The problem with this team isn't going to be the starting five if they stay healthy. Gortat will be good and Beal will improve throughout the season so no worries about one game.

Now, ignoring the fact that the roster is so poorly put together with a lot of SFs, the real problems are that the bench is terrible and the coaching staff has never shown the ability to develop anyone. There is some serious overvaluing of players on this teams bench.

Back up PG Maynor isn't an upgrade from last year and can't shoot.

Back up SG Temple shoots under 40% and is on his 6th team in 5 years. If Glen Rice Jr can actually play SG versus SF, I have no idea why he isn't the one getting minutes immediately.

Back up SF Webster is easily the best player on the bench and a good rotation player. This is where the construction of this team really hurts. What happens when Porter comes back? How can the team justify giving Webster the contract he got given the number of SFs on the team and lack of depth everywhere else and than cut his minutes? Ariza is unlikely to be traded so now it's up to a poor head coach to figure out a rotation.

Back up PF: Harrington, a 15 year vet who is coming off major surgery. If he can get back to close to his old form he will be solid offensively, but not sure if he plays any defense.

Back up C: Seraphin. Could be a solid rotation player, but not if he is given 4 minutes a night.

Vesley shouldn't even be on a NBA roster and Booker just didn't pan out.

Just saw the post about Nene being injured. If Nene or Gortat miss an extended amount of time, bye bye playoffs.

Welp, that didn't take long...

Nene injury: Wizards' center hurts calf in loss to Pistons

Dude is as soft as some baby poo.  I'm not there (yet)...but at some point I am going to question his commitment to basketball.

he a Brazilian who got paid a lot. They usually check out around 29/30.

Just counting down the days until he is off the books.

Still on the books for the next 3 seasons...SMH.  It's gonna be a while.

Yeah they're pretty dominant.  Memphis is probably the best though.

Drummond is what you'd expect for a super raw 20 year old big.  He's going to take himself out of games from fouls for the next few years and he can't create his own offense.  Still an impactful physical presence no matter what.

Smith looked good for most of the night.  Showed nice passing ability and meshed well with Drummond.  He will always make dumbass plays but he's generally positive.

But I wonder if Monroe doesn't play better when Drummond is out of the game and he gets to play the 5.  Last year Monroe didn't play well with Drummond, and last night he seemed to come alive and dominate the game when Drummond went out.  I think it makes sense to set the minutes up so that Smith plays mostly PF and you're swapping Monroe and Drummond at C and keep one of them in the game at all times.

Beal will bounce back.  He was a stud in preseason and he just needs to get himself into the flow of things.

As absent as he was, Beal's jumper was still there last night.  That's encouraging.  He still scored 17 points just making his shots.

Randy needs to manage his minutes better than he did last night, he left him sitting on the bench far too long.

I'm not too concerned about last night.  Wall/Beal will be better.  Like I was saying before, Nene's play was really troubling.  As a matter of fact, there was talk about him being out of shape earlier in training camp.  He got paid and is now content.

You're overestimating Asik's value IMO.  He's not as good a player as Gortat.  Gortat is a legitimately good and skilled offensive player whereas Asik is just a low usage 5th option type, good for catching the ball at the basket and finishing.  He's a defense and rebounding specialist.  Trading Beal for Asik would be a crazy overpayment.

And whatever BS they're shoveling in public, Houston is going to want to deal both Asik and Lin.  They need to in order to get a third big contract, and those two are scheduled to make 15 million each next season.  They aren't going to want to pay that.  Who would?  Asik isn't a great fit playing beside Dwight, and Asik himself said this.  He wants a big role.  It all adds up to Houston dealing him by this summer, probably before the deadline.  They can be somewhat picky about what they get in return since Asik is a good player.  But not that picky.

Asik vs Gortat is an interesting topic.  They both set screens/picks well, they're both good finishers near the basket, they both rebound well.  I would give a tentative nod in offensive rebounding to Asik, but it's too early to tell really.  Pheonix's system has their bigs in different spots, and Asik was basically the only guy really trying to get o-boards in Houston last year.  So it's a wait and see for Gortat in DC, and the Asik+Dwight pairing in Houston.

Pro's for Asik, 2 and a half years younger.  Better help defender.

Pro's for Gortat, he can hit a 12 foot shot.  Better ball security.

Not sure why you want them to trade Lin.  And Lin/Asik don't make 15 million each, they make 8.4 million each.  Patrick Beverly started last night, but Lin was the one getting 30+ minutes.  The Rockets have a happy roster dilemma right now, these issues won't hurt them in the regular season.  Maybe in the playoffs, but that's only against a few western conference teams, like the Warriors.

Gortat is a far better offensive player insofar as he has an offensive game that goes beyond catching the ball at the rim and dunking it or laying it in.  Gortat has a post game and he can shoot.

Lin and Asik make 15 million each next season.  Their cap hit is only for around 8 million because of an obscure RFA rule that lets teams poison pill RFAs by signing players to different cap structures than the original team can.  But they each make 15 million in real dollars because of the way their contracts were structured.

I don't want Lin from them.  I was just saying that they need to trade him to clear room for another big contract.  No reason to waste 8 million in cap space on a backup PG.  Certainly no reason to pay your backup PG 15 million next year.

They're probably a contender with the roster as is.  But spending so much money for two guys who don't really fit into their plans any more means they need to make a deal.  They are very close to having room for a third max contract.  Think about that team if they found a way to get say, Carmelo Anthony.  They could be the title favorite.

Lin isnt all that bad. He is just a little streaky with his shot. His defense isnt all that great, but with Asik and Howard back there it doesnt matter much. He is pretty good at driving and passing. I think hes a pretty decent fit for the team as is.

Actually incredibly believable. Missed time to nagging injuries all three seasons he's played here. played 82 games once, now in his 13th season in the league. Ernie and Ted knew this when making the trade

Actually it's his 11th season, drafted in 2002 and a rookie in 2002-2003.

He's 31 and has three major injuries in his history: acl injury from several years ago, cancer scare, and plantar fasciitis from last year which led to knee tendonitis.

But aside from the cancer scare and the ACL injury, he didn't really miss much time in his other years in Denver.  He's missing more time here and playing fewer minutes.  I think it's yet another indictment of our medical staff, letting injuries go untreated and turning into other injuries.

Nene has a rugged style and he's going to take falls and bad landings and get hurt.  We're especially poorly equipped to deal with his health IMO.  We've got systemic injury issues for a reason.

Wittman is an idiot. Just look at what he's done with Webster after the guy has a career year and the team pays him. Change his role entirely and ask him to create his own shot.

If we do anything at all this year, it will be in spite of Wittman, and he will be rewarded with an extension.

Beal struggling out there, doesn't seem that relaxed yet.
