Three STDs reach all-time highs in the US, new CDC report says

Health officials are raising alarm about a rise in STDs across the United States.

For the fifth consecutive year, combined cases of gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis have risen in the United States, according to a Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance Report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published on Tuesday.

"Combined they total 2.4 million infections that were diagnosed and reported just in last year alone," said Elizabeth Torrone, a CDC epidemiologist who worked on the new report, adding that the combined number marks "the most cases" ever recorded since monitoring began in the United States.

A rise in the prevalence and incidence of STDs can come with serious public health consequences and concerns, including infertility, drug-resistant gonorrhea and congenital syphilis, which can cause infant death.

"Yet not that long ago, gonorrhea rates were at historic lows, syphilis was close to elimination, and we were able to point to advances in STD prevention," Dr. Gail Bolan, director of the CDC's Division of STD Prevention, wrote in the new report's foreword.

"That progress has since unraveled. The number of reported syphilis cases is climbing after being largely on the decline since 1941, and gonorrhea rates are now increasing.

"Many young women continue to have undiagnosed chlamydial infections, putting them at risk for infertility."

Possible factors driving this rise in STD cases, which vary depending on where you live, include a surge in people getting tested and cases being diagnosed and reported. There's also a decline in people using condoms.

I blame the President for making it acceptable to have syphilis again. No need to even treat it when the end result is the highest office in the land.

Michigan data shows alarming increase in gonorrhea cases and a limited testing capacity

Michigan is experiencing a “significant increase” in gonorrhea infections across the state, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

In 2019, Michigan reported 18,264 gonorrhea infections. This annual number has already been surpassed as of Oct. 31, pointing to a 22% increase in reported gonorrhea infections for 2020, according to an MDHHS press release.

“This increase is even more alarming as it is likely an underestimate of the actual burden of disease due to decreased testing for STDs during the pandemic,” the press release said. “While under normal circumstances the response to such an increase would include a call for broader testing, there is a national shortage of collection kits and laboratory supplies used to test for gonorrhea.”

That shortage of testing supplies is related to the coronavirus pandemic. Last week, Dr. James Richard, lab director for Sparrow Health System in Lansing, told MLive that vendors aren’t manufacturing enough test supplies and when they are, they’re hard to get.

Distancing is for snowflakes.

Virtual just isn't the same as in person.

It's like eating steak and potatoes every day, then being told "Hear, you gotta make it one year off of cans of Starkist"

I'm not gonna survive 😔

Looks like they're on the upswing in the UK as well:

Gonorrhoea and syphilis sex infections reach record levels in England

England is seeing record high levels of gonorrhoea and syphilis sexually transmitted infections, following a dip during Covid years, new figures reveal.

People are being urged to practise safe sex to protect themselves and get tested if they may be at risk.

There were 82,592 cases of gonorrhoea in 2022 - up 50% on the 54,661 recorded the year before, the UK Health Security Agency says.

Syphilis cases increased by 15% from 7,543 to 8,692.

Super gonorrhoea cases are rising and could be fatal, WHO warns

Sexually transmitted infections often occur when having unprotected sex.

There are many kinds of STIs, including chlamydia and genital herpes which all come with different symptoms.

Some diseases can go unnoticed as the NHS advises Brits to get a check-up if they're concerned.

Now ahead of World Sexual Health Day on September 4, the World Health Organisation warned cases of drug-resistant gonorrhoea are on the rise.

The WHO also considers Neisseria gonorrhoea, also known as super gonorrhoea, a "priority microorganism" to be monitored for antimicrobial resistance.

New guidance on STIs requires countries to work towards improving access for better testing and diagnostic services.
