GHH's Observations: The Good, The Bad and The 'Jeepers Creepers! Where did THAT come from ?!' W2: Hanging of Henne.

No need to sleep on anything this week after the best performance in YEARS! So straight into Week 2's musings. This should be easy:

The Good.

The Washington Redskins. How long has it been since we've enjoyed a game as much as that? Injuries aside and some dumbass penalties, that was almost the perfect Sunday. Highly efficient offense putting up 41 points.(Biggest blowout since we whooped Detroit's ass 34 -3 back in Week 5 of 2007.). Dominating D the likes we've not seen in years. Special Teams looking special again. SO good to be talking positives again. The end of the 9 game losing streak. Just HOW great alone does that feel? Brilliant guys. From the Coaches on down. Every last one of you.

Defense. FINALLY we get what we've craved for SO long from the much maligned D. A high pressure, swarming, attacking, totally dominating D. TEN sacks tying a franchise record set THIRTY-SEVEN years ago against a Tampa Bay team in only their second season of existence. EIGHTEEN hits on the Jaguars woeful QB Henne. 6 passes defended. An INT. Holding Jacksonville to EIGHT total first downs and only 148 total yards. Only 10 points allowed. We BEGGED for a dominating Redskins D. Today we finally GOT a dominating Redskins D. Front to back, brilliant performance.

Offense. Almost as dominating as the D. FIVE TD's. THIRTY-TWO First Downs. 449 total yards. 4 drives of 10 plays or more. Dominating possession on the ground and through the air to the tune of 39:01 in game time from EIGHTY-ONE offensive plays. ZERO turnovers. Seamlessly moving from QB1 to QB2, losing WR2 in the process, without missing a beat. On top of missing one of the biggest offensive threats from the get go in Jordan Reed. And our top receiver only having 1 catch. The Jay Gruden offense has arrived! 1-11, a brilliant performance fella's.

Special Teams. NO screw-ups. Killer punting. Brilliant returning. Swarming coverage Bar some dumbass penalty's, we saw a professional, efficient teams unit. Just WHEN was the last time that happened. Pat yourselves heartedly on the back guys.

Quaterbacks:

RGIII. For the short time he was in, he looked like the RGIII of 2012. Two brilliant read option runs. A beautiful 57 yard deep pass to Jackson that resulted in an AWFUL call. Even the sack wasn't his fault. We said last week he desperately needed, at the least, the THREAT of his legs back in the game plan. And Coach Jay gave us that.

Captain Kirk. Way to enter a game in relief young man. 22/33 for 250 yards and 2 TD's. Running the offense perfectly. To come off the bench SO composed is a MASSIVE testament to Kirks character. In only his second play on the field and first pass of the game he hits the wide open DY deep in the right corner for that 20 yard TD that was FAR from his first read. And he just got better from there.

Alfred Morris. As always, I don't have enough superlatives to cover The Butler. We discussed last week how ridiculous it was we got away from him. This week he get's 22 (20 should be the MINIMUM amount of touches for me from Alfred per game) and voila, the offense rolls. 2 TD's and whilst 'only' (for Alfred) 85 yards, he's now surpassed the 3,000 yard mark in just 3 pro season and 34 games. I've said it before and I'll say it again. If he stays healthy, Alfred will be RIGHT up there with ANY back in our storied history. The single best RB I've EVER seen after contact.

Niles Paul. FINALLY, FOUR years and 46 games in, Swiss Army Niles steps up and produces. And how. 8 receptions for 99 yards and a brilliant TD catch. The catch at the end of the first quarter (which should of been a TD for me when he was ruled down by contact at the 1) was even better. Yeah, he had that bad drop (it wouldn't be Paul without a negative); but all in all the best game of his Redskins career and a major influence on todays blowout.

Pierre Garcon. I wanted to make a special mention to # 88. Most folk will look at his 1 reception and think he had a poor game. But nothing could be further from the truth. As always, he was relentlessly unselfish in his blocking (does ANY receiver league wide block harder or better than Pierre?); but it's the mere threat he brings as a bona-fide # 1 wideout that helped out everyone else today. Whilst Jacksonville where pre-occupied with him, gaping holes opened up for others. A hugely influence game without the numbers.

Special offensive mention for Ryan Grant too. VERY nice introduction to the NFL. The fantastic catch and move to avoid the corner and get the first in the third was brilliant athleticism.

Jason Hatcher. Seriously, when was the last time we had a DT THIS disruptive and influential? I'm going right back to big Dave Butz. He's THAT good. EVERYTHING good the first two games on defense has started with Hatcher. The dudes almost unblockable, even when double teamed. The intense inside pressure he's getting all game is ridiculous. This guys a LEGIT superstar. Make NO mistake. MAJOR difference to this seasons D from last.

