Lot of Caps fans very somber and angry about the team's direction this offseason but I think our GM has earned the benefit of the doubt he knows what he doing. It looks bad now but let's see what happens. The offseason isn't done yet.

2nd dumbest trade over the past 20 years with this team.  No defending the return for Johansson.  To only net a 2nd/3rd round pick for a guy coming off a 58 point season and was our best player at zone entry, is indefensible and moronic.

Im no huge Mojo fan, but he put up points and could -COULD- be an absolute beast if coached to use his size to contribute, when he's not scoring.. But a late 2nd and a 3rd? Wow.. Just SMH kinda wow.. All that to sign Kuzy and Burt who have the same size/soft attributes..

Kuz had 59 pts - worth 8.7 mil a year! Mojo 58 pts - is worth a (late) second and third round pick. :rofl89:

Read on another board how BM could of (easily) done that deal before expansion, then protected 4 forwards and 4 D.. (ie: kept Schmidt) I think GMBM has been asleep at the wheel a bit this off season..

Nah I don't agree. The Caps are counting on Vrana to step up and replace MoJo's role, they are very similar players. I know Johansson did very well in the regular season and got a lot of OT winners (including the big one against TOR to move on) but he's a skill finesse guy that blew COUNTLESS setups throughout his cap career.

I was cool when we let Perrault go to let MoJo fill his slot and I am cool with this. Hopefully Vrana can be even better than Marcus. We had to shed some salary and 90 is expendable to me. In fact, all the guys we let go were and are expendable considering Alzner hasn't been the same player since playoffs in '16.

Kuzy got a fat contract which I applaud because he's a hockey savant but savants generally struggle to adapt to convention and 92 needs to further his knowledge of the North American game before we can win and make history. He's a beast but will also make you want to shake him til he's whiplashed

What was the front office supposed to do? Going into the expansion draft, the only way we could have kept Schmidt is by leaving Burakovsky open by protecting only 8 skaters or losing Carlson if we protected Schmidt over him. You know what would have happened to Carlson? He would have been picked up by Vegas and swapped to another team trying to win the Cup this year for a 1st round pick (in a terrible draft year) because he has a year left on his contract and is ridiculously cheap (I think he's only being paid around 3M this season). We would be a laughing stock and GMBM's head would be on more of a stake then it is right now for some of you fans who aren't looking at the big picture. We didn't have the assets to trade to Vegas to prevent them from taking Schmidt either because of the Shattenkirk trade (which, in hindsight, was bad. But GMBM said it himself, this was a 2 year window and we went for it all. You can't blame them.) I love Schmidt, but there was no way.

Now, in terms of the Oshie deal, it's what a lot of fans wanted. I know there's concern about the length of the contract, but if you think about it we basically decided that it was him over Mojo. Clearly when we signed Oshie we knew we had to get rid of someone, and clearly no one is trying to take Orpik from us.

Our GM is NOT stupid. He decided that it was worth signing Oshie even if it meant getting rid of Johansson. Mojo has been a part of a losing culture for so long with this franchise that maybe it's not a big deal that we signed Oshie for just a million more to try and change our misfortunes. I'm not happy that we didn't get more for Mojo, but it is what it is. Every GM in this league knows our hands are behind our backs this offseason.

I am totally behind GMBM. He gave us an incredible opportunity to win the Cup two years in a row and it's the players and coaches fault for not executing. No GM can see into the future. He couldn't see that Orlov and Schmidt were going to become Top 4 defensemen, and he signed Orpik hoping he could sustain his good play in hopes of winning a Cup. At least he didn't trade away Filip ****ing Forsberg. He added so much depth to this team, you can't blame him. Our team is still very good. We have 2 elite centers and a great 3C. We have Ovi and Oshie and Burakovsky. Our top 6 will be fine no matter who fills it out. We will need some farm guys to step up, but who the hell doesnt? Look at Pittsburgh all year! Our defense will be fine, we still have 3 studs which most teams can't say and I have faith that guys from the farm can fill out. The Caps have drafted pretty well. And last but certainly not least, we have Braden ****ing Holtby. Nuff said.

Sorry for the rant. I love the Caps and I love you all. Times like this are never easy, but we gotta believe man

GMBM should have protected 8 skaters and tender: 8, 19, 65, 92, 2, 9, 88, 74, 70.  Vegas could have had their pick of 90, 83, 43, 20, 10, 44, 31, 4.  Chances are they take 90.

8-19-77

65-92-43

10-20-13

?-83-?

