:1386:Atlanta GA-. Welcome to the Extremeskins coverage of the first preseason game and the beginning of the  season.  I'm Hap Haszard in the press box and Zoony will be covering the sidelines.  A few of the players are on the field warming up and stretching Falcons on one end and Redskins on the other.

Great view of the field from the press box, much better than Fedex or TampaBay which are the other stadiums I've been at.  You would have to pay good money for these seats.

Redskins are wearing white jerseys and gold pants, Falcons red jersey and white pants.

12 minutes until game time and the stands are flat empty.

And the Redskins are taking the field faint boos are heard, from the few Atlanta fans here.

Redskins first team moving the ball well.  Big run but holding penalty caused 1st and 20.

Redskins first series resulted in a 54 yard punt to Falcons 1.

Redskins D held Atlanta to 3 yards on 3 plays, Atlanta punts and McCoy is in for Washington's second series.

Second series, Redskins 41 yard FG by Hopkins.

Redskins kickoff resulted in a touchback, Atlanta's ball at the 25 yard line.

Atlanta's second possession was -1 yards, Defense is balling.

Washington starts 3rd series at the 28 yard line.  Run game still needs a lot of work, 3 and out for Washington

Atlanta's 3rd series 2 first downs. End of the first quarter.

Redskins 3 Atlanta 0

:1386:2nd quarter:1386:

47 yard pass to Washington 12

Run of 10 yards to Redskins 2 ylard line. False start 1st and goal from 7 now 3rd and goal from the 11.  Defensive penalty 5 yards to 6 yard line, incomplete pass, FG Atlanta. Tied at 3.

Washington's first series 2nd half - McCoy at  QB - 3rd down and 5 - McCoy runs for 8 to get a first down.  Washington's run game needs a lot of work.

False start on the Redskins, 2nd down 16, 3rd down and 11, 4th down and punt.  Huge pass by Atlanta 68 yards first down Washington 4, run to  foot line, TD Atlanta 10 -3

3 and out for Redskins after a nice return by Thorpe.

Atlanta is marching down the field against the Redskins D.  Cravens stopped a run in the backfield. He is having a good game. Despite penalties, Atlanta converts a 42 yard FG to make it 13 - 3 at the half.

:1386:Halftime:1386:

The Redskins played decent defense during the first quarter, but really stunk it up in the 2nd quarter.  The offense really wasn't burning down the barn either.  I know its preseason and all but it looks from here like there is a lot of work that needs to be done.  Now its time for the guys who will be working at 7-11 in a month or so to show what they can do.

:1386:Third Quarter:1386:

And they just did kick return by Atlanta 101 yards its now 20-3, Hail.

I know this is preseason, and the first team was only in for a series so I'm not upset over the play but there is going to have to be some work on penalties. They are causing a lot of problems.

Sudfeld in at QB - first down for the Redskins. Run loss of 2, 2nd and 12. about a 40 yd pass dropped by Ross. 3rd and 12, incomplete 4th down. Punt time.

5 million yard punt actually 64 yards.

Atlanta's either 3rd or 4th string QB is in now.   Atlanta runs and Cravens stopped it in the back field for 5 yard loss.  Pass to Redskins 42, pass to Redskins 17, run for 1 yard stopped by Trail. 4th and 11. 36 yard field goal is good. 23-3 Atlanta.

Redskins are good running and passing to Atlanta 17. Run to 1. Flags everywhere on next play.  Offset penalties replay first down at 2 foot line. TD Redskins Kelly.  23-10

The game on both both teams is getting sloppy. Cravens is really having a decent game but he is in against 3rd and 4th string players now.  Redskins' roughing passer penalty gives Atlanta a first and 10. Atlanta has been going deep on the Redskins, this time it didn't work. 4th down. Delay of game by Atlanta.

The Atlanta crowd is amusing themselves by doing the wave. Its a bit hard to do with so few in the stadium.  Redskins punt out of bounds. Atlanta 1st at 30.

:1386:End of the 3rd Quarter Atlanta 23 Redskins 10:1386:

Fumble Redskins recover at Atlanta 34. Play being reviewed. Confirmed to be a fumble.