Ryan Kerrigan. What can I say about Ryan that I haven't said on countless times already? Along with his usual, non-stop energy and threat was a pass defended and a franchise record tying FOUR sacks, giving #91 28.5 in his 4 year career to date. Brilliant.

After last weeks (FULLY justified) heavy criticism of Orakpo, I'd be remiss to not give him props for today. The numbers don't jump out at you (2 tackles the whole game and 1 sack); but he was in and around most everything good. Jacksonville trying to block him with a TE was comically amusing. Very influential game from a pumped up 98. MUCH better.

Special mention for the inside backers Riley and Robinson too along with David Amerson. Riley looks FAR more athletic this year than at any other point of his career. Keenan seems to be inspiring him to become far more rounded and his career high 1.5 sacks where a fitting reward for his efforts. Keenan had his second great game and continues to show the promise some of us where so high on when we drafted him. And I thought Amerson was terrific again. He's fast on his way to becoming a legit number 1 corner. His anticipation today in knocking down 2 passes and almost having a couple of picks shows just how much his film study is improving. We've a great career corner here make NO mistake.

Andre Roberts. I LOVE him as a returner. He only has one thought when he's back there. Catch it and go up field! For those of us with long memory's he's like Mike Nelms. Fair catching the football is a complete insult and dirty word to him. Man, have we been waiting long enough for a great returner and now we finally have one again. And he stepped up with some great catches when DeSean went down. Brilliant addition.

The Coaching Staff. Brilliantly called game Coach. Loved some of the invention out there with the reverses et all. Going no huddle to up the temp was a VERY welcome return. And it's great to see you learnt from Week 1 in both a far more balanced offense sticking to our main strength in Alfred and the return of the threat of read option that had 10 looking like a completely different player and the superstar (most of us) still believe he is. And props to Hasslet too for some consistent and pretty inventive rushes that had Henne totally bamboozled. Your guys came prepared and executed to almost perfection. Great first win for this regime guys.

The Bad.

Injuries. The injury to DeSean could be costly enough, but the freak injury to Robert off a throw on a boot most every QB league wide makes could be immeasurable to our season. As previously mentioned, he was looking like a completely different player prior to going down and back to his 2012 form. Hopefully Kirk continues to step up but let's not fool ourselves into thinking he brings the threat Robert does. He doesn't. Whether it's a season ender as looks pretty certain, or just a large chunk of this year, this is a MASSIVE blow and makes todays wonderful performance bitter sweet. (It also begs the question of just how frail RGIII's body actually is for this game but that's for another thread.). Here's to a full, speedy recovery man. We need you back out there.

Penalties. Specifically on special teams. Although I thought the Davis hit was legit and a VERY questionable penalty, there's still FAR too many from the unit that will ultimately cost us in games. 11 total penalty's from the team as a whole is not good (even Trent W lost his cool and discipline out there today) and this indiscipline needs rectifying sooner rather than later.

Bacari Rambo. The one downside to the defense. The shocking angle he took to completely miss Lewis on Jacksonville's only TD was, well, SHOCKING. For the 2nd straight week. You're the deep safety. Lewis is the only deep man. And you take the wrong angle and let him get BEHIND you. To see you sat for Robinson the second half was not before time. Fast turning into another wasted pick as he'll surely be WELL down the pecking order now Merriweathers back after his abysmal start to the year continuing on from his poor rookie season.

The crowd. There looked a LOT of empty seats/ no-shows particularly in the upper section, which was bad enough. But all the empty red seats as the 4th rolled was real disappointing. Best overall performance in a LONG time and y'all can't stay behind to give the players the ovation they so richly deserved? Disappointing guys.

Only a 5th or so of bad to good. How's that for a major turnaround from the opener? :) .

The 'Jeepers Creepers! Where did THAT come from ?!!!'

I'm still buzzing as I type this. Roberts injury aside, that was the most enjoyable game in a LONG time. I can't remember the last time we dominated a team to the extent we did today. Yes, it was only Jacksonville, who are arguably the worst team in the entire league and we need to temper things and keep that in mind. There's MUCH tougher opposition to come starting next week with the best team in the East for me. But you can only beat what's in front of you (I expected another let down today and 0-2) and the players executed everything asked of them to perfection today in a TOTAL ass kicking.

A long way to go yet and they'll be a lot of inevitable downs on the way (not least how we might well now roll at QB now Kirk is thrust into the full time starting spotlight); but for today at least, we can bask in a fantastic performance from our guys and a real feel good Sunday for once. 9 games has been a LONG time coming.

