US F-16s air police NATO’s Southern Flank

US F-16s air police NATO’s Southern Flank. Two F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft are being deployed to Croatia’s Air Base in Pleso to execute a combat exercise with the Croatian allies “while supporting NATO’s collective defence in Southeast Europe”, US Forces at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany said on Wednesday.

According to a press release from the US Embassy in Zagreb, the US Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa (USAFE-AFAFRICA) “employs agile forces and strategic capabilities to forward locations to counter threats or aggression through proactive movement alongside Allies and partners.”

“Our enduring alliances and partnerships throughout the European and African theatres have enabled our multi-capable Airmen to execute our mission as a dynamic coalition force,” said US Air Force General Jeff Harrigian, commander of USAFE-AFAFRICA.

“Directing our strategic capabilities from any number of forward locations builds a resilient force, ready to pivot and counter aggression anywhere at a moment’s notice,” he added.

The press release said that by executing such operations in Croatia, the Air Force builds allied and partner capabilities throughout Southeast Europe and extends into the Mediterranean Sea.

The investigation into the Soviet-era uncrewed aerial vehicle that crashed in Zagreb last week will continue in the coming days and weeks, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said during a visit to Spain on Wednesday.

Russia warns United States: we have the might to put you in your place

Russia warned the United States on Thursday that Moscow had the might to put the world's pre-eminent superpower in its place and accused the West of stoking a wild Russophobic plot to tear Russia apart.

Dmitry Medvedev, who served as president from 2008 to 2012 and is now deputy secretary of Russia's Security Council, said the United States had stoked "disgusting" Russophobia in an attempt to force Russia to its knees.

"It will not work - Russia has the might to put all of our brash enemies in their place," Medvedev said.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, the United States and its European and Asian allies have slapped sanctions on Russian leaders, companies and businessmen, cutting off Russia from much of the world economy.

President Vladimir Putin says that what he calls the special military operation in Ukraine was necessary because the United States was using Ukraine to threaten Russia and Russia had to defend against the "genocide" of Russian-speaking people by Ukraine.

Ukraine says it is fighting for its existence and that Putin's claims of genocide are nonsense. The West says claims it wants to rip Russia apart are fiction.

Russia says that despite sanctions it can fare well without what it casts as a deceitful and decadent West led by the United States.

Japan says it spotted Russian amphibious ships heading toward Europe

Japan said on Thursday it spotted four Russian amphibious ships in waters close to its shores on Wednesday.

The Japanese military said the four ships sailed in the Tsuruga Strait that separates Japan's Honshu island and Hokkaido island, an unusual move for Russia, Reuters reported.

The ships are able to hold military equipment, including tanks, and hundreds of troops.

Japan's defense ministry released pictures of the ships that appeared to have military trucks on at least one of them, according to Reuters.

When a defense ministry spokesperson was asked if the equipment could be going to Ukraine, he said "it is possible.”

New Republican bill would allow American citizens to seize Russian vessels by force

A Texas lawmaker has introduced legislation that would allow private U.S. citizens to seize assets and property owned by Russian oligarchs who have been sanctioned in response to Russia's ongoing war with Ukraine.

The bill, introduced on Feb. 28 by Rep. Lance Gooden from Dallas, would require President Joe Biden to issue letters of marque and reprisal for the seizure of yachts, planes or other property owned by those on the Treasury Department's list of sanctioned Russians. The proposal comes as the U.S. continues to increase sanctions against Russia's elite in response to the country's war against Ukraine. While Biden has warned Russian oligarchs that the U.S. will seize their “ill-begotten gains," Gooden says it's not enough.

"Putin’s inner circle have planes and yachts sitting at airports and harbors all over the world," Gooden said in a March 1 news release. "If President Biden refuses to act quickly, then it is time Congress and American citizens take matters into their own hands. Russian oligarchs must be held accountable for enabling the disgusting invasion of Ukraine.”

Letters of Marque and Reprisal, a historic tool authorized in Article 1 of the U.S. Constitution, allow private citizens or groups to seize enemy property on behalf of the U.S. government. Such letters were used during the War of 1812, but have not been issued since.

UPDATE: Koch Industries breaks silence

On Monday, Popular Information broke the news that Koch Industries, the conglomerate run by right-wing billionaire Charles Koch, continued to business in Russia through three wholly-owned subsidiaries. Hundreds of other companies have exited Russia as its military intensified attacks on Ukraine, including targeting civilians.

Koch Industries did not respond to multiple requests for comment. It attempted to let the story fade away without confirming or denying its activities in Russia. But Popular Information's report on Koch Industries was picked up in the New York Times, CBS News, Newsweek, Marke****ch, Daily Beast, and other outlets.

On Wednesday morning, Popular Information exposed how pundits and groups backed by Charles Koch were publicly advocating against economic sanctions on Russia — without disclosing their ties to Koch.

On Wednesday afternoon, Koch Industries finally spoke. It released a public statement from Koch Industries' COO, Dave Robertson. The statement confirmed that Koch Industries was still doing business in Russia. And it made clear that Koch Industries has no plans to stop.

Quote

Koch company Guardian Industries operates two glass manufacturing facilities in Russia that employ about 600 people. We have no other physical assets in Russia, and outside of Guardian, employ 15 individuals in the country. While Guardian’s business in Russia is a very small part of Koch, we will not walk away from our employees there or hand over these manufacturing facilities to the Russian government so it can operate and benefit from them (which is what The Wall Street Journal has reported they would do). Doing so would only put our employees there at greater risk and do more harm than good.
