How right-wing news powers the 'gold IRA' industry

Dedicated viewers of Fox News are likely familiar with Lear Capital, a Los Angeles company that sells gold and silver coins. In recent years, the company's ads have been a constant presence on Fox airwaves, warning viewers to protect their retirement savings from a looming "pension crisis" and "dollar collapse."

One such ad caught the attention of Terry White, a disabled retiree from New York. In 2018, White invested $174,000 in the coins, according to a lawsuit by the New York attorney general - only to later learn that Lear charged a 33 percent commission.

Over several transactions, White, 70, lost nearly $80,000, putting an "enormous strain" on his finances, said his wife, Jeanne, who blames Fox for their predicament: "They're negligent," she said. A regretful White said he thought Fox "wouldn't take a commercial like that unless it was legitimate."

While the legitimacy of the gold retirement investment industry is the subject of numerous lawsuits - including allegations of fraud by federal and state regulators against Lear and other companies - its advertising has become a mainstay of right-wing media. The industry spends millions of dollars a year to reach viewers of Fox, Newsmax and other conservative outlets, according to a Washington Post analysis of ad data and financial records, as well as interviews with industry insiders. Former Fox News host Bill O'Reilly and former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani have promoted the coins, while ads for Lear's competitors have appeared on a podcast hosted by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) and Newsmax broadcasts of former president Donald Trump's political rallies.

An analysis by The Post of political newsletters, social media, podcasts and a national database of television ads collected by the company AdImpact found that pitches to invest in gold coins are a daily presence in media that caters to a right-wing audience and often echo conservative talking points about looming economic and societal collapse. The Post found no similar ads for gold retirement investments in mainstream or left-wing media sources in the databases.

These so-called "gold IRA" companies are not publicly traded, so their revenue, profits and ad budgets largely cannot be determined. Court documents filed by Lear say the company has about $200 million in annual revenue; Dale Whitaker, the former chief financial officer at another company, Augusta Precious Metals, said overall industry revenue likely approaches $1 billion a year.

Over the past decade, more than 30 customers in 20 states have sued a dozen gold IRA companies, including Lear. Federal regulators have sued four companies - two in the past year alone - claiming investors were systematically charged as much as triple the coins' value.

None of the cases have gone to trial; some are still pending. Of those that have been resolved, most have settled or been sent to arbitration, where outcomes are not made public. The companies have not admitted wrongdoing in any of the cases and say their customers have been adequately informed of the details of their purchases.

Trump wins again!

Trump-appointed judge torches former president's lawsuit against CNN

Late Friday night a judge appointed to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida by Donald Trump tossed out a lawsuit filed by the former president against CNN in which he claimed he was defamed when hosts on the network used the expression "The Big Lie" which he felt equated him with Adolf Hitler.

According to reporting from Poltico's Kyle Cheney, Judge Ragg Singhal dismissed the lawsuit with prejudice which puts an end to yet another Trump legal gambit.

In his ruling Singhal wrote that the comments were purely opinions and not statements of fact "and therefore not actionable."

The judge also wrote that a host claiming Trump was "being ‘Hitler-like’" is "not a verifiable statement of fact that would support a defamation claim.”

As CBS reported in 2022, Trump's lawyers argued, "that he's entitled to hundreds of millions of dollars in punitive damages because of CNN's use of the term the 'Big Lie' to describe Trump's 'stated concerns about the integrity of the election process for the 2020 presidential election.' Trump's lawyers say that the 'Big Lie' 'is a direct reference to a tactic employed by Adolf Hitler and appearing in Hitler's 'Mein Kampf.'"

Police stop pro-Trump groups from fighting each other at wild California GOP event

California Republicans overhauled their delegate selection process today in a manner expected to help Donald Trump in 2024, the Los Angeles Times reported.

But the most interesting part of the story was what happened between two separate groups of pro-Trump protesters outside the event. Apparently confused by social media posts, they were denouncing the very action that the Trump campaign wanted.

And the best part is that they ended up trying to physically attack one another – outside a California Republican Party meeting at an Irvine hotel – until police intervened to cool them off.

Here’s how the Times reported the protest piece of the story.

“Tensions flared…with pro-Trump protesters denouncing the move (to change the delegate-selection process), police getting called and two factions nearly coming to fisticuffs,” the report said.

“Protesters wearing red 'Make America Great Again' caps and carrying American, Trump and 'Don’t Tread on Me' Gadsden flags gathered outside of the committee meeting, chanting Trump’s name and 'America First!' After they tried to enter the meeting and were blocked by security guards, Irvine police officers showed up and tried to cool emotions."

“Later, two pro-Trump factions began screaming at each other, with one accusing the other of being white nationalists and the other responding that their foes supported open borders... They started jostling with one another and nearly came to blows until other protesters stepped between the two groups.”

Doesn't say much for the people she knows...

Trump attorney won't deny client tried to delete tapes: 'He's the most ethical American I know'

Alina Habba, an attorney for Donald Trump, refused to deny that her client tried to obstruct justice by deleting incriminating video tapes.

During an interview on Fox News Sunday, host Shannon Bream asked Habba how Trump could recover from a poll finding 78% of voters think he did something wrong.

Habba slammed special counsel Jack Smith's office for bringing additional charges against Trump for obstruction of justice because he allegedly ordered the deletion of surveillance tapes.

"No tapes were deleted," the attorney insisted. "He turned them over. He cooperated, as he always does... If President Trump didn't want something turned over, I assure you that is something that could have been done."

Habba, however, would not explicitly deny that Trump asked to have the tapes deleted.

"You rightly say that the tapes were turned over," Bream pressed. "I mean, they're in custody of the Justice Department. But the question is, was there an attempt to try to make sure that didn't happen?"

"If there was an attempt for him to not turn over documents or he wanted something deleted, do you not think that that's something he couldn't have gotten done? Let's just use common sense," she said. "But he never would act like that. He is the most ethical American I know."

TV host 'retracts statements' after agreeing with 'kill them all' comment at Trump rally

A television host attending Donald Trump's rally in Pennsylvania was forced to take to social media to retract the sentiment that he agreed with an erratic supporter's declaration to "kill them all" when talking about people from the "left, and the RINOS, the Globalist."

Right Side Broadcasting Network's (RSBN) Matthew Alvarez was working the rally at the Erie Insurance Arena in Erie, fielding comments from supporters outside of the venue.

Things escalated in a sinister way when one Trump supporter expressed that he was in attendance at the rally “to guarantee Trump gets back in, and get rid of the corruption that is in the White House right now.”

“It’s a disgrace,” the man continued in his remarks to Alvarez. “Joe Biden is a disgrace to this country.” Alvarez then took it upon himself to add: “So are all the left, and the RINOS, the Globalist."

“Kill them all,” the man could be heard saying in the mic. “Kill them all.” It was then that Alvarez seemingly agreed, declaring: “I agree with you on that.”

I just finished a book called American Midnight. It was about the lead up to WWI and a few years after its conclusion. Many Americans were thrown in prison for stating that they didn’t support America’s involvement in Europe.

These guys speak about killing the President and it’s considered folksy.

When I was growing up I was led to believe that those kinds of threats would get you a knock on the door from the Secret Service.  I guess not.
