Has "pedophelia" gone too far?

John Stoessel, in one of his 20/20 specials, investigated the affects of pornography on society. He asked members of religious and family-oriented groups about it. They all said it was a major contributor to rape and other sexual crimes.

Stoessel put up a chart of FBI statistics showing that the reported incidence of rape has gone down by more than 50% since the 70s (actually I think it was higher). Probably the reason it has gone down is a) vastly improved forensics for catching predators, and B) blanket assumption by moms that most men are pedophiles out to abduct their precious young ones.

It is definitely the case with the moms in my extended family. None of the little girls are allowed to play outside alone. The positive outcome is: if everybody is a pre-judged criminal waiting to strike, then the suspicion is likely to deter the less-than-1% who do such things.

Yeah, the likelyhood of being a victim of a sexual crime by a stranger is actually very low, because people are always on their gaurd. I imagine It's when you let your gaurd down with someone you think you can trust that you become vulnerable.

That can be said of many (if not most) crimes.

Thing is you don't just assume every person is a bank robber.

IMO mistertim had no business approaching children that were strangers to him. That's where I think you went wrong. Regardless of how innocent it is you should have made contact with the parents first. I think that the mother over reacted with the name calling and should have come out to say hi, what's up but...

When we first moved into our new home a few years ago a few of the kids started to hang out here. I collect toys, comics, movies and such and I'm pretty cool  so they would stop over to "hang out",...

A short time later I talked it over with my wife that I was really uncomfortable with them just stopping over considering that we hadn't met their folks or anything and we were new to the neighborhood. So we decided to put the brakes on visits until we met their parents. We finally spoke to the parents about this and the weird thing was that the parents didn't seem to think anything of it. :silly: Now we know all their parents and they are all really nice folk and our families hang out and do dinners together but it was still weird in the beginning because you never know how people are going to be...

When my son is old enough to go over to another kids home you can bet that he won't be going over until we meet the parents.

The irony? In ancient Athens when men were often approaching young boys with bad intentions, little was thought of it and people weren't on any guard. Now, few people actually have any ill intent and everyone is on guard.

They said "Beware of Greeks bearing gifts" for a reason yanno.............

What's really interesting about that stat to me is that the social stigma of sexual crimes was so much higher in the '70's. Women were so much likely not to report it because they were too ashamed. Today, it is much easier for a woman to go forward and they are much more supported by the community for their bravery. You would think that factor alone would lead to a higher incidence of rape because women are more likely to admit/report or file charges than they were forty or fifty years ago.

I think registration of sex offenders for life is a big deterrent... Maybe I'm wrong. Some people are just too sick in the soul to make that type of consideration.

I know a girl that was arrested for going down on a guy and arrested for it.

But really ?

Labeled for life because of that ?

Child incidents should certainly be closely monitered and labeled. I went to a Halloween party a couple of years ago and the house was next to a guy that was labeled a sex offender so he was forced to be in his home and we don't even know the details of why.

But to me, I think the opposite. I don't think it stops them. It makes them different criminals.

UPDATE

Today my neighbor was outside and came up and apologized. She said she thought about it and was wrong; she was just being very protective of her kids (which I can understand). I accepted and a huge weight is off of my shoulders.

Hey Mistertim, I'm really glad to hear that :)

I agree with many posters in this thread that she went way, way, way overboard. IMO she should have just come out to talk to you and see what's up. Regardless of the unfounded nature of her attack, I know it would still bother me and I'm sure it bothered you. So I'm really happy to hear she came to her senses and apologized. :)

Now you're in the clear you can offer the kids a ride to the pet store in your white van.

You have possibly the worst user name ever to post in this thread :D
