Johnson suffers extensive neck injuries LOS ANGELES -- Southern California tailback Stafon Johnson is unlikely to play again this season after a falling weight bar crushed his neck and larynx. The senior who scored the No. 7 Trojans' go-ahead touchdown against Ohio State two weeks ago was bench-pressing when the bar slipped from his right hand and fell onto his throat. A few months ago, Jeremiah Masoli was a Heisman Trophy candidate and the quarterback of a national title contender. But he blew it. Times two, writes ESPN.com's Ted Miller. Blog Johnson was in critical but stable condition late Monday night after more than seven hours of surgery, said Katreena Salgado, a spokeswoman for California Hospital Medical Center. He was treated for crushing injuries to his neck as well as severe injuries to his larynx, said the hospital's trauma medical director, Dr. Gudata Hinika. Stan Johnson, the player's father, told ESPN's Shelley Smith that his son needed a tracheotomy to enable him to breathe. According to the Los Angeles Times, a source close to the family said surgeons worked to realign Johnson's larynx in hopes he will be able to use his voice. WhoRUSupposed2Be
Good God... that is certainly not something I'd wish on anyone and it hurts just visualizing it. But, I'm glad to see him given an opportunity.
Champskins
i remember that dude... thats a scary accident. The doctors said he would have died if he wasnt in such good physical shape and condition at the time. Glad to see him getting chances.
HailB&G
He was very highly rated before the accident. It really has cost him a couple of years. He'll only be 24 come next offseason. No risk signing with some potential there.

terpskins10
Can't ever hurt to have someone who has faced such adversity in the locker room. At the least, he can provide some perspective to some of our roster's knuckleheads.

TheCoach22
I am shocked that Pete Carrol didn't sign him at any point since he left USC, especially with such a bare cupboard minus Lynch. To be honest, the dude was a best at USC and his story is remarkable. I was rooting for him to make a comeback and would love for him to someday have a role with my team. Good luck Stafon! HTTR! Champskins
Who was he with before we picked him up? I am also shocked that Carrol didn't pick him up but I heard he was a very good back especially if he played at USC. They always have good RB's. Doesn't hurt to give him a look during practice. Forehead
I always wondered about this kid's potential, but he never got to carry a full load because USC always had so many running backs. He had to split time with Joe McKnight and Marc Tyler if I remember right.
Spunkush
Cool pick up, he should be around in camp next year, It would be cool If he turns out to be a beast

greenspandan
man, shannahan really does have a nose for running backs, doesn't he? i hope his neck/spine are fully healed and healthy. not hard to imagine his neck being permanently weakened from such an accident. paloosa
He replaced Aldrick on the Practice squad who replaced the recently released Ryan Torain on the roster. Stafon Johnson was with the Titans so it is a good pick up to see if he can crack the roster spot from Hightower, Helu and Royster.

I thought the same thing when I heard about it last year. That's a gruesome injury to recover from.
shuler74
Former 5 star running back, and everyone in the country wanted him. Hopefully he can make the team next year.
TheLongshot
looks like he's been out since preseason with a dislocated ankle. We are basically taking out a flyer on him.
DogofWar1
The guy clearly had great potential, perhaps he still has a starter in him. Shanahan has a pretty good batting average when QBs aren't involved (this only applies to the Skins), so who knows what this guy's ceiling is. BLEED-B&G
How many active running back are we going to carry next year? 3.... It's getting hard to get excited about RBs playing for Shanahan, you could be gone as quick as you came. Torain looked like he was going to be good after last year. Gone. I'm starting to think Hightower is going to be a similar story next year. We'll see what Johnson has in preseason, if he makes it that far. Dukes and Skins
Will be interesting to see what he has as a RB for us. If healthy he could be a pleasant surprise for us
TheREALJBird
He was a good RB at USC, hoping he can make some noise for us next year and crack the roster.
Gurgeh
I'd take it as a sign we're relatively happy with Hightower, Helu and Royster, and we're not going to draft another RB. The issue we have with our RBs is durability. Before the season began there was a question whether Hightower could take a bigger workload, and he got worn down and then injured. Helu started to get a lot of carries, then he got worn down and injured too. Having another back waiting in the wings seems prudent.
