Best Song Opening Lines?

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light

What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming

Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight

O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming

And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air

Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there

Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave

O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave

Well, it does start out with the greatest opening riff in rock n roll history......

Deep down Louisiana close to New Orleans

Way back up in the woods among the evergreens

There stood a log cabin made of earth and wood

Where lived a country boy named Johnny B. Goode

Who never ever learned to read or write so well

But he could play the guitar just like a ringing a bell......

One more by Chuck:

Ridin' along in my automobile

My baby beside me at the wheel

I stole a kiss at the turn of a mile

My curiosity runnin' wild

Cruisin' and playin' the radio

With no particular place to go.

That one right there is a good one for sure Capi.

Dylan knew how to start a song.

Someone's got it in for me/They're planting stories in the press

With your mercury mouth in the missionary times

They're selling postcards of the hanging

They're painting the passports brown

The beauty parlor is filled with sailors

The circus is in town

Oh God said to Abraham' date=' “Kill me a son”

Abe says, “Man, you must be puttin’ me on”[/quote']

I was in another lifetime, one of toil and blood.

When blackness was a virtue and the road was full of mud.

I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form.

"Come in," she said

"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

It may have already been posted but here goes:

The Mob Goes Wild - Clutch

Please allow me to adjust my pants

So that I may dance the good time dance

And put the onlookers and innocent bystanders into a trance

If My words did glow,

with the gold of sunshine

and my tunes were played on the harp unstrung,

would you hear my voice

come through the music?

Would you hold it near,

as it were your own?

I was tokin on a number

and diggin on the radio"

Clutch have many great opening lines. A couple of my favorites-

Tin shacks and catfish bones

have been about all I’ve ever known.

The junebugs rattle and roll

around the old maypole

And also-

I know we came here to get our good times on,

Hold the whole world in our hand and greet the dawn with open arms.

So make a contribution if you have been amused

But before we depart my brothers and sisters I have some heavy news

And lastly-

Back again with a quickness, pick it up, pick it up.

Master arithmeticness, light it up, light it up.

I got the heat in both feets, snake handler’s hands.

Come back with slickness and do it all again

Didn't read every post, but it's somewhat obscure anyways so I doubt it was posted:

"Well, a hammer fell down on a 44 primer and there's one less problem in South Carolina tonight."

one last one...Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now (Judy Collins was a hack)

"Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air

And feather canyons everywhere, i've looked at clouds that way."

though one could argue the entire song is a lyrical masterpiece.

"Livin' on the road my friend, is gonna keep you free and clean

And now you wear your skin like iron, and your breath is hard as kerosene

Weren't you mamma's only boy-oy, her favourite one it seems

She began to cry when you said, good-bye, sank to your dream"

Townes Van Zandt - Pancho and Lefty

"Sweetness, sweetness I was only joking when I said I'd like to smash every tooth In your head."

Think that's the first time i've ever heard her described as a "hack", but to each their own. Joni wrote the song and did a beautiful job recording it as well...Judy's voice (and Rifkin's arrangements) took it to heights no one else could, imo.

Anyway, the thread's about best opening lines, so here's another one i thought of:

U2 - Bullet the Blue Sky

"In the howlin' wind, comes a stingin' rain. See it drivin' nails into the souls on the tree of pain."
