Set during the time of the first outbreak of bubonic plague in England, a young monk is given the task of learning the truth about reports of people being brought back to life in a small village.

Wasn't really expecting a whole lot out of this movie, but I was surprised. Great performance from Sean Bean, who leads a group of ragtag "Men of God" through the wilderness and into a village said to be home to a sorceress, and they are led there by a monk who hopes to find his lady there.

Pretty violent movie ( right up my alley). Tons of brutal kills/death scenes, and a good plot. The ending is ****ed up though. Definitely leaves a bad taste in your mouth (in a good way).

Oh, and...

I'm sure you can find me talking about it in here a year or so ago. One of the best movies never talked about ( the second one, while solid, was nowhere near as good as the first, which is a classic imo). This girl I've been going out with challenged me to find a really good horror movie that she hadn't seen (we're both horror fanatics). The Descent has been the ace up my sleeve for while now. So she came over Saturday, and watched it with me. This is one of the best movies to watch in the dark with surround sound. Even for the big horror junkie that she is, she was jumping left and right. There are many many scenes in this movie (besides the ones that terrify you) that just flat out make you uncomfortable.

Best thing about it is that it's not just a horror movie. It is so much more than that. So, if any of you haven't seen it, watch it, asap. You won't be disappointed (unless you're a movie snob. Movie snobs don't like anything that isn't Casablanca or Gone With The Wind).

You're welcome.  :)

PS, the girl that plays Juno is sexy as hell. Good god.

Black Death was in my netflix queue forever and i started to watch it one night and was like...nahhh. I'll have to give it another go. Sean Bean seems to have gotten typecast lol

Also, is the Descent a lot of torture stuff that modern horror movies always seem to be now? I'm just tired of seeing all that for the most part. Hopefully that is different.

How much did you watch? It starts pretty slow, and doesn't really pick up until they reach the forest, on the outskirts of the village. You definitely do get some Boromir flashbacks, what with the fight scenes, armor, the fact that he is being led by another kid on a mission, the time period, and a few other scenes, but it doesn't take anything away from teh movie itself.

Nah... No torture porn here (just fear/terror, claustrophobia, disorientation, and guilt... Plenty of guilt). I despise those movies.  There are a few underlying plots in the movie that give it a vastly different feeling. A different director, and a different cast couldve easily made this a titty/sex gorefest though, if they tried the same overall approach.  It could almost be interpreted as somewhat of a revenge movie, along with the adventure/survival/horror elements. There's no shortage of gore though, but it isn't whats featured... Just a byproduct.

Can't really be interpreted as a "Now" movie anyway, considering that its almost 10 years old, and the sequel came out in 2009. I will say that having a mostly all woman cast was a genius move though, because women convey fear and terror/uncertainty to the audience better than men. They nailed it.

Saw "Catching Fire" on Friday and liked it but I actually liked the first one better.  Saw "Dallas Buyers Club" on Sunday and like that one also.  Finally, saw a screening of "The Day of the Doctor" - the 50th Annivesary episode of the British TV show: Doctor Who and liked it.  More so as a stand alone episode than an episode celebrating the 50th episode.

Throw me into the group that liked catching fire better than the first. Having not read the books, the ending really made the movie for me.

Also saw the Great Gatsby. Eh. I liked Dicaprio, usually do, but the music killed it for me. I hate movies that pull out all of the stops for props and costumes in order to bring the time period to life and then ruin it by throwing Jay Z in it. I don't mind listening to rap in an action movie or more current movies. It's not the rap itself, even though I am not a fan, but it took me out of the movie. Strange thing is it stopped halfway through. It was like they realized they were messing up and decided to squash the music and try a little harder. Being a musician the soundtrack is really important to me.

Interesting take on Gatsby, I think a lot of people felt that way. I didn't mind it. I thought it was cool mix of the era of the movie brought to life by modern hip hop of the soundtrack. I enjoy a lot of the tracks from the soundtrack anyway so maybe that had something to do with it. Overall I really liked the movie too. I'm a big Leo fan and fan of the book so it was a great match.

I probably got 5 minutes into Black Death then realized I wanted to do something better with my night. I'll watch it again though I just realized I wasn't in the mood that night.

Good to hear on Descent too. I didn't know it was a little bit older. Definitely going to check it out.

"The Way Way Back," with Steve Carell, Sam Rockwell, Toni Collette.  I really enjoyed this one.

"The Call" with Halle Barry.  Okay you guys, this movie was crazy fun.  Wasn't nearly as bad as I expected it to be.  Non-stop thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.  Its got the girl from Little Miss Sunshine.  Definitely check it out

Man of Steel wasnt terrible.

I think only the purists thought it was. My BIL hated it because he's a huge Superman fan. For those of us who aren't, then the movie itself was ok, despite Pa Kent being portrayed as the worst father ever.

I personally liked the movie..even with what Superman did at the end. I wonder if that ending will build into the Superman vs Batman movie...

A group of people are trapped in an elevator and the Devil is mysteriously amongst them.

Another one of those movies that scream "Camp" at you when you see the trailers, but turn out to be better than you expected. This was a very different movie (and anyone who knows me knows that I will always gives props when guys think outside the box)  and I found that refreshing.

It became a little predictable once certain people got killed off, but I liked it. Definitely worth the time spent watching it.

Redemption: Jason Statham, not bad, fairly straight forward, interesting character development, nice anti-hero flick.

Killing Season: De Niro, Travolta, dark, violent journey through the depths of humanity. Panned by critics, but I think they're wrong.

The running joke with Statham is that most of his movies are only 1 word because his fans can't remember much more than that.

That being said he does have a couple good movies in the resume.

Thanks for this.  I recently added both those movies to my Netflix que, but honestly don't know when I'd ever watch them.  I'll probably check 'em both out now in the next week or so LOL.

lol at the Pa Kent comment.

I'm thinking it will have more to do with the amount of damage caused by Supes and Zod completely leveling the city. That will be the reason for billionaire Bruce Wayne to publicly get involved while Batman learns more about this new threat/ally behind the scenes.

But I loved Man of Steel even though it had some flaws.

--------

Had some wine and sat in front of the Christmas tree late the other night and watched Casablanca with the wife. She had never seen it before but it's one of my favorites.

Classic movie, still great to this day.
