People in their native state are selfish, stupid, isolated, and aggressive.  Government is the product of social organization and is necessary to create and enforce taboos and compel productive cooperation for very complex societies, and thus provide us with security and economic opportunity.  As our society becomes increasingly complex, our government must become increasingly complex.

Put in strongest terms, for complex modern societies, government is the only way to fight on a systemic level the rampant harmful exploitation that is the product of the greed and aggression that is in our nature.

close enough on the tail side of the coin

What's your problem with brunettes, preacher man?:ols:

Nothing at all! LoL!

Just pointing out a pattern. I find brunettes tend to be bright, intelligent, and insightful on any number of topics.

But then I say the same about blondes and redheads too! (Keeps me out of trouble)

Government must save us from our own selfish nature?

Except the government is made up of people.

Serious question - it sounds like you are clearly big government, which has its advantages.  How does your model differ from socialism?

Get corporate money out of politics and many of our problems are solved.

Lessen what govt choices impact and the money drops.....otherwise they just shift it around to avoid restrictions.

I can live with the reality that under the counter deals will always happen.  When there is a threat of reprisal, which we used to have, the amount and consequences of the deals are obviously less.  That's the best I think we can expect.  Anarchy is cool in theory though.

Government is the product of the social contract people make with the other members of their society where they exchange personal liberty for security and the opportunities and living standards that come from economic complexity.  It is the mechanism of enforcing that contract.  The more complex the society, the more complex its government.  "Big government" is the product of a big society.  The virtue of a government isn't derived from its size, which again, is an arbitrary product of the size and nature of the society it represents.  Determining a government's virtue means rather to determine its ability to promote justice, security, and efficiency.  There will be situations where, security and justice aren't at issue, and a government doesn't promote efficiency as well as private enterprises do.  Private enterprise currently does a better job of sorting out our labor market on an individual level than government would.  Though that may change when we get to a point where our economy becomes efficient enough to make the surpluses in production and services that put the majority of our population out of work.

And there will be situations where the government does it better than private enterprise because the private enterprises cause injustice and insecurity, which really leads to grave inefficiency.  Health care in modern America, for example.  Prison management is another.

I agree with your first sentence, I have no interest at all in clicking that link.

Took me a second to figure out what you were talking about. You mean this "mommy" wagon?
