Die Hard
Well Canadian women drink Coors Light, its endearing to American Males. :pfft: In Canada, Coors Light is the official "woman's drink" -- alcohol content being so low. So I found it very appropriate Is it not the same in the US?
Bostic Hog
Hey Leonsis said were it the Russians, he would have to root for them. How the world has changed since "The Miracle on Ice". DjTj
I know- they're much worse. Socialized medicine, anti- American sentiment, and they burned down the white house. Seriously, the Commies never attacked the White House. Canada is clearly our greatest enemy. Canadians are also secretly rooting for global warming. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,282615,00.html they keep sending us their lumber and oil, we'll keep not just invading themIf they don't pipe down, we might have to march up there and burn down their log cabin or igloo or whatever the President of Canada lives in. Springfield
Yeah, more Americans should be humble like this guy. To be honest. That guy seems like a bit of a douche. Hey Leonsis said were it the Russians, he would have to root for them. How the world has changed since "The Miracle on Ice". If it were Russia vs. USA, I'm with USA all the way. If it were Russia vs. Canada, I'd be with Russia. Mainly because I don't have any allegiance to either Russia or Canada but all my favorite players play for Russia. Capt Rich Fla
I think it's fair to say that this thread has spread misinformation from both sides of the border. It's sad to see, really. As Americans, we should be happy for Canada. We should support them in their victories, even if it were against our own. Many of us were happy for Canada's good fortune. The discouraging thing to see how Canadians revel in Amercian loses.

I'd wager that if you ask Canadians... in a men's olympic hockey final between the USA and Russia... who would you root for to win? I'd wager it would be a HUGE majority in favor of the USA. I don't know if anyone would watch it but....

darklight1216
FYI, the game is over. And it really was only a game. It's not like they're the former USSR or anything. It's Canada .... they drink moosehead and say Eh to everything. They're harmless. Why the anger? Because that's how games are. I don't care what country they're from. If they play my team; I want them to be humiliated. You know, zoony was saying before, at least it wasn't Russia. When I first read it, I thought it was stupid for him to say that. But when I think about it, I'd rather lose to Canada (with Crosby, ugh) than Russia (with Ovechkin, Semin and Varlamov). I say that because of the history. Russia isn't a good country, they were socialist and now they are just corrupt. On the world stage, I'd rather lose to our nice neighbors to the north than our former enemies at war. Many people in the USA died because of the Russians. In NFL terms, it's like the Redskins going to St. Louis and losing in their stadium as opposed to the Redskins going to Dallas and losing in their stadium... I guess. As a Caps fan, I have mixed feelings on the Russian players subject. I love OV, Semin, Varly, Federov and the bunch. I generally hate Canadian players (Crosby, Getzlaf, Richards come to mind). PS: Sorry for the stream of the thoughts type post, it's probably not even readable. I think you forgot where you were going at some point in that post. JK j/k So everyone's on the "it's better to lose to them than [insert name]." Cause I'm still on the "we're losers" part. To be honest. That guy seems like a bit of a douche. If it were Russia vs. USA, I'm with USA all the way. If it were Russia vs. Canada, I'd be with Russia. Mainly because I don't have any allegiance to either Russia or Canada but all my favorite players play for Russia. I'm with you. I was supporting USA (obviously)and the Caps. I'd wager it would be a HUGE majority in favor of the USA. I don't know if anyone would watch it but.... I agree 100% I'd bet that most Americans would root for Canada in a Canada/Russia final. There are plenty of Americans who love Crosby and despise Ovechkin. Many Americans, who know hockey, don't really care for the Russian style of hockey ("eurotrash"). No hate towards Canada at all, especially looking back at my previous posts in this thread. I'm a huge Ovechkin and Semin fan though and it would be hard for me to root against them unless they were playing the USA. I'd suspect many Caps fans would have the same perspective. That said, I'd bet the majority of Americans would pull for Canada in a Canada/Russia final.

Springfield
Cause I'm still on the "we're losers" part. It's all good. What a hell of a game to lose though. It's the kind of game where you say, "Wow, that was an awesome game! I wish we could have pulled it out... but wow, that was awesome!" I don't think you could have asked for a better gold medal game, aside from the US winning of course (and the whole Crosby GWG thing).

Die Hard
There are plenty of Americans who love Crosby and despise Ovechkin. Personally, I dislike Ovechkin. I respect him and his ability... and I like that he plays physical. But I also think he's a dirty hockey player (lots of hits from behind). And frankly, he really doesn't have to do that. But I just see him do it too many times.

I don't think I've seen a Canadian yet who likes Ovechkin. I don't really think he's dirty. There are hits from behind that happen in every game, there were plenty of them in the gold medal game from both sides. The knee on knee incidents would be the thing I hear people gripe about the most. Some would say incidental, some would say on purpose. I try to stay out of those arguments myself. I haven't seen any knee-on-knee incidents, to be honest. And I *did* see a lot of hitting from behind hits in the gold medal game.... which I thought were illegal. I guess if it's only into the boards (ie. boarding?) since all those hits seemed to be in open ice. In my mind, that doesn't justify it.... I think they're dirty and should ALL be penalized. Just like football... you don't touch a guy unless you can see his face or earhole.

I wouldn't root for Russia over USA obviously, but over anyone else probably. I just assume that most other Caps fans would think likewise. Hell, you may even find a few Detroit fans pulling for Russia because of all the past success with that team. Also, it's not only about Ovechkin. I like Alexander Semin (put his whole name to prevent a trip to the TOOC thread) a whole lot. I think Semin is a puck handling genius. Kovalchuk is great along with Federov. I'm also rather partial to the Russian style of play. I like the fast paced, stick handling, quick passing based style. That said, the Russian system got worked over in this tournament. Just like football... you don't touch a guy unless you can see his face or earhole. I think that they are trying to cut down on hits to the back. In playoff hockey (or this case Olympic hockey) they'll let a lot of stuff go to keep the flow of the game going. That, to me (and probably others), is what makes playoff hockey so great... it's much more physical. I'm all for keeping hockey as physical as possible, however you do need to try and prevent the hits that can end players careers. It's the same with football to me, I don't like how "tame" it's become. Thus is life though. I'll pull up some Ovechkin knee on knee's for you. Not helping my argument, but I'll try and be as unbiased as possible. From this season. He got suspended because of this hit. From last season's playoffs.
