well at receiver, Banks needs to have a very good game to keep his spot safe.

I’ll be focused on the offensive line. I want to see how well they get on their blocks in Shanahan’s stretch zone scheme, and how well our tight ends seal the edge. If the ends get too far upfield on the stretch, the backs need to cut it inside. If the ends get sealed, the backs should hit outside. As far as tight ends go, I think we’re going to see more three tight end sets to help keep RG3 upright, so you’ll get a heavy dose of Davis, Paul and Cooley.

Defensively, it’s a lot simpler. The absence of Rak should allow Rob Jackson the chance to refine his game. Keep an eye on Cedric Griffin at corner. I’ll try to keep him in my crosshairs and attempt to fill everyone in on coverage he’s in and what his responsibilities were. He’s been a liability thus far, and he’s helping Crawford’s cause. I’ll also be watching PR56. I like his range and tenacity, it should be fun to see him flying around the field against the Colts starters. Chris Baker is another guy to keep an eye on. He’s done a great job and getting leverage on the OL while creating separation. With the unfortunate injury to Neild, Baker could really help his cause in getting a job with another solid performance.

The national media theme for this one is sure to be Luck vs. RG3. Number one pick, number two pick. Heisman favorite, Heisman winner. But they don’t compete with one another. As simple as it sounds, I can’t wait to see how we match up against another team’s starters for a prolonged period of time, even if it is the Colts who are in total rebuilding mode.

Keep glued to this thread for updates and more fun. Follow me on twitter @KDawg_ES as well.

MURF'S TAKE

Not only does tonight's game represent the dawn of a new day at FedEx Field, with Robert Griffin III making his home debut. But it also represents a last chance, of sorts, for bubble players to show they're deserving of a spot on the 53-man roster.

With the fourth (and typically meaningless) preseason game just four days away, this might be the best chance fringe guys have to show the coaching staff and front office they're worth keeping around. Off the top of my head, here are a few guys who would do well to have a strong showing against the Colts:

Anthony Armstrong, receiver -- It was only two seasons ago that Armstrong represented Washington's best option as a deep threat in the passing game. Unfortunately for him, since then, the Redskins have seemingly moved on and appear content turning to others.

Brandon Banks, return specialist -- Sure, he's scored a touchdown in each of the last three preseasons, but Banks cannot make the team as only a special teams player. That's means he's got two more games to prove he's capable of playing on offense.

Kevin Barnes, cornerback -- The better a guy like rookie Richard Crawford plays, the more unlikely it seems that Barnes will be able to stick around.

Graham Gano, kicker -- I fully believe he's going to win the kicking job over Neil Rackers, but Gano would be wise not to push his luck anyway.

Aldrick Robinson, receiver -- His performance against Chicago seemed to confirm that, unlike Banks, Robinson is able to make plays on offense. Was he a one-week wonder or can Robinson continue to earn the trust and respect of his quarterbacks?

Dezmon Briscoe, receiver -- There's a lot to like about Briscoe, who also caught a touchdown pass against the Bears. Another solid outing would only strengthen his grip on a final roster spot.

Cedric Griffin, cornerback -- I don't want to bad mouth him, but I have yet to see anything along the lines of an impact play since the "other" Griffin came to town.

Brandyn Thompson, cornerback -- Like Barnes, Thompson appears to be getting pushed down the depth chart because of the play of guys like Crawford.

Kedric Golston, defensive end -- There are a lot of talented players on the Redskins' defensive line. Can Golston rise above the pack in one of the few areas of legitimate depth on this roster?

Chris Cooley, tight end -- I still don't think he's going anywhere, but I'll put Cooley on the list because he's earning a lot of money to be a backup tight end/fullback at the moment.

Well, last year he was stabbed.

And I know he's had more than 1 TD return called back because of penalties, too.

Is he Devin Hester good yet?

No

But he's more capable than anyone on our roster.

Not to mention, the dude is simply a gamer.

He can be used for gadget plays, including the TD he threw.

I'm not saying he doesn't need to improve his game.

But I would rather have a guy with his skills set and ability to turn the game around on 1 play, than a #5 CB or WR who will never see the field.

I mean seriously, I'd cut Doughty before cutting Banks.

How many games has he cost us, alone?

I just believe Banks is too valuable to us, than without him.

At least for now...

This is what I'm gonna be watching too. I hope to see some improvements from last week, but even if we don't, I'm still pretty confident RG3 will be able to handle himself pretty well under pressure.

KDawg-

o I'm curious how our OL handles their assignemnts at the point of attack.

Over the preseason games I get the feeling that the OL seemed in such a hurry to get to the second level that they left their POA double team too early to attempt to get to the second level and the play often ended up getting stuffed at the LOS.

-Did you watch Willie Smith against the Bears? If so what did you think of him?

I thought he looked good at RT, better then Polumbus imho.

o I like Morris too, reminds me of a mini-Michael Turner.