The Jay Gruden era has officially begun!

As always, feel free to add at your leisure.

Hail.

About the no shows in the 400 level, did u notice the club level was packed, the Redskins with stubhub gave away tickets to the club level before the game, they had people on the concourse of the 400 level handing out tickets, went from 440 to 317.. Kinda cool

GHH, I agree with you.  For the first time since the 2nd half of the 2012 season, I watched the whole game and didn't go off and do something else in the house and peak back at the TV occasionally.

Was very happy with the game as a whole except for the incomplete call on DeSean's obvious completion, Robert getting hurt, and DeSean getting hurt.

Wow. Really?

Great move from the organisation.

Hail.

Yeah, it was awesome. I am thinking they are tired of seeing the club level look empty on TV. And there was no sales pitch we had to listen 2. Got an envelope with tickets and a letter with a card, if we were interested in buying seats.

Wait, what? They were upgrading people from the upper deck to club level? For free?

I'll add to this.  I'm eating some crow right now.

Niles Paul!!! I take back anything I've said, doubting you.  YOU are a MAN at Tight End!  Jordan take your time getting Healthy, I'm glad Niles made this squad.  I saw more athleticism, and precision today from Niles, than I've seen since Fred 'Sleepy' Jackson had that one really good season before being lost in ... whatever it was that got him suspended.

One more, Helu! Helu! What a run on that one drive!!

Lastly. Hatcher! You are a Beast, I can't wait to see you do that to Tony Romo ;)

Seriously, the crowd!

There was 3:00 to go in the 4th quarter and we were dominating them. Stadium was empty. Good job guys.

i'm sorry.. why does there have to be a thread dedicated to your analysis? 3rd week in a row including last preseason game.... ffs.... you paid for the servers or something? not trying to be mean and i like what you have to say [sometimes] but seriously? just wondering.....

I vote everyone gets their own thread!

But seriously, I always view it as a good/bad/ugly thread and everyone is invited to give their own opinion. The title comes off as self serving but that's fine by me.

I actually look forward to these each week. One of the unique things about this board IMO. GHH, keep em coming. It helps me reflect on everything i saw.

*Baltimore pre-season, but who's counting.

Why not?

I don't mean that in an egotistical arrogant way (the thread title just is what it originally was and means little of anything personally), just asking. *Shrugs.

These started as a frustrating answer to the Shanahan B/S last year to dissect the major problems some of us where seeing and developed into real good post game discussion threads with some great debate and analysis.

Seemed natural to continue them this year.

Hail.

Dude, why not? Its a discussion forum, GHH threads are more of what this board needs. I look forward to them every week.

absolutely.. if one member can get their own analysis thread then why not make umpteen hundred threads, right?!   then we can have a pole for whose is best....  might make it interesting....   /sarcasm... with that said, i just don't get it.... can't we all just say what we think about the last game in a single thread?

If that's the case after Philly, I'll say it's for real.

I don't think Philly is as good as everyone makes them out to be. Shady McCoy is their only real weapon, and if you pressure Foles he will make mistakes. Their offensive line is bad too, as they are missing Mathis (the best guard in the NFL) Lane Johnson and the backup RT. Kerrigan and Hatcher should have field days.

As long as there isn't another good/bad/ugly thread, I'm all for it.

I'm going to do this in reverse order this week:

Ugly: injury to Griffin. Really makes me sick. It's also concerning it really wasn't so much a contact play as a freak injury. Which is the first time has me questioning his durability.

Injury to DJax. Not good. Hopefully he's back quickly. With him out, it reduces the explosiveness of the offense, but also might effect ST. I don't think you keep Roberts returning both punts and kicks and is your #2 WR. Ripple effect here.

The unsportsmanlike penalty on Trent Williams. Dude, you're a captain and cost your team a chance at 4 extra points. Stop. Don't do that again.

Bad: ST penalties. For the love of Pete, clean those up.

The call on the Jackson deep pass. That was a catch. Blown call.

The Jaguars. They're really bad.

The good: just about everything else.

Special shout outs to:

Kerrigan

Baker

Roberts

Morris

Cousins

Niles Paul

Hatcher

Way (punter who also handled kickoffs)

Well, as long as the topics are specific then I don't see any harm.

Ideally, right now there should be...

A thread for RG3s injury

A thread for Kirk Cousin's play

A general injury thread that May or may not include RG3 discussion

A thread for the defense's play

A thread to discuss the long term impact of Cousins/RG3

A thread for general game discussion

A few other ancillary threads that will get closed

Have to keep discussion on topic and in their separate threads.