Redskins run for 3, run for first down, 3rd down incomplete pass. 4th down. Redskins going for it. Pass to Ross for 1st down. Zebra error, reset the play clock and try it again. Hey its preseason for them too. First down Redskins, Run gain of 5, Run gain of 2, Pass TD. Extra Point is good. 23-17

Things are getting so sloppy its not worth reporting on whats happening.  I'll report scores if any happen.

After a series of defensive penalties, Atlanta misses a field goal attempt. The Redskins take over and now the offense is producing their own penalties. 1 minute left in the game.

Over all I would say the Redskins played a very sloppy game.  Same penalties on multiple plays so I'm sure they can be corrected.  I think I counted 5 lined up in the neutral zone by the D, that can be corrected.  What worries me is the running game, I did not see much there. The secondary gave up some really long plays, not a couple but several.

So, I got home from work, put the game on and watched maybe the 1st quarter before falling asleep, lol.

By the looks of it, though, Kirk and the first team defense looked good and everything else was terrible.

I'm ok with that.... for now. I don't want to see this type of play linger, preseason or not.

It would have been nice to see improvement in the running game, but I'm holding all judgments until the regular season starts and rosters are finalized.  There's no need to get our panties in a bunch over preseason.

We talkin bout practice.

It's early, but the first evidence of how well the Skins "NT" point of defense (first string) will hold up versus the run, doesn't inspire confidence.

Granted the Falcons have a great center, but the decision to rely primarily on Golston for the NT run-blocking role didn't seem to be paying off ...this particular night.

This is true, but if we werent coming off the debacle of a running game of last season, I wouldnt have this twinge of doubt.  Same OL, same coaches, the starter is the guy that didnt impress last year and a couple of unheralded rookies. Not like therevareva ton of spots up for grabs as far as the running game is concerned. The ones that are, are the people that wont play, except for LG. I'm trying to see what's gonna be different.

Everyone does realize this was a "preseason" game, right?

The only thing you can get out of this is if the 1s played very well. After that you really have no idea. The 1st team Off and D looked overall pretty good outside the run game. The Oline obviously missed TW. Let's see what the run game looks like in the next few weeks. If people remember, we looked bad in the run game last preseason. But then exploded in the 1st 2 actual games only to have KL and SL go down for the season.

The apoplectic concerns over all things Redskins, while predictable, is just not necessary and IMO total over-reaction. I could care less how they play in the first game of the preseason outside the 1s. They are putting guys in situations. They are looking at different combinations of players. Most will never play together again. Also, there were several key players out of the game for precaution.

This is the purpose of "preseason" games. Make mistakes, get some coaching and fix them. As for the penalties, some of that's rust and some of that are the refs letting the teams know what can be called and some rust on their parts too. It's preseason for the refs also.

I turned it off after the 1st Q. The rest is not much more than a glorified scrimmage. The 1st teams looked good enough to be optimistic.

Their top RB Freeman only had 9 yards on 5 carries.

They finished with only 79 yards rushing. Where did they not hold up? If by "hold up" you mean stop EVERY SINGLE  running play up the middle cold, then you want perfection. So you will be disappointed because not even the best rush defenses can do that.

No, everything else wasn't terrible.

Cravens was great. Showed why so many are excited about his potential. I don't think it is hyperbole to say that Sean Taylor is the only other defensive player I remember to have a more explosive preseason debut.

Cravens didn't come out of the gate like Taylor, but he came out fast. :)

There were other good individual efforts that you would like.

As I said in other threads, it is clear the Falcons game planned for this game, and we did not. They also kept many of their starters in for much of the first half. Whereas the Redskins had theirs out (offense and defense) after about 7 plays.

I suggest you watch the whole game when you get the chance, and you will get a better idea. :)

And put me down for the group who thinks the run game sucked eggs lol...if it wasn't the OLine getting pushed back 5 yards or letting defensive players get tons of penetration it was RBs looking tentative, doing too much dancing around, and getting straight-up stoned at the point of contact to the point that they kept getting lifted off their feet and carried backwards several yards. I'm not sure I saw more than maybe 5 feet of yards after contact in our running game the first half.

