Missouri AG launches Senate bid, setting up primary clash with Greitens

 

Missouri state Attorney General Eric Schmitt announced he’s running for Senate Wednesday, setting up a clash with former Gov. Eric Greitens as Republicans fight to hold the seat next year.

Schmitt is the second Republican to enter the race to replace retiring GOP Sen. Roy Blunt, who said earlier this month he would not seek a third term.

 

Some Republicans fear Greitens winning the nomination would put the otherwise safe seat in jeopardy in the fall, complicating their path to winning back the Senate majority. Greitens resigned as governor in 2018 after allegations that he sexually assaulted and blackmailed a woman, which he denied, and after making a deal with the St. Louis prosecutor’s office that it would drop unrelated charges that he’d used a veterans charity he’d created to fundraise for his gubernatorial campaign, an alleged violation of campaign finance laws.

Trump backs Rep. Mo Brooks in Alabama Senate race, who cheered Capitol rioters for ‘kicking ass’

 

Former President Donald Trump is throwing his support behind Rep. Mo Brooks in next year’s Alabama Senate race, a staunch supporter who cheered the Jan. 6 crowd at the Capitol for “taking down names and kicking ass.”

 

“Few Republicans have as much COURAGE and FIGHT as Alabama Congressman Mo Brooks,” Trump said in a statement Wednesday.

 

“(Brooks is) a great Conservative Republican leader, who will stand up for America First no matter what obstacles the Fake News Media, RINOs (Republicans in Name Only), or Socialist Democrats may place in his path,” the former president said.

 

Trump added that the right-wing lawmaker “has my Complete and Total Endorsement.”

 

Brooks is gunning for retiring Sen. Richard Shelby’s seat in the deep-red state in 2022. Shelby, a six-term senator who’s held the seat since 1987, announced in February that he wouldn’t be seeking reelection.

They currently receive more than 30% of their state revenues from the US government (Link) while contributing less than 1% to the GDP (Link). 

 

They have a 21% decline in state revenue due to COVID-19, yet have the 5th worst vaccination rate.

Republicans fret over divisive candidates

 

Republicans are sounding the alarm that divisive candidates running across the country could cost them key Senate and gubernatorial races next year.

 

The party is concerned that disruptive contenders could hurt their chances of keeping Senate seats in Missouri, Alabama and Wisconsin and flipping the governor’s mansion in Virginia.

 

Republicans are also nervously watching primaries for open Senate seats in North Carolina and Ohio and Democratic-held seats in Arizona and Georgia.

 

Nearly a dozen GOP strategists and donors almost unanimously said former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens (R), who resigned in disgrace in 2018 and is running for Senate, carries the most baggage out of any midterm candidate.

 

But there are also concerns over Alabama Rep. Mo Brooks, who pushed objections to the Electoral College and is running for Senate; Sen. Ron Johnson (Wis.), who hasn’t said if he’s running for reelection but has voiced provocative views on Black Lives Matter and the Jan. 6 insurrection; and Virginia state Sen. Amanda Chase, who describes herself as “Trump in heels,” could backfire in an increasingly blue state.

 

Operatives are mainly worried that their support with a die-hard primary electorate might not translate to statewide appeal.

Having trouble wrapping my head around probably the most famous transgender in the US, running for office in a political party where one of their most important agendas for the last 20 years has been to protect society from people like her, by making sure that they are never treated like "normal people".  

 

I mean, I assume the explanation is going to be something like "Oh, I don't support that issue.  But I'm Republican because I support (some value that the GOP hasn't actually supported for 30 years)"

The CA recall movement / open up movement has been spearheaded by Evangelical churches across the state.  I find this news amusing.  I assumed a prominent Pastor would be the top candidate.  This nearly assumes Newsome will prevail.  Additionally, CA COVID numbers have made a drastic turnaround.

 Quick search seems to indicate that Caitlyn Jenner's net worth is around 100 million dollars.
