REDSKINS NAME JOE BARRY AS DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have named Joe Barry as Defensive Coordinator.

Barry is entering his 14th NFL season, including his third as a defensive coordinator. He has been a member of a defensive staff that has finished in the Top 10 in total defense five times, including No. 1 overall in 2002 and 2005. Under Barry, Tampa Bay Buccaneers Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Brooks was named the 2002 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

Barry most recently served as linebackers coach for the San Diego Chargers from 2012-14. Prior to his tenure in San Diego, he was the linebackers coach for Southern California from 2010-11. Barry helped mold linebacker Malcolm Smith into a 2011 draft selection who eventually went on to become the MVP of Super Bowl XLVIII.

Barry returned to Tampa Bay for his second stint with the team in 2009, again serving as the linebackers coach under current Redskins defensive backs coach Raheem Morris who was then the head coach. During his first tenure with Tampa Bay from 2001-06 the defense allowed the least passing yards per game (177.2), the second-lowest yards per game (285.7) and the second-fewest points per game (17.4). In addition, Buccaneers linebackers were named to the Pro Bowl seven times in his first six seasons. In 2002, he helped lead the Buccaneers to their first Super Bowl (XXXVII) championship in franchise history.

Barry served as the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions from 2007-08, where he led units that ranked tied for third in the NFL in takeaways (37) in 2007 and 10th in sacks per pass play in 2008. His NFL coaching career began in San Francisco in 2000, serving as a defensive quality control coach.

Barry began his prep career at Ames (Ia.) H.S. before finishing at Fairview H.S. in Boulder, Colo. Barry played linebacker at Michigan from 1989-90 before transferring to USC in 1991, earning varsity letters in the 1992 and ‘93 seasons. He began his coaching career for the Trojans in 1995. In 1996, he joined the Northern Arizona staff, coaching linebackers and defensive ends for three seasons. Barry was then hired to coach linebackers at Nevada-Las Vegas in 1999.

Barry and his wife, Chris, have two daughters, Camryn and Lauren, and twin sons, Nick and Sam.

I'll say this, he's fought his way back from the Detroit Lions debacle with those jobs.

We'll see about him.  Have a reserved feeling about this hire.  But if you give anyone the right horses it's difficult to lose the race.

Well, the only positive I will be taking from this decision was it might have been made by the new GM.

Had I been the one making the decision I will go with a safe bet and hired Wade Phillips.

I will give the new guy a clean slate.

I just want our defense to be a tough nosed D with football smarts.

Yes, I don't want to see 3rd and 1 and a DB giving a 10 yard cushion.

I don't want to see LB covering Wideouts...

I don't want to see two DBs covering one man and letting the other receiver be covered by no one.

I don't want to see 3rd and long and wondering what blown coverage will the D be calling.

I don't want to be on my couch seeing a play being run and wondering why the D can't recognize the play a couch potato like me can see.

Lastly, I don't want to see a D that contrives to find a way to put some player on the way to Canton by the way they repeatedly get touched by the same player.

Just asking for simple things.

So I take it you guys would have preferred that Haslett stayed?

A parking lot attendant will do.

Even the beerman!

Hate to take away your silver lining, but GM Scott said he's going to leave coaching staff hires up to da coach whom promptly turned around and hired his BFF from Tampa.

Can't be worse than Hazlett.....could it? He has been around talented DCs in the past and has probably learned a great deal, had lousy talent in Detroit and he wouldn't be the only coach to resurrect his career after a lousy season. One coach in particular is HC for team going to 2nd SB in a row.

I for one will hope he has learned and will prove to be a good hire.

Well as soon as Fangio turned us down we ran right back to Barry I would ve preferred Wade  Phillips as the plan B but I don't think any of the successful coaches will come here till we change the mentality of the coaching carousel. Fangio went to Chicago bc Fox just got his $year deal just now Gruden is on his 2nd year and posted a 4 -12 record prior. I hope to be wrong but I sure hope that barry doesn't bring his 0 and 16 defense here and just maybe he could put a top 5 defense together and shut us up.

Let's stop making false comparisons. Carroll never had the worst D in the league 2 years in a row, or even for a year for that matter. Worst season record wise as a DC was 6-10. Carroll's worst rankings - 23rd in yards, 18th in points. Coaches have had bad seasons, but I can't think of another DC who had the worst D in the league for 2 years in a row and later had a stellar career. In fact I can't think of a DC who produced the worst D for 2 years in a row period.
