Judge key to Jan. 6 cases warns US faces ‘authoritarian’ threat

The judge who spearheaded the judiciary’s response to the storming of the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, blamed that event on “big lies” and warned that the country is in danger of turning toward authoritarianism.

As the federal court in Washington that Judge Beryl Howell once oversaw prepares for a historic trial of former President Donald Trump on charges of attempting to fraudulently overturn the results of the 2020 election, the jurist used a rare public speech Tuesday to lament that many of those convicted for their actions on Jan. 6 fell under the sway of falsehoods.

“My D.C. judicial colleagues and I regularly see the impact of big lies at the sentencing of hundreds, hundreds of individuals who have been convicted for offense conduct on Jan. 6, 2021, when they disrupted the certification of the 2020 presidential election at the U.S. Capitol,” said Howell, an appointee of President Barack Obama.

Howell, who served as chief judge of the District Court from 2016 until March and remains on the bench there, also suggested that the dangers evident on the day of the Capitol riot have not passed — in part because some Americans have become unmoored from facts.

“We are having a very surprising and downright troubling moment in this country when the very importance of facts is dismissed, or ignored,” Howell told the annual gala of the Women’s White Collar Defense Association at a downtown hotel. “That’s very risky business for all of us in our democracy. ... The facts matter.”

Covington father, son charged in Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol breach

A Covington father and son were arrested on Thursday, Nov. 30 and charged in connection to the Jan. 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol.

According to a release from the United States Department of Justice, 51-year-old Willard Purkel Jr., and his son, 27-year-old Colby Purkel, were charged with felony civil disorder. Additionally, they were charged with the misdemeanor offenses of entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly conduct in a Capitol building or grounds, and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building.

Court documents state the Purkels joined a crowd of rioters who forcibly entered the Capitol. They allegedly pushed against authorities, who were trying to close the building’s doors, and made their way into the building.

Additionally, the duo is accused of illegally remaining on the Capitol grounds after protestors were escorted out of the building. Documents state Willard had climbed on top of an armored truck before walking with his son to the other side of the building. The duo allegedly remained at the scene while authorities were clearing the area.

So brave of Speaker Johnson to defend those evil Antifa/FBI plants who made the brave MAGA patriots look bad by doing all the violence and law-breaking by making sure nobody can identify them. Who knew that Johnson was so sympathetic to the Deep State that he's willing to put his speakership on the line by protecting them? Such a hero to The Left, and he's managed to convince Conservatives that he's on their side!

Hostetter, who represented himself at trial, made a lengthy speech before learning his sentence in which he repeatedly described Jan. 6 as an "obvious set up," suggested the Oath Keepers and its founder Stewart Rhodes were tools of the FBI and claimed he was targeted by the government for showing "leadership skills" during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hostetter also claimed the crowd on Jan. 6 was filled with "crisis actors" and, most inflammatorily, that Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt was not actually killed.  "As you are aware, I don't believe Ashli Babbit was actually killed that day," Hostetter said. "I believe that was a psy op. That was staged."

Babbitt's mother, Michelle Witthoeft, frequently attends Jan. 6 hearings in support of defendants and was in the public gallery for Hostetter's sentencing. Afterward, she confronted him in the hallway but Hostetter declined to back down — asking her if Babbitt was cremated.

"This feels like it's staged," Hostetter said as he walked away.

When are we going to see Ashli Babbitt's long form death certificate?

That meatheads like Hostetter gain any kind of traction in the public arena saddens and angers me.  In his verbal diarrhea during sentencing, he noted where "presidential" candidate Vivek Ramalamadingdong called Jan 6 an inside job during the debate. One of five GOP candidates for president left standing is spewing this ****ing nonsense.

**** these people. They are corrosive.  If this tool dies in prison it would be a blessing.  And Vivek can **** right off too.

Supreme Court will hear a case that could undo Capitol riot charge against hundreds, including Trump

The Supreme Court on Wednesday said it will hear an appeal that could upend hundreds of charges stemming from the Capitol riot, including against former President Donald Trump.

The justices will review a charge of obstruction of an official proceeding that has been brought against more than 300 people. The charge refers to the disruption of Congress’ certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential election victory over Trump.

That’s among four counts brought against Trump in special counsel Jack Smith’s case that accuses the 2024 Republican presidential primary front-runner of conspiring to overturn the results of his election loss. Trump is also charged with conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding.

The court’s decision to weigh in on the obstruction charge could threaten the start of Trump’s trial, currently scheduled for March 4.

Will it matter that Congress had t suspend itself and cower on the floor while maniacs tried and eventually did break into the chambers sending them running for the escape tunnels?

Tune in and find out!

I am not confident.
