There are many possible side effects that could be problematic (not saying this drug has them), such as other life threatening illnesses (e.g., stroke, cardiomyopathy, other cancers), liver failure, autoimmune disease (it's an antibody), etc.  The point is, it will still require more testing, so the result isn't "Hey we cured your cancer, but you're going to die of liver failure."

Of course. But if someone develops a cure for cancer, this is exactly how it starts. Nobody comes out and announces “WE CURED CANCER”. They’d say “we did a test, the results are remarkable. We are going to to way more tests.”  Which is exactly what is happening, Mr Negative Nancy.

My Negative Nancy stance comes from spending years in the industry and seeing many drugs which show promising and/or amazing results early on but never seem to hold up in the long run.  So, it's based on experience. I'll be as happy as anyone if this pans out, but I've seen too many claims of "This could cure cancer" that never come to fruition.

New Tower in China Brings Us a Step Closer to Space-Based Solar Power

 

Researchers at China’s Xidian University are claiming to have completed testing and inspection of a ground array that could pave the way to space-based solar power—a concept long heralded as a potential solution to our energy woes.

 

Researchers at Xidian University ran a successful test of the “world’s first full-link and full-system solar power plant” on June 5, according to a translated statement published today by the university. The plant is a 246-foot-tall (75-meter) steel structure located on Xidian University’s southern campus, and it’s equipped with with five different subsystems meant to foster the eventual development of space-based solar power arrays.

 

In theory, satellites could continuously collect photons from the Sun, convert them to electricity using photovoltaic cells, and wirelessly beam that electricity as microwaves back to receivers on the surface—like the one at Xidian University. While the idea sounds like a far-fetched engineering problem for our descendants, it was actually proposed as far back as the 1960s by scientist Peter Glaser. Space-based solar power could sidestep some of the fundamental issues with solar power collection here on Earth; there’s no need to wait for daylight or clear weather to harvest the incoming energy. But like most space-based solutions to real-world problems, the main issues would be the cost of launching these satellites and building the space-based solar collectors, in addition to some dicey technological and safety hurdles.

 

The newly built ground station is a part of the team’s space-based solar power proposal called OMEGA, which stands for Orb-Shape Membrane Energy Gathering Array. Once built and parked in geostationary orbit, OMEGA will collect energy from the Sun, convert it to electrical energy, and transmit it to Earth as microwaves via antenna.

Will we get global warming from these microwaves?

 

Microwaving the earth? What could possibky go wrong? I figure it cant be that dumb, but how are they transmitting power through microwaves that won't result in heat on the receiving end?

To avoid unwanted absorption of energy as it is transmitted from space to Earth you will need to make sure nothing is in it’s path, and use longer wavelengths so that it does not get lost heating moisture in the atmosphere.

 

My recollection is that you would need Earth-based antenna more than five miles in length to accomplish this, so maybe this small Chinese tower is a tiny pored of concept that wouldn’t make it to production scale, or they are OK with heating the atmosphere a little. Or most likely, I don’t know ****.

It’s clearly a massive engineering problem to do all this in space versus on the Earth and the fact that you would convert solar energy to electricity and then generate microwaves and then collect the microwaves on the ground with a bunch lost in transmission and then convert these to electricity with energy conversion losses every step of the way would mean that for this to be viable you’d have to have a huge (>10x) improvement in a availability of the solar array in space over ones on the ground.

ITER and associated Tokamaks are "hot" fusion NOT cold fusion...unless you consider 150 million degrees celsius cold.

Girl, 13, ‘leukaemia-free’ after world-first use of cell engineering therapy

 

A 13-year-old girl who relapsed with a particular type of blood cancer is now leukaemia-free after a world-first use of what scientists have described as the most sophisticated cell engineering to date.

 

Alyssa, whose family did not wish to give their surname, said she felt that taking the experimental new treatment for the disease would help others, adding “of course I’m going to do it”.

 

Scientists said that without the treatment, which came after chemotherapy and an initial bone marrow transplant failed to clear her cancer, her only next step would have been palliative care.

 

Speaking about the revolutionary new therapy, Alyssa said: “Once I do it, people will know what they need to do, one way or another, so doing this will help people – of course I’m going to do it.”

 

The teenager, from Leicester, received base-edited T-cells in the first ever use of a base-edited cell therapy at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH).

 

These pre-manufactured cells, from a healthy volunteer donor, were edited using new technology to allow them to hunt down and kill cancerous T-cells without attacking each other.

 

T-cells are a type of white blood cell which move around the body to find and destroy defective cells.

 

Alyssa, who was diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (T-ALL) in 2021, was given all the conventional treatments including chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, but the disease returned.

 

She then became the first patient enrolled onto a new clinical trial, funded by the Medical Research Council, during which she was given universal CAR (Chimeric Antigen Receptor) T-cells that had been pre-manufactured from a healthy volunteer donor in May this year.

 

Twenty-eight days after being given the treatment, Alyssa was in remission, researchers said, and was able to have a second bone marrow transplant.

 

She is said to be “doing well at home” as she recovers and continues with follow-up monitoring at GOSH.

One of the offshoots of info technology that have given us TitTok and police abuse videos and LOLCats is that smart people everywhere are talking to other smart people without the heavy hand of government or corporations filtering the conversations. Genius and innovation and inventive imaginative minds have been hoarded like gold for centuries, held captive by whatever force ruled their neighborhood. This paradigm has been shattered and not a lot of people see and understand that. Technology, particularly materials research which I follow, is exploding in a way never seen before and it is because of the free flow of information. We are on the cusp of transformational change if we can avoid killing ourselves off first.

Electricity is in the air as scientists discover new power source

 

Australian researchers have discovered a substance that converts air into electricity, opening the way for future devices to be powered by the air around them.

 

Scientists from Monash University discovered that an enzyme produced by a common bacterium found in soil naturally converts hydrogen in the air into electricity.

 

Many bacteria use hydrogen from the environment to generate power, but this enzyme – called Huc from the bacterium Mycobacterium smegmatis – does it in a unique way and is much more stable than others when isolated.

 

The research’s lead author, Dr Rhys Grinter from the Monash University Biomedicine Discovery Institute in Melbourne, said they had done a number of experiments to show Huc was generating power from air.

 

“It can turn hydrogen in the air into an electrical current that we can measure and that can power a small electrical circuit,” he said.

 

“We have only done this in a lab setting so far, but we’re confident that once it’s scaled up, it will be able to power a range of devices.”
