Bishop quits job and apologises after 'all-male orgy in rectory goes wrong'

A Polish bishop has apologised as he confirmed his resignation weeks after a sex worker passed out at a hidden orgy, allegedly organised by one of his clergy.

Grzegorz Kaszak, the bishop of Sosnowiec had come under increasing pressure in recent weeks to step down from his role after details about an all-male orgy were leaked to the press.

The reason for his sudden resignation has not been alluded to, but the 59-year-old did put out his own statement on the diocesan website.

Conservatives in the Polish Church reportedly urged him to step down for several weeks after the sex party, allegedly held at the rectory of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Angels church in Dabrowa Gornicza, a small city near Katowice, at the end of August.

It's alleged the orgy was arranged by Tomasz Zmarzly, the parish priest, and with several other clergy showing up to take part.

Polish press alleged that a participant, a 27-year-old male sex worker, passed out at the party after "overdosing on erectile dysfunction tables" at around 1am.

Another participant who had allegedly been ejected from the party, rang the emergency services for help, but on arrival, a team of paramedics were barred from entering.

But this all changed when they returned with extra force from the police, where it's alleged they found a naked man inside the rectory who needed hospital treatment, Polish press claims.

The individual is claimed to have recovered in hospital and later discharged himself.

Zmarzly has protested his innocence despite being suspended and made a public statement to Deon, a Polish Catholic news website.

The statement reads: "I regard this [allegation] as a blatant attack on the Church, including its clergy and followers, in order to disparage its position, its work and its mission."
