Dozens of ancient shipwrecks found accidentally during Black Sea mapping

Dozens of shipwrecks, the first of their kind seen from bygone empires, have been a "complete bonus" discovery for researchers mapping the Black Sea.

The international team of scientists came across more than 40 wrecks while surveying the seabed near Bulgaria to understand how quickly land in the area was inundated following the last ice age 20,000 years ago.

"The wrecks are a complete bonus, but a fascinating discovery, found during the course of our extensive geophysical surveys," Professor Jon Adams, lead investigator on the Black Sea Maritime Archaeology Project, said.

The centuries-old wrecks, including ships from the Byzantine and Ottoman empires, provide the first view of vessels previously known only through historical sources.

Most other wrecks from these time periods have decomposed due to having sunk in shallower waters.

But the Black Sea discoveries can be seen with their upper decks still intact, with some ships' masts still standing and rigging in place.

Professor Adams said these wrecks were "astonishingly preserved" due to the lack of oxygen in the Black Sea below 150 metres.

Some wrecks found, including this one, were from the Ottoman Empire.

Very cool story about one (maybe 2) Cubs fans and how they enjoyed the Game 7 of the WS

Keeping promise, man listens to Cubs win at dad's grave site

3:08 PM ET
  • Associated Press

GREENWOOD, Ind. -- A North Carolina man drove to his father's grave site in Indiana to listen to the Chicago Cubs win Game 7 of the World Series, keeping a pledge the men made to each other.

Wayne Williams listened to the Cubs' 10-inning 8-7 victory over the Cleveland Indians on his smartphone Wednesday night at his father's grave in the military section of Greenwood Forest Lawn Cemetery in suburban Indianapolis.

My favorite story of the day! He kept a promise to dad. They listened to the #Cubs win the #WorldSeries together. http://now.wthr.com/2fGswHs

His father, also named Wayne Williams, was a Navy veteran. He died in 1980 at age 53.

The younger Williams told WTHR-TV he and his father had a pact: When the Cubs got into the World Series again, they would listen to the games together.

He kept his promise, sitting in a fold-out chair draped with a Cubs "W" victory flag.

Apack of arctic wolves approached workers in a remote part of northernCanada, and every second was caught on camera.

Footage captured in the northern-most part of Nunavut shows three wild wolves inspecting a work yard before ambling over to a group of men and sniffing them.

The filmer said the three animals are from a pack of seven that live locally.

Just when I thought there was no good news to read, along come these great people:

Neighbors give special needs boy who was hospitalized a 'Halloween do-over'

David Dakake wasn’t able to go trick-or-treating Monday because he was hospitalized, but he was still able to partake in the holiday’s festivities. That’s all thanks to dozens of strangers and neighbors who rallied to throw the 12-year-old special needs boy a “Halloween do-over” on Wednesday, after David was discharged, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

David’s mother, Leann Dakake, of Paulding County, Georgia, said her son was heartbroken when she told him he’d have to miss Halloween. The Dakakes adopted David from Latvia in 2007 when he was a toddler. David was born premature, and suffers from deafness and a mild form of cerebral palsy, which affects his movement, the news station reported. These needs sometimes require extra care.

Moved by her son’s reaction, Leann shared news of their predicament on social media and reached out to a neighbor.

Although the Dakakes only moved to their new neighborhood of Seven Hills a few days ago, Leann said the outpouring of support was overwhelming, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Dozens of neighbors agreed to open their doors with candy for David. Next, another person proposed a trunk-or-treat idea, which the community organized Tuesday.

Pit Bull Who Was Paralyzed Learns To Swim Instead

....

Since starting therapy, he has shown remarkable progress and signs of movement in his back limbs during tail stimulation. "With damage to the spine and paraplegics," Jennifer Hall, a therapist at Water4Dogs, told The Dodo, "getting the nerves and the brain to communicate is a big deal."

