Official 2023 Roster Cuts News & Speculation Thread

I think you have to count 4 specialists now counting the return man. Whatever offensive position that guy plays is semi irrelevant. If you have position flex you gain a spot, if not, you have 49 roster positions.

So, my thoughts

First, the locks:

QB (3): Howell, Brissett, Fromm

RB (3): Robinson, Gibson, Rodriguez

WR (5): McLaurin, Dotson, Samuel, Brown, Pringle

TE (3): Thomas, Turner, Bates

T (3): Leno, Wylie, Lucas

G (4): Cosmi, Charles, Paul, Stromberg

C (2): Gates, Larsen

That is 23.

DE (4): Young, Sweat, Jones, JSW

DT (4): Allen, Payne, Mathis, Ridgeway

LB (4): Davis, Barton, Hudson, Mayo

CB (5): Forbes, Fuller, St Juste, Johnson, Holmes

S (5): Curl, Forrest, Reaves, Martin, Butler

That is 22. So 45 total.

K (1): Slye

P (1): Way

LS (1): Cheeseman

Return (1): Milne (ugh)

That is 49 total. That leaves me with 4 roster slots.

I think Tinsley (WR), Henry (DE, draft pick), Obada (flex), Daniels (OT, draft pick).

With the logjam at WR, DE and DB plus the need for a guy who can return punts I just don’t think we can carry 3 QBs on the 53.

It might come down to Fromm or Tinsley.

3 QBs is a luxury, and neither of the backups is some young rookie you want to hold onto to "groom." We can't afford to keep 3 imo.

Dallas just released Will Grier who I think has more potential than Jake. So I think it would be relatively safe to release Fromm and move to PS without some other team sniping him

The third is for emergency purposes. You do NOT want to be caught without a QB.

Their best bet is two on active roster and hoping Fromm or another cut QB can sit on the practice squad. Otherwise, they need 3 on the active roster.

I can’t see anyone claiming Fromm - I’d try to get him through waivers and put him on the PS.

I am officially speculating that the Washington Commanders will be the most underrated team in the NFL this season.  I'm not saying it's not beatable, but you're going to have to bring your A game.  F it.  Super Bowl, baby.  Howell MVP.  Jahan Dotson PB starter.  Forbes DROY.  Book it, right now.

I think Kaz Allen is heading to the practice squad. The drops and muffed punt yesterday make it hard to keep him on the 53. He needs a year on PS.

More than the 2 drops and the muffed punt, I think the fair catch at the 5 yard line sealed Kaz’s PS fate.

I think the only way we keep just 3 TEs is if we carry a FB like Armah. My roster breakdown:

2 QBs (Fromm has a few years in and looks like he has peaked. A third QB most at risk now would be some young gun who might develop into something.)

4 RBs (Includes Armah as he can also play move TE. Of our next 3 RBs, I think they are probably no better than any other teams top 4-5 so 2 should be available to PS)

3 TEs (For game 1 and 2, this sort of depends on Logan's real status but Armah can also play our #4 TE)

6 WRs (after the top 6, no one WR on our roster is better than any other teams top 6)

9 OL (2-3 of our best after the first 9 with development potential will make it through waivers. After 9, I don't really see anyone who would make another teams best 8-10 without further development)

24 on offense.

11 DLs (this is the main position where guys at the bottom of our roster may actually be better than the guys at the bottom of other teams 53)

4 LBs

11 DBs

26 on defense.

Of course, LB, DB, RB and WR fills also depend heavily on which group offers the greatest teams contributions at the bottom.

For a player to be reactivated from IR, don't they have to be on the 53 for game 1? This might end up being another driver behind day 1 roster construction.

Yep. That was a bad mistake.

You see guys fielding punts inside the 10 (rule always used to be heels on the 10 yard line and if the ball goes over you let it go). But if you field it you have to be bringing it out - you never want to fair catch that ball.

I think Tinsley made a strong case for the roster, but since they are so deep at the position, he's going to wind up on the PS.  Burgess made a strong case with that nice INT

Totally agree with this. I think Tinsley makes it ti the PS while Burgess and Quan make the roster as safety and DB, or vice versa. How ever they label them.

If Kaz Allen had a good game yesterday, he more than likely takes Milne's spot at PR.  Now he's probably off the roster or on the PS at best

No doubt. It’s a shame because you really saw that electric and burst during that kickoff return.

I think we go through this every year. Players appear to have a good camp and fans get a man crush but they end up getting cut. I just leave it to the coaches to make their determination. They see them in practice and have a better read on them then we do.....usually.

I don't think there's a strong chance of someone picking up Fromm if we waive him.

right now there's plenty of guys who are going to be cut who seem likely to be in higher demand than Jake

I don’t, either. But your third emergency QB can’t come in the game or even dress if they aren’t on the 53.

Ideally that wouldn’t matter and we wouldn’t go through two QBs in a single game. But…

@MartinC Which 9 DL are you keeping?

I’d keep ten, eleventh being Mathis on IR. Let him heal that calf and have some more time from last years injury to recover. By the time he’s available to come off IR there will be open spots from other injuries.

he's gotta make the opening roster to go to IR to come back in the season

Right. They do it every year tho. Initial 53 is never the opening day 53. So probably keep eleven then IR him, go into the season with 10 and immediately bring up someone else at another position.

According to Keim, Armah might have a spot since they ran alot of plays during camp using him.

Yessir… Been saying that too. I think his skill set is needed in this offense. EB is going to find a way to keep him. I really hope so.
