I've got say that "Love Actually" is a really good chick flick.

That and "When Harry Met Sally" are the very few movies my wife and I agree on.

Otherwise if you walked into our house you could tell who owns what DVD. Hers includes, "When Harry Met Sally", "The 1st Wives Club" and "You've got mail"...among others. Mine include "The Dark Knight", "Smokey & The Bandit --The Special Edition" and all 8 seasons of "Magnum, PI" to name a few.

Someone mentioned Stranger Than Fiction in the Random Thought Thread. I might classify that as a rom-com, and it's an awesome movie.

You think so? I love that movie, but I don't remember the 'romance' element to it. I remember thinking of it as one of the few Will Farrell movies that I liked.

Since it was a female that said it was a romance movie...yeah, it probably is.

And for the record Will is rarely funny. It's ashame how society even spends money on this guy.

I was thinking about what I like about Woody Allen movies, and why I wouldn't call them romantic comedies.

Romantic Comedies have a formula that they absolutely have to adhere to. There is a meet cute. There are obstacles thrown in the way. Something is revealed that would seem to cause the couple from never getting together. In the last ten minutes, obstacles are overcome and our couple rides off into the sunset. At some point, there should be a montage to a Van Morrison song.

You break this formula at your own peril.

Woody Allen's best movies don't follow this formula. I mentioned the Purple Rose of Cairo as one of my favorites. And it is brilliant and wonderful and romantic and whimsical. And the ending may make you want to kill yourself.

Vicki Christina Barcelona is good. There is even something akin to a meet cute in it - though in this case it is a meet-and-ask-two-20-somethings-to-double-team-you cute. But the formual really goes out the window in the Third Act.

Mighty Aphrodite is kind of a romantic comedy, I guess. It doesn't follow any formula though.

Someone mentioned "Love, Actually." I actually liked that movie because it embraced the formula, inverted it, and parodied it all in the same movie. I think it was a little too clever by half at times. And it overly relied on its stars' charm. But it had a lot of charm to rely on. I'm straight and by the end, I just wanted to cuddle with Liam Neeson.

OK, I'm forced to question your taste in movies. Hugh Jackman saved this movie for me and at least made it so I could watch the entire thing, but c'mon, how sappy can it get? I mean really? The girls go from one extreme to the other back to the original and then back. Its not anywhere near the level of Definitely, Maybe or How to lose a guy in 10 days. I wouldn't even call it a romantic comedy. Its more of just a sad romance thats so sad its funny (for guys at least).

Awww, you didn't like it? I didn't like Definitely, Maybe.

As for the whole man card thing, I think it really depends on if the is man centered or woman centered The Princess Bride and Coming to America and There's Something About Mary are mostly about the male characters. You've Got Mail is fairly balanced, though mostly about Meg Ryan's character. Sweet Home Alabama and The Diary of Bridget Jones are all about the female characters.

About a Boy is only a "Romantic Comedy" if you are a pedarist.

Haha, I just figured if a girl made me watch it then it must have been a romantic comedy. Thinking back, I guess it wasn't. It had hugh grant for christ sake

I actually love that movie - though I love the book a lot more. There is a little bit of romance at the end with Rachel Weisz shows up to be hot.

But it's a double "coming of age" film more than anything else.

I mean, the dramatic high point is a grown man and a 12 year old dueting on "Killing Me Softly."

Fever Pitch, for all you baseball lovers

And more recently, The Proposal, which was hilarious by the way...and I have slight man crush on ryan reynolds

Ok, I went and saw the Proposal and enjoyed the heck out of it. So I figured I'd take your advice and watch Fever Pitch. Its decent, but there's one scene when he's in the shower and it kinda ruins the movie for me. Plus I'm not a big fan of Jimmy Fallon or Drew Barrymore. But its a decent watch.

  • 3 weeks later...

I thought this belonged in this thread since here's where it was originally suggested to me.

Alright, Love Actually was decent. Not my favorite Hugh Grant movie. But it kept my attention. Kinda had me thinking a little more than a romantic comedy is supposed to though. There was WAY too much going on at once. But its a decent watch.

If I get any free time this weekend, I'll probably watch Notting Hill. Hopefully its not too cheesy.

Knocked Up

I was hating this movie for a long time (I just couldn't accept that 4 guys had the job of operating a porn site), and Seth Rogan's character just seems to lack pure common sense. But when I actually watched the movie it was pretty enjoyable. Seth's character wasn't as dense as I originally thought and the movie is pretty funny.

Well I should be watching Shaun of the Dead this weekend which is described as a "Romantic Zombie Comedy". Does that count?

Funny that you mention Zombies cause I'm reading the book that True Blood is based on...its a pretty good read, but I kinda see it as a sci-fi romantic comedy. Although the comedy isn't really there, I still laugh at much of the book.
