Best Song Opening Lines?

Thinking Skins

Recommended Posts

So for about the past week or so, I've had this great song in my head, "With a Little Help From My Friends". I just can't stop singing those first 2 lines. Its just a great opening to me.

And sitting here bored in my office, got me wondering what some of the other great song openings are? Any suggestions?

Some times I feel,

like I am drunk behind the wheel,

the wheel of possibilities,

however it may roll.

Give it a spin,

see if you can somehow factor in,

you know there's always more then one way,

to say exactly what you mean to say.

Out of My Head- Fastball

one last one...Judy Colllins - Both Sides Now (written by Joni Mitchell)

"Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air

And feather canyons everywhere, i've looked at clouds that way."

though one could argue the entire song is a lyrical masterpiece.

Dearly beloved

We are gathered here today

2 get through this thing called life

Electric word life

It means forever and that's a mighty long time

But I'm here 2 tell u

There's something else

The afterworld

A world of never ending happiness

U can always see the sun, day or night

So when u call up that shrink in Beverly Hills

U know the one - Dr Everything'll Be Alright

Instead of asking him how much of your time is left

Ask him how much of your mind, baby

'Cuz in this life

Things are much harder than in the afterworld

In this life

You're on your own

And if de-elevator tries 2 bring u down

Go crazy - punch a higher floor

Ev’rybody’s building the big ships and the boats,

Some are building monuments,

Others, jotting down notes,

Ev’rybody’s in despair,

Ev’ry girl and boy

But when Quinn the Eskimo gets here,

Ev’rybody’s gonna jump for joy.

"The Might Quinn"

I'm not as impressed by lines that sound like poetry as I am by lines that just kickstart a song.

Beatles - I Saw Her Standing There

"Well she was just seventeen, you know what I mean..."

No, I actually don't know what you mean, but it's a GREAT way to start a song.

Or some of the great protest songs.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Ohio

"Tin soldiers and Nixon coming

We're finally on our own

This summer I hear the drumming

Four dead in Ohio

That just blows the song into gear

then you probably like what I consider the most inane opening line in rock and roll history:

She was a fast machine, she kept her motor clean, she was the best damn woman that I've ever seen.

A passage to Bangkok by Rush

Our first stop is in Bogota

To check Colombian fields

The natives smile and pass along

A sample of their yield

Sweet Jamaican pipe dreams

Golden Acapulco nights

Then Morocco, and the East,

Fly by morning light

We're on the train to Bangkok

Aboard the Thailand Express

We'll hit the stops along the way

We only stop for the best

Wreathed in smoke in Lebanon

We burn the midnight oil

The fragrance of Afghanistan

Rewards a long day's toil

Pulling into Katmandu

Smoke rings fill the air

Perfumed by a Nepal night

The Express gets you there

We're on the train to Bangkok

Aboard the Thailand Express

We'll hit the stops along the way

We only stop for the best

We're on the train to Bangkok

Aboard the Thailand Express

We'll hit the stops along the way

We only stop for the best

Yes,We're on the train to Bangkok

Aboard the Thailand Express

We'll hit the stops along the way

We only stop for the best
