What could a nuclear war do to the climate — and humanity?

A new study on “nuclear winter” estimates that as many as 5 billion people could die from starvation.

...

The results were grim: a full-scale nuclear war between the US and Russia with their current number of warheads could lead to as much as 150 million tons of soot being injected into the atmosphere, thanks to massive fires ignited by the explosions. All that soot would quickly spread around the globe and block incoming sunlight, putting the equivalent of a shade over the planet and leading to drastic global cooling. In the cold and dark, crops would wither and die, as would the livestock that depend on them

East Pennsboro Township police received a complaint on June 14 about possible human body parts being sold online.

On or around July 8, police were called to Pauley's former home on North Enola Drive by a caller who reported finding possible human remains inside several buckets in the basement.

The district attorney's office said that after police conducted a search warrant and seized the buckets, a forensic pathologist confirmed the remains were human body parts. According to a criminal complaint, those parts included brains, a heart, kidney, spleen, livers, lungs and skin.

Pauley purchased the remains through Facebook Messenger, according to investigators.

The Orca Uprising is upon us...

There is no record of an orca killing a human in the wild. Still, two boats were reportedly sunk by orcas off the coast of Portugal last month, in the worst such encounter since authorities have tracked them.

California plagued with ‘mini-shark’ bugs that eat feet

Southern California has been plagued with tiny, aggressive sea bugs that eat human feet. Now, scientists finally identified the hungry culprit that has left many beachgoers in pain.

Scientists identified the bugs as water-line isopods officially known as Excircolana Chiltoni. Nicknamed “mini sharks,” these tiny crustaceans can grow to about 0.3 inches (0.8 centimeters) long and can form swarms of more than 1,000 bugs, according to Washington’s Walla Walla University.

The isopods tend to live in the shallow waters of the Pacific Ocean. They seasonally migrate up and down the coast in search of food.

The “mini shark” tends to go after human feet, biting into flesh and sucking blood. Like the animal itself, its bites tend to be small. However, individuals bitten by the crustacean can experience sharp pain.

“People attacked by the isopods describe the bite as being ‘painful’ and ‘surprising,’ noting how the bugs looked like a group of tiny piranhas had attacked their feet and ankles. Those attacked noted that the pain faded after 15 to 20 minutes,” reported Fox News.

Strong earthquake shakes Mexico

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake shook Mexico’s central Pacific coast on Monday, setting off an earthquake alarm in the capital.

There were no immediate reports of damage from the quake that hit at 1:05 p.m. local time, according to the U.S. Geologic Survey, which had initially put the magnitude at 7.5.

It said the quake was centered 37 kilometers (23 miles) southeast of Aquila near the boundary of Colima and Michoacan states and at a depth of 15.1 kilometers (9.4 miles).

Alarms for the new quake came less than an hour after quake alarms warbled in a nationwide earthquake simulation marking major quakes that struck on the same date in 1985 and 2017.

Dismembered body of woman found in suitcases after 'foul smell' reported at apartment

The dismembered body of a 22-year-old woman was found in two suitcases at an apartment in New York City this week.

Police were called to the scene of the incident at 315 Linwood Street in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn, at around 1.30pm on Wednesday after neighbours complained about a foul smell coming from the flat.

Other residents had told the building's security officers that the woman who lived at the flat had not been seen for nearly a week, police said.

When a security guard went to the apartment on the 6th floor and tried to enter for a welfare check, he was turned away at the door by the woman's 23-year-old boyfriend and another man, police added.

The guard then went downstairs to call the emergency services, but before cops arrived the boyfriend and the other man left the building with what looked like a suspected bag of evidence, reports ABC.

The security guard then went back upstairs and discovered two suitcases with the victim's remains in a bathroom alongside a meat cleaver, police officers said.

Cops added that a "large amount of blood" was found at the scene.

Neighbours told the New York Police Department that the woman had been abused by her boyfriend and had an order of protection against him.

Cops are now hunting the suspect and the investigation is ongoing.

Montana woman ignites fury after posting photos of shot and skinned husky dog

A western Montana woman’s post is going viral on Facebook after she claims she shot, killed, and skinned a wolf pup in Flathead County. According to Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, the animal she hunted wasn’t a wolf, but a dog.

The woman took to social media, claiming she “smoked” a wolf pup with pictures to prove it, including one of the shot and skinned animal.

However, there was one big, glaring problem with the post.

“We’ve determined that it wasn’t a wolf,” said Greg Lemon, Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Park's communication and education division administrator.

wolfdog-web.JPG

MTN is refraining from showing those photos in the post and identifying the woman, who has not been charged with anything related to the incident. MTN reached out to the woman on social media but did not immediately get a response.

According to Lemon, the woman actually shot a dog near Martin City outside of Kalispell.

“It’s always important to be certain of the animal you’re going to harvest,” Lemon said.

Great Falls native Rebecca Harding couldn’t agree more.

“It’s like, how could you ever mistake a husky like that for a wolf,” said Harding.

She owns four huskies of her own and loves the breed so much, she even dedicated a Facebook page to them.

“She’s poaching. She’s hurting our hunting community by posting that she went out looking for one specific animal and shooting a different one,” Harding said.

The sheriff’s department has identified the woman and FWP is now investigating whether she had the proper hunting license.

TV Garden Experts Killed and Fed to Crocodiles in Rare Seeds Dispute, Court Hears

An elderly couple searching South African brush land for rare seeds to sell online were kidnapped, robbed, murdered and fed to crocodiles in 2018, a court in South Africa was told on Tuesday, according to local media reports.

Rod Saunders, 74, and his wife Rachel Saunders, 63, had just posed for a selfie with BBC presenter Nick Baily after filming a segment for the BBC TV show Gardeners’ World, in which they sought out rare Gladioli flower seeds in the Drakensberg Mountain area, before they met their disastrous fate.

Mr. Saunders, a horticulturist, and Mrs. Saunders, a microbiologist, bid the television crew farewell in early February 2018 and set off to camp at a nearby dam. They told the crew they were off to harvest rare seeds to replenish the inventory of the Silverhill Seed shop they ran as an online store from Cape Town—and which could serve as the motive as locals in the area apparently complained about the removal of rare seeds for commercial gain.

On Feb. 10, just two days after the BBC crew last saw them, local police received a request for ransom. Three days later, police discovered that someone was using their ATM cards in the Kwa-Zulu Natal national park area.

On Feb. 15, Sayefundeen Aslam Del Vecchio, 39, and his wife Bibi Fatima Patel, 28, were arrested after cellphones used by the couple were traced to their residence.

The two were charged with the couple’s kidnapping and murder, and face life in prison if found guilty. “It was established on Feb. 13 that the defendants were drawing money from various ATMs which amounted to theft of $42,000 and there was the robbery of their Land Cruiser and of camping equipment,” a court was told Tuesday. “It is alleged that between Feb. 10 and 15 at the Ngoye Forest the accused did unlawfully and intentionally kill Rachel Saunders and between the same dates did unlawfully and intentionally kill Rodney Sanders.”

A third suspect, Mussa Ahmad Jackson, was also arrested but was released after cooperating with the authorities, telling them that the couple accused of the murder had complained that the foreigners were stealing seeds.

The remains of the couple, still entwined in what was left of their sleeping bags, were recovered by fishermen on Feb. 14 and 17 in the river, but due to the mutilation by crocodiles—and the frequency bodies are found in the river—they were not immediately linked to the missing botanists. Local fishermen reported that remnants of the sleeping bags, including zippers, were seen in the teeth of crocodiles months after the bodies were retrieved from the dangerous waters.