The Water4Dogs team is hopeful that, with continued therapy, Eddie Milo may regain use of his back legs someday. This hope is supported by the story of a small dog named Max. Neurologists referred Max to Water4Dogs after he was attacked by another dog, according to therapist Ashley Garcia. He suffered a spinal injury that caused tetraparesis (paralysis of all limbs), but through rehabilitation is now able to walk again.

Father And Son Were Out Fishing When Suddenly — Mountain Lions

On Sunday, Kevin Alexander and his son Blake learned just that. While out enjoying a day of fishing on Lake Shasta, in California, the pair came to the sudden realization they were not alone on the water (or necessarily at the top of the food chain).

As the pair looked on in amazement, two large mountain lions passed by their boat — close enough for Kevin to tell Blake to get back. Lucky for us, he still managed to capture video proof of the incredible encounter.

Timelapse

Timelapse is a global, zoomable video that lets you see how the Earth has changed over the past 32 years. It is made from 33 cloud-free annual mosaics, one for each year from 1984 to 2016, which are made interactively explorable by Carnegie Mellon University CREATE Lab's Time Machine library, a technology for creating and viewing zoomable and pannable timelapses over space and time.

http://www.onegreenplanet.org/news/moment-shelter-dogs-experience-warm-beds/

Every year, six to eight million animals enter U.S. shelters, but only three to four million get adopted. Life in an animal shelter can be understandably terrifying for dogs as their days are filled with loud shelter noises, strange people constantly walking by, and no human to snuggle up with in bed.

When YouTube celebrity Stuart Edge went to volunteer at his local animal shelter for the first time, he realized first hand just how depressing a shelter can truly be. So he decided to do something about it. How could he instantly help all of the wonderful dogs he just met at the animal shelter? Dog beds! He left the shelter and went straight to the store.

Together with a group of friends, Stuart took the dogs out for some fresh air and a nice long walk before bringing them back to surprise them with their new beds. As you can see from the above video, their reaction is priceless. The dogs instantly climbed into their plush, warm beds, and cozy up for naps.

If you feel inspired after watching this video, you can make a difference in the lives of homeless animals simply by volunteering. Organizations rely heavily on volunteers to assist with animal care and day-to-day operations. There’s never a shortage of things to do and opportunities are available for people of every skill set. You can help take dogs for walks, give them food and water, and make sure their area is clean. If your preference is helping out behind the scenes, you can volunteer your services by assisting with fundraisers, outreach events or general office tasks. And please, always adopt and never shop!

I have 3 adopted dogs myself and they are great dogs.  AS they say, if you want a dog, take a trip to a shelter or look up 'rescue dogs' if you have a more specific breed that you like.  Nothing as cool as rescuing a dog.

https://www.dailystar.com.lb/Life/SciandTech/2016/Dec-13/385200-six-story-high-wave-sets-a-record-says-un-agency.ashx

Agence France Presse

GENEVA: The U.N.'s weather agency Tuesday announced the highest wave on record – a behemoth that towered 19 meters (62.3 feet) above the North Atlantic.

Scrutiny of data sent back by an automated buoy showed a monster wave rose at 0600 GMT on February 4, 2013 at a remote spot between Britain and Iceland, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said.

"This is the first time we have ever measured a wave of 19 meters. It is a remarkable record," WMO deputy chief Wenjian Zhang said in a statement.

Taller than a six-storey building, the mighty wave occurred after a "very strong" cold front had barreled through the area, producing winds up of 43.8 knots (81 kilometers, 50.4 miles per hour).

The previous record height for a wave was 18.3m, notched up in December 2007, also in the North Atlantic.<rest at link>

Really good that no ships were in that area.  Just think what it would look like - seeing a wave taller than many hotels - coming at you.  Scary.

Note:  This was not a 'Rogue Wave' that have been measured via satellite to be 100 feet tall.

This commercial is fantastic.

A student did it and I guess adidas has ignored it or decided not to use it.

Where did you find that?  It is fantastic.  The person (or people) who wrote it should be working for a good marketing group ASAP.
