A day after adding a key piece to their offensive line, the Washington Redskins addressed their need for a pass rusher, taking Mississippi State defensive end/outside linebacker prospect Preston Smith with the 38th pick of the draft.

The 6-foot-4, 271-pound Smith played defensive end at Mississippi State but is expected to convert to outside linebacker in Washington’s 3-4 defense

Teams drafting at the end of the first round and the early second round will have to look at prospects differently. Among the traits that are always at a premium are versatility, size and athleticism. Mississippi State defensive end Preston Smith has all of those traits but one lucky NFL team will probably be able to get him without using a premium pick.

Smith impressed scouts at the Senior Bowlcombine and his pro day, but there has been surprisingly little buzz about the 6’5” 271-pound pass-rusher with 34” arms and 10 5/8” hands. That’s curious at this time of year, unless teams quietly love him.

...

Smith’s various pro comparisons include Antonio Smith, Justin Tuck and Malik Jackson. Teams just want to see him be more explosive off the ball, but he checks every other box you look for in a top end in that mold. From a size perspective, he’s a 'tweener, but you could certainly see him add or lose weight depending on the team that drafts him.

STARKVILLE As a fourth grader Preston Smith envisioned wearing No. 27 like former NFL running back Clinton Portis. He wanted to barrel through NFL defenders and leap into the end zone like his favorite player.

"I felt like I was bigger than most of the kids in my age. They tried to play me at O-Line, but I wanted to play running back," Smith said. "So I was playing running back. I was big like Clinton Portis."

The former Mississippi State Bulldogs' 6-foot-5, 271-pound frame eventually pushed him to the defensive side of the ball, where he found new inspiration.

"Ray Lewis instantly became my favorite player because of his passion for the game and how hard he was playing," Smith said.

Smith's childhood fantasies become reality this weekend with the start of the NFL Draft on Thursday. The Stone Mountain, Georgia native plans to watch the draft on ESPN at 7 p.m. surrounded by more than 20 family members.

The defensive lineman is projected to hear his name called at the end of the first round today or early in the second round on Friday (6 p.m. ESPN 2).

"My stomach's probably going to drop. My heart's probably going to start beating fast. Everybody in my house is probably going to be cheering and screaming," Smith said. "I don't know. It's one of those moments you just can't describe before it happens. When it happens it's going to happen. I might mess around and faint or something."

Smith never doubted his talents. NFL scouts and analysts can't say the same.

Smith carried a late-round grade into his senior season at Mississippi State. In three seasons within the program, Smith started 11 games with 12 tackles for loss and seven sacks.

Last year, he brought something new to the field. The birth of his daughter, Lauren, equipped Smith with extra motivation.

"It drove me more to provide for my daughter and give her everything she wants and needs. Not just what she wants, but everything she needs," Smith said. "Instill hard work in her and show her that I worked hard to get where I'm at."

Lauren was less than a day old when her father earned the Liberty Bowl's Defensive MVP award. The momentum carried into 2014 where Smith eclipsed the totals from his first three seasons.

Welcome to Washington, Mr. Smith.   :)

Really like this pick. He's another high motor guy who's got the production to go along with the potential. Our pass rush is shaping up to be a big upgrade over last year.

And let's not forget the kind of havoc that a 270 lb'er who can run a 4.74 might be able to wreak on special teams.

Just finished watching those highlights. Best part about them for me was how many game-changing plays he had. Like, every time he's around the ball something real bad was going to happen to the other team.

Very excited about this kid, think he's going to be an absolute stud and am surprised I didn't notice anyone mention a thing about him up until now.

Welcome Preston!

Listen, you're going to be competing with Trent Murphy, a fellow 2nd rounder, for playing time.

*Mortal Kombat theme starts*

FIGHT!

But seriously, I liked Preston in our mock draft, and traded up for him with Cinci.

Pegged him as a 4-3 end, but hey, what do I know?  If Scot thinks he's a 3-4 OLB, then by golly I'm all in.

Oh we brought him out into the light around the Senior Bowl. All positive things to say. Handful of posts through March. We had him targeted for sure. But his style of play wasn't conducive to hype making or champagne popping so it kind-of faded to the background. Some had a few other guys before him, the more speedy or flash type of edge guys.

A work hard do it all seldom makes the "panties drop."

Sorry for that line.

I swear I thought about you when I said I was surprised I didn't notice anyone talking about him, lol. :)

I really like that he blocks kicks.

As do I. Lets hope he blocks as many kicks, and makes as many game changing plays as the guy he models his game after...

Smith compares his game to Julius Peppers, who Carolina selected second overall in 2002.

Boy, am I glad I did, because Smith is pretty damn fun to watch on film. He is incredibly versatile -- I watched him play everything from a stand-up rush linebacker in a 3-4 type scheme, to a zero nose heads-up on the center on passing downs, and pretty much everywhere in between. What made him extra fun to watch is that he kicked ass pretty much everywhere he lined up.

Are you dying to find out what number he'll wear so you can request a name change?

Damn, that monster envisioned being like Portis as a 4th grader? I feel old

I thought the same thing. "I grew up idolizing Sean Taylor and Patrick Willis"

****in A. Found myself getting weirder out hearing Todd McClure and Michael Roos and EJ Henderson read off picks. "They're retired?"