A few facts after some sleep

First downs Redskins 14  Atlanta 17

3rd down efficiency  Redskins 5 - 15 33%  Atlanta 2 - 10 20%

Ave gain Rushing  Redskins 3.3  Atlanta 2.8 Note: This stat surprises me I thought that Atlanta out ran us however both teams had 79 total yards rushing.

Net yards passing  Redskins 155  Atlanta 280.

Red Zone Efficiency Redskins 2-2 100%  Atlanta 1-3 33%

A few more stats that stood out (I like stats).

Tackled for a Loss: Redskins 4 (7 yards), Atlanta 7 (18 yards)
Times Sacked: Redskins 3 (26 yards), Atlanta 0 (0 yards)
Ave Rush: Redskins 3.3 yards, Atlanta 2.8 yards
Ave Pass: Redskins 4.6 yards, Atlanta 9.0 yards
Ave Play: Redskins 4.0 yards, Atlanta 6.1 yards
Ave Punt: Redskins 53.7 yards, Atlanta 47.0 yards

Quick question. I'm not sure of the difference between a forum, blog and chat room. Briefly, how should each be used?

Wanted to add something else - I actually saw someone say, mind you based just on the few minutes played last night against mostly scrubs and back-ups, that we could have a controversy for back-up QB! And so begins the romance with whatever 3rd, 4th or worse string QB on the Redskins roster!

Let's start with Vernon Davis has to catch that ball! The entire complexion of the game and McCoys performance changes if he does. Second, and I am not sure why this is so hard to grasp this - Sudfeld did what he did against guys that will be bagging groceries in a few weeks and McCoy has already had some success in the NFL. That's not to mean he will develop into a good QB. He is just a rookie. And he clearly shows promise - but a controversy for #2?

There is no controversy! Maybe next year McCoy moves on and Sudfeld takes his place. I am glad he is Redskin and should provide solid depth and will have some excellent time to grow without being thrown to the wolves. That's how you grow a roster. But barring injury McCoy will be the #2 this year. Any talk of a controversy is purely mythical and just makes no sense what so ever!

Allow me to re-write part of your post lol...

And for ****s and giggles, once more lol...

"Second, and I am not sure why this is so hard to grasp this - Colt Brennan did what he did against guys that will be bagging groceries in a few weeks and Campbell has already had some success in the NFL. " 2008, 1st preseason game

So, you see, overreacting to performances in preseason games is tradition around these parts lol *thumbsup*

On the plus side, the starting D played very well.  Also, the passing game clicked well.  The running game is still a concern, but if thats the case, thats better than both the D and run game being concerned.  Im hoping to see that D continue to hold up, if so that will be our biggest key this year.

I could not watch the whole thing this morning before work (live in NY and DVR'ed it).

What I liked:

Cousins. Looked crisp. Good pocket presence. Zip on ball. Accuracy. I little dink/dunky, but his time was so short. Cant really complain... and dink/dunk is being REALLY picky.

Defense looked stout... and FAST to the ball. Loved, loved, loved the run stoppage. Cant wait to see them unleashed in a real game planned game. Super excited to see them!

Special Teams. A bit 50/50 in this. Kicking/punting game was great. Return game... meh.

Receivers were getting open consistently. Looking forward to more.

What I didn't like:

Running game was pretty bad. Too much dancing around. Though Matt Jones only carried twice, he supported my thoughts on him. He has no vision, and runs too upright. He will get stoned and drop.get stripped of the ball if he continues to play like this. I hope he gets better, but I think I saw enough of him last year to pretty much close the book on him. We need some help here.

Yeah, that's why I made sure to put the "fell asleep the rest of the game" part. That was just my initial, weak, assessment and purposely exaggerated. ;)

I've watched the entire game now and I don't think I was far off, lol. Certainly not "everything" was terrible outside of Kirk and first string D, but a lot was. That's ok, though. First preseason game and we've had a fairly easy camp, so guys need to get adjusted.

And, I agree, Cravens flashed a ton, which is exactly what you want to see right now. He's got me very excited about what he can do now. I also liked the way guys like Lynden Trail, Ziggy Hood and Matt Ioannidis looked.

Still, I think it's ok to expect slight improvement as we move forward this preseason, don't want to see that type of play linger, especially the running game on both sides. I'm sure the coaches feel exactly the same as well. :)
