Mr. Nostril
I don't know if I'd go as far as all that. I saw "The Great Train Robbery" and I thought that would perfectly well considered a movie. There were certainly things added that were commonly associate with movies between "The Great Train Robbery" and "Birth of a Nation" but there were things added since "Birth of a nation as well" for example sound. Maybe we should say "The Jazz Singer" is the first movie. Or whatever the first color film was.

The way they made the dinos, its was so original and believeable that you'd swear it could happen anyday now. Atleast I did.

dannyboy70
Don't want to get too esoteric, so I'm leaving out The Great Train Robbery, Battleship Potemkin, Earth, Trip to the Moon, Birth of a Nation, Sunrise, Metropolis, Nosferatu, Citizen Kane, Blah blah blah blah. I think Tarantino has done some very creative storytelling with Pulp Fiction and the Kill Bill series.

Tarhog
I'd define some of those choices as more 'bizarre' than 'original' although I admit, its a fine line. '2001: A Space Odyssey' has to be on the list..incredible movie for its time period. I'd also have to jump on 'The Usual Suspects' bandwagon. 'Slingblade', 'American Beauty', 'Artificial Intelligence', 'Road to Perdition' were some recent ones. And ANYTHING done by the Coen Brothers: Blood Simple Barton Fink (although it probably qualifies as bizarre) Miller's Crossing Raising Arizona I'm not one of those that would argue about the 'downfall' of American Cinema. There are incredible movies made every single year.

Om
Before I opened the thread, I had three titles pop to mind. Riggo-toni nailed one of them immediately---Being John Malkevic. Took a while, but Tarhog nailed another---2001: A Space Odyssey. That one probably heads my list. It's STILL ahead of its time, 36 years after its release. And I'll add Being There. Throroughly, unapologetically original.
Dallsux
I'm a HUGE Tarantino fan & Woo fan. From Tarantino I would have to say Pulp Fiction. I love the way the story bounces around and somewhere connects to something and someone else. From Woo, I would have to say Hard Boiled. I love Woo's Hong Kong style. You'll NEVER see an American director show such disregard for innocent bystanders like Woo does. But what makes it great is that it's realistic in the sense that all too often in American films, you'll see a shootout in the middle of a street or in public somewhere & every stray bullet winds up being harmless. Woo makes many of his stray bullets hit someone-usually someone who isn't involved with the scene at all. They just happen to be there & end up up shot. I also would have to say that Usual Suspects was one of the better ones with an ending that shocks just about everyone.
