just started Five Decembers.

needed something different after finishing Cats Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut.  I hated that book so much that it was an act of defiance just to finish it.  I tend to like that author so I was surprised… still though, I hated it it so damn much it put me off the science fiction book I had lined up to follow it.  A hard boiled noir is a great change of pace, it’s been a while since I’ve picked one up.

Christopher Moore is cleverly funny.  The only other authors that make me lol as much are Terry Pratchett & Carl Hiaasen.  They are the only authors whose books I revisit.

I can recommend them all.  "The Lust Lizard" is 2nd in the series, (there are three, and should be read in order)

Christopher Moore is great. I really enjoyed Lamb, the story of Jesus’ childhood friend who Jesus uses to observe sin.Lots of sins.

Finished Emily St John Mandel's "Sea of Tranquility". It's not a true sequel to her last novel, "The Glass Hotel", but she tends to move characters through all her books. Plus, they generally are in the less than 300 page range so I find them easier to digest.

Some might know her from "Station Eleven", which has been adapted to a HBO series.

Also finished the first two books of the Last Policemen series and just started Harlan Coben's newest book, "The Match", which is a sequel to "The Boy from the Woods".

Flying east in a few weeks so I'm saving Stephen Graham Jones' (author of The Only Good Indians) "My Heart is a Chainsaw" for that down time on the plane and with the parents in Lewisburg. 😁

I just revisited that one.

You almost have to read them a couple of times, to catch some of the subtle humor, and allusions

I'm reading Coyote Blue right now, (for the first time), and am really digging it.  I accidentally clicked on "14 day loan", and forgot that I downloaded it.  The loan ends in a couple of days, so I know what I'll be doing over the next day, or so 😄

If it's on Kindle, put it in airplane mode. The book will get auto returned but your Kindle won't know.

It's the one trick I know from the library. I don't read books kindle quickly so anything over a few hundred pages can tax my 21 day checkout. Damn you Neal Stephenson. 😆

I devour books, quickly.    It must be a family trait, because my Mom, brother and sister are fast readers too.  I just can't turn the pages fast enough while enjoying a good read.

That being said, Stephenson books do take much longer to read.  Thanks for the reminder.....now I need to check out his latest, "Termination Shock"

I'm a big fan of those types of sweeping, epic and very, very smartly written stories.

I've tried to read Cryptonomicon several times over the years from the library. Finally broke down and got it digitally for less than $3...will probably read it before 2050...

Five Decembers is a hell of a story. I found myself making time for it because I really didn’t want to put it down.  Interesting plot with a lot of heart, easy to see why it won awards.  I’d be shocked if they didn’t turn it into a movie, and it deserves to be done well.  Should be done like LA Confidential, patiently with a focus on the characters and not just the action.

great recommendation @The Evil Genius

Reading Don Winslow's newest, City on Fire, the first of a 3 part trilogy. About 2/3 through and would definitely recommend.

Quote

Two criminal empires together control all of New England.

Until a beautiful woman comes between the Irish and the Italians, launching a war that will see them kill each other, destroy an alliance, and set a city on fire.

Danny Ryan yearns for a more “legit” life and a place in the sun. But as the bloody conflict stacks body on body and brother turns against brother, Danny has to rise above himself. To save the friends he loves like family and the family he has sworn to protect, he becomes a leader, a ruthless strategist, and a master of a treacherous game in which the winners live and the losers die.

From the gritty streets of Providence to the glittering screens of Hollywood to the golden casinos of Las Vegas, two rival crime families ignite a war that will leave only one standing. The winner will forge a dynasty.

Going to read Five Decembers next.

Can anyone recommend a short series (like a trilogy) that is sci fi or post apocalyptic or similar (and also really good)?  My last 4 books have been historical nonfiction or bios and I need to lighten up.

BTW, The Anarchy, the story of the east india company, is exactly what you’d expect. Informative, infuriating, and only mildly entertaining.

Just finished How the South Won the Civil War by Heather Cox Richardson

If you've been wondering how the Republican Party became what it is today, I can recommend it.  Nothing earth shattering though.  Ultimately, the title says it all but from the birth of the nation to Donald Trump, there's a lot of good political history along the way.

Finished Robert E Lee and Me.  Interesting read, that satisfied a history/political itch.  Crazy to read about a guy growing up in Alexandria idolized the south and confederates, but I guess things were different when this state was still very red.

Currently listening to the audiobook version of The Story of Philosophy.  I’m enjoying it immensely

The Muderbot Diaries by Martha Wells.  They’re on book 6, but only one of them is a full length book.  The rest are ~150 pages.  Fun reads.

Commonwealth Saga by Peter Hamilton.  The opposite of murder bot in layout, just 2 books but they’re both north of 700 pages each.  Excellent sci-fi that imagines an interesting future landscape.

I am listening to The Burning White by Brent Weeks (book 5 of Light Bringer series).   I have really enjoyed this version of magic where drafters of different colors have different powers.   As a small aside, it also has had my very favorite take on mirrors.  One of the characters makes point mirrors are image splitters like prisms are light splitters.  Looking in the mirror is like looking through a prism.  We suddenly see all the parts of us, not the whole, and it's human nature to focus on all the parts of us we like the least.  It is only when we can see the reflection of ourselves through loving eyes that we can put the whole image back together and see the beauty of the whole.

Of course I really enjoy the series, and my local library got the remainder of the series when I requested them.  We had books 1 and 3.  Now we have them all, but there is a large wait list for each of them.  The problem is they are long books.  The last one is over 30 hours.  So sadly, my 2 weeks with the book end today and there is a 2 week wait list for me to complete the last third of the book.  Ah well, at least I get all the books for free.  So my complaining is minimal.

So 5 Decembers wasn’t available on Audible, so I started The Strain trilogy by Chuck Hogan and Guillermo Del Toro. I had watched the TV series and it was pretty good. The books are solid. The first audiobook was narrated by Ron Pearlman, aka Hellboy, aka Clay from Sons of Anarchy. Anyways, a fine commuter audiobook that keeps it moving, certainly not Hemingway.

You really suck at self promotion.

What if he offered to sit next to you and read it to you during your commute?

I’m still listening to The Story of Philosophy.  I’ve found that it I play it from the speakers in my home office, my daughter immediately departs for her room.  It’s like kid repellant.
