The Diablo III Thread

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure how many ESers played Diablo II. But needless to say, it revolutionized the "hack-n-slash" genre and inspired hundreds of games since. Some of my favorites:

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 + 2

Champions of Norrath and Champions: Return to Arms

Dungeon Siege Series

Sacred 1 + 2

Titan Quest

Torchlight

etc.

Anyways, Diablo III, the game we've all been waiting for for a friggin DECADE, should be released some time this spring/summer, though nobody can say for sure, as Blizzard's got a nice "It'll be done when its done" stance on the topic. But leaked product plans from Blizzard that may or may not be real are pointing towards early-mid 2011 for the release date.

But more importantly, every day seems to bring new information on what's looking to be a downright AWESOME game. So I figured I'd start a Tailgate thread where all of the Diablo II nerds and other gamers who are interested could discuss the new game. Graphics, classes, game design, changes from Diablo II...everything. This game is gonna be huge, and is incredibly anticipated by those who loved Diablo II.

Some sites for everyone:

The official Diablo III site: http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/

The Character Classes (which have all been revealed): http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/characters/

The Battle.net Diablo III Forum: http://forums.battle.net/board.html?forumId=12007&sid=3000

^^^

Posters with blue text are official Blizzard employees who visit the site and answer questions about the development, etc.

------------------------------------------------

The original team who made Diablo II is gone and doing their own thing, so there are definitely some controversies involved in the new game. Things like more colorful graphics (an improvement, in my opinion...its not gonna look like WOW. Love the screenshots I've seen so far), and other changes to the game.

I was skeptical at first because of this, but everything I've seen, and the explanations from the developers, seem A-Okay and pretty damn awesome, to me.

Some big changes, for those who don't know:

Well, the graphics are obvious. I think its an improvement, and the spell effects, etc., look amazing. Not cartoonish, to me. It also uses a physics engine that allows you to do things like use the environment, and even bounce things off of walls and around corners, etc.

Screenshots: http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/media/screenshots.xml#136

The Health system is different: http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/world/systems/health.xml

Gold will actually play an important part in the player economy and single player experience as well. Its harder to obtain, meaning it won't be an "inflated" currency. And because you receive less of it for selling items, there will be more incentive to break down your unneeded/unwanted items to get components for crafting. See the next paragraph.

Along with that, salvaging items for their base components, and more rare components from better items, with be HUGE. You gather an entourage of artisans which craft and customize your most powerful items. This doesn't take away from the looting portion of the game: Its still the "point" of Diablo III to kill, kill, kill, collect, upgrade, sell, etc. Some info on the artisans and crafting: http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/world/systems/crafting.xml

PvP will be a component of the game, but they will not be balancing the skills in the game (thus ruining the core Diablo III experience) specifically for this. Info: http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/world/systems/pvp.xml

The five new classes (with male and female versions of each, although they aren't all out yet) are:

Demon Hunter: http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/characters/demonhunter.xml

Monk: http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/characters/monk.xml

Wizard: http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/characters/wizard.xml

Witch Doctor: http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/characters/witchdoctor.xml

Barbarian (returning from Diablo II): http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/characters/barbarian.xml

Trailers for some of the classes:

Demon Hunter: http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/media/movies/demonhunter.xml

Monk: http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/media/movies/monk.xml

Wizard: http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/media/movies/wizard.xml

Gameplay Trailer: http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/index.xml (click the correct trailer button)

Original Teaser Trailer: http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/index.xml (^^^ Ditto)

Enjoy everyone! I'm sure as the game gets closer and closer, and actually comes out, this thread will be very active. But for now, we can discuss the new changes from Diablo II, what we're looking forward to, new info, etc. I'll update this OP with new info as it comes out.

This is definitely my most anticipated game of 2010-11, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Yeah, I'm one of the people who still plays D2 while waiting for D3 to come out. I got into D2 in college (Freshman year, '03) and have been playing ever since. Got a buddy who plays too and we've been waiting for a year since it was first official. We lauged back in spring when the announced a release date of December 31st of this year. But if they do it right, I'm ok with them taking their time. The screen shots and demos on the website are very impressive. Not sure how I feel about the whole "health/magic orbs after a kill" in place of potions, but I'm interested in the crafting and hoarding aspect of the game.

And I want to play as the witchdoctor for the zombie wall. That's what I'm looking forward to the most. I don't care if that makes me a bad player, I do what I want!

