Iraqi woman beaten in her California home dies

An Iraqi woman who was left brutally beaten in her Southern California home with an apparently xenophobic note beside her has died.

Shaima Alawadi, a 32-year-old mother of five, was taken off life support Saturday, said the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), an organization that advocates for Muslim civil liberties.

She had been on life support since Wednesday when her teenage daughter found her unconscious in the living room of their home in El Cajon in San Diego County.

"During the initial stages of this investigation, a threatening note was discovered very close to where the victim was found," Lt. Mark Coit of the El Cajon police said.

Authorities would not specify what the note said. But Alawadi's daughter said it threatened the family to go back to Iraq and called them "terrorists."

Police said a similar note was left outside the family home earlier in the month, but the family did not report it.

"A week ago they left a letter saying, 'This is our country, not yours, you terrorists,'" the daughter, Fatima Al Himidi told CNN affiliate KGTV. "So my mom ignored that, thinking (it was) kids playing around, pranking. And so the day they hurt her, they left it again and it said the same thing."

I didn't see anything about this on here so far, but it's been all over twitter since last night.

Hate crime or was it murder? I was reading some comments to this story from this link to the story:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/24/shaima-alawadi-dead_n_1377724.html?icid=maing-grid7|main5|dl2|sec3_lnk1%26pLid%3D146364

and most there were saying they don't believe this, it's fishy. They say it was husband and he wrote the note to throw the police off.

We will see. Seems like hate crime murder to me.

Cali still has the death penalty, right?

Yeah California has the gas chamber and lethal injection. In my opinion these methods are much too humane but at least they serve their purpose.

Anyway hopefully they catch the monster(s) responsible. What a horrific story.

I gotta admit, there's something fishy about the note to me, too...can't quite put my finger on it.

They say that a not was also found earlier and never reported. Maybe the husband wrote both to throw the scent off of him, but I doubt it.

Well, usually, when you kill someone--especially in such a brutal manner--you don't leave a note next to the body lol...if a message was wanting to be sent, then it's usually done big, like writing "Terrorists" on the wall or something. Who was supposed to read the note?...If a family member comes home and sees the mother bludgeoned to death, they're not even gonna pay attention to any note left nearby, nonetheless pick it up and read it while waiting for the police and ambulance to arrive. If the police are the first ones to read it, then the note loses its potency since they weren't the intended audience for the note. The note next to the body seems more like a poorly thought out staging than something a hate killer would pre-plan.

True.... but from what I see the attacker left her alive so there is a SMALL chance that the attacker wanted to leave her alive so that she could "return to her own country" after she got out of the hospital.

More info on the family:

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/story/2012-03-24/iraqi-woman-california/53752198/1

The family had lived in the house in San Diego County for only a few weeks, after moving from Michigan, Alzaidy said. Alzaidy told the newspaper her father and Alawadi's husband had previously worked together in San Diego as private contractors for the U.S. Army, serving as cultural advisers to train soldiers who were going to be deployed to the Middle East.

Mohebi said the family had been in the United States since the mid-1990s.

A family friend, Sura Alzaidy, told UT San Diego that the attack apparently occurred after the father took the younger children to school.

In that case they would have just yelled it at her either before or while beating her...the whole idea of "Here...read this when you become conscious again" doesn't seem real lol...

Then again, I'm going off VERY little info I read in the OP.

but if this was the husbands plan wouldn't he make sure she was dead on the scene so there would be NO CHANCE she could tell the police what really went down? I feel like I'm on Law and Order or something lmao.

Ok, so they received both a threatening note, and then the mother was murdered, within 2 weeks of moving into the house?

They weren't there long enough to make any enemies...actually even hate crimes don't usually take place that quick, unless it's a spontaneous attack in public, like on a street--like a scenario of two skinsheads see a black man walking at night and right then and there decide to "do something"...those types of spontaneous attacks don't usually occur inside the person's house. If this is indeed a hate crime this would seem to be carried out by someone within the neighborhood since it happened so quickly after moving in. If it's not a hate crime, then the family brought the "enemy" with them from Michigan in some manner, I would think.

I dunno...just too many question marks in this case so far.

:ols: :ols: Yeah, this thread will probably turn into a script for Law & Order lol...

And you're right, the husband would indeed have made sure she was dead. Maybe he thought she was??...Or maybe it's not the husband at all, but also not a hate crime?...Hell, I have no clue.

Somebody watched too many movies and TV shows. I don't know if it was the husband, but somebody that knew her did this for some other reason. The chances are slim to none that she would be the random victim of such a brutal incident in an area with so many Middle Easterners and other minorities.

http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/Shaima-Alawadi-Beating-Death-El-Cajon-Iraqi-Woman-144208885.html

Iraqi Woman's Death a Hate Crime: Friends
Services at an East County mosque were held Sunday to honor an El Cajon woman who was found severely beaten inside her home with a threatening note left nearby.

Friends of Shaima Alawadi, 32, remembered a warm, loving woman who was a wonderful mother to her five children.

“When you add violence against woman, the loss of life of a mother on top of that and the fact that this innocent woman may have been targeted solely because of her appearance and her set of beliefs, it’s a strike not just at the Muslim community but at the humanity for all of us here in San Diego,” said family friend Kamaal Martin.
On Sunday, the family was making plans to fly Alawadi's body back to Iraq.

Alawadi's father is Sayed Nabeel Alawadi, a Shiite cleric in Iraq, a Muslim leader in Michigan told the Detroit Free-Press.

Hayder Al-Zayadi, a family friend, told the Free-Press that Alawadi moved to the United States in 1993 with her family and was part of a wave of Shiite Muslim refugees who fled to Michigan after Saddam Hussein cracked down on an uprising in 1991.

After living in Dearborn for a few years, she moved to the San Diego area in 1996, graduated from high school and became a housewife raising five children, Al-Zayadi said.

Thousands of people have liked a special page on Facebook calling for "One Million Hijabs for Shaima Alawadi."
