I think the Goff signing is awesome. Great against the run, young, and provides excellent depth at a position of need. Curious about the status of the anterior cruciate, but otherwise, welcome aboard, Jonathan!

Didn't he hurt it before last season even began? If so, he should be well on his way to recovering

I really like the Goff signing. Guy was a starter at the Giants before his injury. If he recovers well, then we have a starter quality backup.

It's also worth noting that we've gone from 1 ILB on the roster to many more than that.

Fletcher, Riley, Goff, Kehl, Robinson, Alexander, etc.

We've gone from below the minimum number to stacked in under a month. Solid work by the FO there.

And I suspect Rackers will probably follow the same path Shayne Graham did last year, in that he'll compete with Gano in pre-season, and Gano will win. Rackers will then probably end back up with the Texans on a 1 year deal.

If we actually block for Gano this year I suspect his % will be much better.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm still trying to get used to us having a competent front office! It feels like a dream ... :ols:

Agreed. If you read the news outlets you would think the sky is falling.

Goff looks solid. The best part is he is relatively young.

Rackers is OLD. Keep Gano. I just picture him turining into David Akers on another team. Gano gets better each year.

Been thinking the same thing. Gano has been enduring some growing pains, sure. But he's definitely got the leg to be a great kicker and we should let him develop along with our young team.

A Giants fan uploaded Goff's tape vs teams, highlights and lowlights all on youtube from 2010.

"More and more I watch the games I realize he is our best LB (may be a good thing or bad thing). goff makes so much more plays than boley." (This was before JPP)

Just those 2 are the ones where he shows every play from 2010, top one is vs the Vikings, bottom one vs Lions.

I completely agree. It would be beyond absurd to think that Gano would beat out Rackers, but hey strange things happen.

And like I said, when Gano and Rackers tie in preseason and camp, and Rackers ends up getting cut, and Gano stays, I'm waiting for the inevitable meltdown.

It's going to be funny.

Agree. I hope Gano beats him out. Not that I don't like Rackers, but Gano is much, much younger and could be our long term answer if he improves.

Gano sucks! i'm tired of that choke artist, he should've been cut two years ago

I hope Gano beats out Rackers. Half of his misses were blocks.

If Goff is starter material then Riley may not be considered ready for the job. They might be giving him another year on the bench

For everyone who's convinced Rackers is an automatic, no-brainer upgrade over Gano, remember the Cowboys as a cautionary tale...remember when they decided to replace Billy Cundiff and Shaun Suisham with:

Cowboys sign Vanderjagt to three-year contract

Breaking from their recent history of employing young placement specialists who worked for minimum wages, the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday signed unrestricted free agent kicker Mike Vanderjagt, a colorful eight-year veteran who is the NFL's career leader in field goal percentage.

[...]Dallas lost three games in 2005 by three points or fewer, and that may have swayed the team's thinking in pursuing a more proven and dependable placement specialist....

Vanderjagt, who turns 36 next week, has converted 217 of 248 field goals, and that 87.5 percent success rate is the best in league history. He has also made 344 of 346 extra point tries....

Cowboys sign Vanderjagt, NFL's most accurate kicker

Mike Vanderjagt, the NFL's most accurate kicker who was no longer needed in Indianapolis, signed a three-year contract Thursday with the Dallas Cowboys...

After depending so long on inexperienced or inexpensive kickers, the Cowboys didn't pass on Vanderjagt, a former Pro Bowl kicker and unrestricted free agent.

Cowboys get Vanderjact

you know honestly i was pulling for us to get either vanderjact or vinitari (sp?). I will be able to breathe alot better in close games with a reliable fg kicker.
I think a lot of the comments are being made simply because it's a Dallas signing. We would be pulling out the stats just like they are if we signed him. Fact is, he's a helluva kicker and a solid pickup.
Because they were able to steal away the one kicker they thought was more clutch that Vandy.

And they may be right.

But you still cant deny Vandy's accuracy and extremely consistent kicking over the years.

This is a great signing by the boys and scares me.
This is an excellent pick-up for the boys. In the regular season where we will see them twice this guy doesn't currently have an equal.
Hate to burst your bubble, but he actually has a higher field goal percentage outdoors, than indoors. Look it up.

Even your own fans are saying its a huge signing for us. If you had signed him you'd be dancing in the streets right now.

Then...half way through the season:

Cowboys release shaky Vanderjagt, sign Gramatica

This is how serious Bill Parcells is taking the Dallas Cowboys' stretch drive: He cut inconsistent kicker Mike Vanderjagt on Monday.

Hailed as the answer to the Cowboys' kicking woes when signed in March, Vanderjagt wasn't living up to his statistical claim to fame as the most accurate kicker in league history. He was only 13-of-18 on field goals, a 72.2 percent success rate that was the lowest of his nine-year career.

From Wiki:

In Week 9, (Vanderjagt's) potential game-winning field goal was blocked by the Washington Redskins as time expired. In Week 11 against his former team, the Colts, he missed his only two field goal attempts, (both of these misses were also wide right) making it the first time since 2001 since he had done so. The fans were so upset, they booed a commercial he appeared in on stadium monitors. On November 27, 2006, Vanderjagt was released by the Cowboys and replaced by Martín Gramática.

He never played in the NFL again lol...

The two guys Vanderjagt replaced?

Cundiff: still kicking in the NFL (Ravens)

Suisham: still kicking in the NFL (Steelers)

This doesn't mean that the Cowboys should have stuck with Suisham and/or Cundiff...but you should definitely keep yourself from thinking Rackers is gonna be better--because most of that is based on name recognition.

Neil Rackers says he’s signed with the Redskins

By Mark Maske

Veteran kicker Neil Rackers told a Houston television station that he’d agreed to a one-year contract with the Washington Redskins as a free agent to compete with Graham Gano for the Redskins’ kicking job.

The Redskins did not immediately confirm the deal Tuesday evening.

But Rackers told KRIV-TV that he’s “headed to Washington” after meeting Monday with Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan and special teams coach Danny Smith.