Lol, I was playing Diablo II when I was like 15. Diablo III still not out is just a level below the whole Duke Nukem fiasco.

Yeah, there was an issue where the team from Diablo II got fired, I'm pretty sure. Setting it back. And of course Blizzard has other big fish to fry, like WoW, and Starcraft II, which also took like a decade to come out.

But the recent "delays" have just been to make the game what it HAS to be to live up to the hype: hopefully, damn near perfect.

Totally agreed. I'm watching the gameplay demo with the barbarian now, and its voiced over by a developer talking about whats going on, and its awesome.

Yeah, I was skeptical too. I think part of the point is to prevent the potion-spamming that goes on in DII. Kill some stuff, back out of battle, chug potions, go back. This is meant to change that, making you have to go farther FORWARD to get that health and stay alive, which adds other elements of strategy. Is it worth the risk to kill that bigger creature to get the bigger health orb and restore yourself fully, even while surrounded by minions? Or do you pick off the minions while avoiding the larger creatures to slowly, more safely (maybe) increase your health.

I like it, from what I've seen.

River of flame.

Whirlwind through the whole level.

Find Stones of Jordan.

Sell on ebay.

For like a year straight. Over and over and over. :D

:ols: How much did you make?

Also, **** the ES search feature, I advanced searched EVERY possible iteration of Diablo, Diablo II (2) and III (3), etc., and came up with NOTHING other than an old Warcraft III thread.

And now in the similar threads area below, I see there are already at least two threads, one the "Official" one, on Diablo III.

Oh well, at least I put a lot of effort into my OP, and they never got much conversation going, so missing them isn't TOO lame.

But shoot!

Plus those are all from '08, which also highlights how long this game has been announced to come out. I figured 2 years is long enough to start a new thread, so you should be in the clear. Hopefully.

Yeah, I should be fine I think. Now we've got all the info from those threads, and the new stuff, all in one place.

I give permission to start this new thread.

However, I will not hold my breath on a early 2011 release :)

Thanks haha, I saw that you were the starter of the official one.

And yeah, me neither. It would be great, but I'm not going to even hope.

Played Diablo 3 Blizzcon...it was WELL worth the wait to play for only 20 minutes at a time. The Demon Hunter is a money class

Ohh you lucky ****!

And that's good to know, that's probably my first class

Can't wait to see what the male version looks like!

I never played Diablo 2, which is sad because I have the game (Diablo Warchest). I've played the original and was never able to beat it.

If that includes the Lord of Destruction expansion for D2, I highly encourage you to give it a shot some day you've got free time. 7 classes to choose from (each with thousands of variations in which skill paths to take), 5 worlds, and all 3 big bosses: Mephisto, Diablo, and Baal. It's addicting and time-consuming, but on a long weekend it can be a lot of fun to experiment and see which paths work for you and which ones don't. And it might help if you plan to play D3.

Well, I don't need to explore too many classes. Any time I play these sorts of games, whether it's Neverwinter Nights, or Dragon Age, or anything where you get a choice, I always pick the hack and slash fighter/warrior/monk sorts. I don't screw around with magic too much, rotating spells or running out of spells or whatever is a pain in the ass, I'd rather cause sharp-edged carnage.

Which may be why I could never beat the original Diablo. I got to the last section of levels (but not the very last one) and just can't manage to get past the monsters down there.

Blizzard digital downloads can install the game as of 11 AM EST, IE: Right now. They can't play it, though, until 12:01 AM PDT tomorrow. Which means for us ESTers it goes live at 3AM.

I digital downloaded. I'll install when I'm home at 6 tonight.

I beat the first Diablo with a warrior. The main things you have to manage are healing potions and being careful not to pull big mobs. I also used town portals a lot. I would try to pick a few monsters off, while popping potions like crazy, then use a town portal to save my game and get more potions. Then I would go back to the floor I was at (by using the portal I made) and pick off more monsters. Rinse and repeat. On some floors, I would pull a some monsters near the stairs, so if I was getting overwhelmed, I could leave that floor. If you go into a room with a lot of monsters and try to take on the whole mob at once you will die.

I'm amped up. I got a feeling Imperius is not who we think he is. I think he's in cahoots with Diablo. (No, I haven't read any spoilers, so if this turns out to be true, I'm just a genius)

Here's a sweet pre-Sanctuary battle between the Angels and Demons

Tyrael is bad ass, by the way.