9-2

88-74

44-4/?(Bowey/Djoos)

70/31

Galiev went back to Russia and Paul Carey signed with the Rags.  The Shattenkirk trade hurts now more than it did last year.  Imagine having Sanford for cheap to plug in at 3LW and dropping 10 down to the 4th line (let's be honest, he was treated like a 4th liner in the playoffs).

That leaves the Caps with $9.2M in cap space but no glaring hole on defense.  As it stands now, the Caps have $9.2M in cap space and a MASSIVE hole on defense.

My biggest beef will always be with Trotz not rolling 4 lines and wearing down teams in the playoffs.  The team was stacked with scoring on all 4 lines, and heavy. By rolling two and a half lines, he wore out the top 6 and the bottom 6 were rusty whenever they got out there. And dressing 7 defenseman was worthless (with the exception of the game Nisky got railroaded).  I would have fired Trotz and brought in Sutter if I were in charge.  As it is, Trotz is on the hot seat from game 1...

MoJo did not replace Matty P. The problems for me with the trade was that there were both other moves that could have been made and the timing of the trade.

The Caps likely could have traded Carlson before the expansion draft as a way to begin clearing salary and getting a draft pick in this years draft. That also would have allowed the Caps to keep Schmidt. After the expansion draft the Caps (if not able to before ) the Caps could have moved MoJo for draft picks in this draft before they lost leverage with teams knowing the Caps HAD to dump salary. Caps should have, and I guess they still

may, move Grubauer. Lastly, they could've bought out Orpik.

These moves, or any combination would show forward thinking. Having to trade MoJo once every team knows you are up against the Cap with players to sign lessens the potential return.

First, the Orpik contract has proved to be a terrible contract that everyone immediately knew would be a drag on the team in the latter years. People can defend it all they want but his performances in the playoffs have been really bad.

Second, why on Earth couldn't our amazing GM have traded Carlson before the expansion draft? If Carlson is so great, some team would have traded for him in that timeframe.

Lastly, all GMs have mixed records but this team is still comprised primarily of GMGM's draft picks. The pickups for the 3rd and 4th lines did NOTHING in the playoffs when they were supposed to provide depth scoring and the defense got torched by faster teams.

Everyone is going to make mistakes, everyone is going to miscalculate. This is not the ideal offseason but he's earned the benefit of the doubt. Is Stan bowman suddenly Crap because he traded panarin and hjalmarsson and blew up the Blackhawks?

Just had to double check and see if it was a misprint.. Looking for something like "Sorry folks, it was actually Lars Eller traded for a 2nd or 3rd"  But nope, it was 26 yo, 58pt, 2way center/forward, PP specialist, Marcus Johansson..  Who has 2 years left on a pretty sweet contract..  We gave up more for an UFA Shattenkirk rental.. lol

This is my beef with Trotz.  He didn't roll 10-20-65 and 26-83-43 out there enough.  Hell, he scratched 10 most of the games and 26 was only on the ice for like 5 min/game, and that was only if they had to PK.  Those 2 lines are what made the Caps such a heavy, rough matchup and would have wore the other team down. Instead, Trotz overreacted to being down 2-1 to the Leafs and basically benched the bottom line. Started rolling with 7 defensemen and 11 forwards.  He should have rolled 4 lines, with the 4th line getting skipped a few times.  Obviously, the top 6 will see more ice, but tax the other team. Hit them. Be the team that other teams eventually started turning pucks over from getting forechecked for 40 min.  Teams tapped out.

You know how big of a role Johansson played?  Take away his 58 points, this was a valuable member of the PK, PP, and could play numerous positions.  And you want Vrana to step in and try to duplicate or better what Johansson did?  C'mon man, that's insane.  You're completely marginalizing what Johansson brought to the table.  Caps got fleeced and there is no other way of seeing it.

Look, I'm in no way saying that Johansson shouldn't have been traded.  It's just the timing of the deal and the return that I'm questioning.  This was an awful trade with a complete lack of foresight for how to fill Johansson's skates.  Call me a skeptic, but this trade is indefensible.  There are major questions in the top-6 (outside of Ovechkin, Backstrom, Oshie, and Kuzy), and big holes in the defense.

The way this Caps team is constructed right now, we'll be fighting for that wildcard spot.  Maybe that's a good thing, but this won't be the same regular-season powerhouse team that we've grown accustomed to watching over the years.  GMBM's plan of retooling without rebuilding is going poorly.

Did you not see what Chicago did this offseason?

Do you not know their history?  This pill would be a lot easier to swallow if there was some sort of playoff success that went along w/ the Capitals franchise.  Chicago has been up against the cap for the majority of the Kane/Toews years.  They are constantly making these hard/emotional deals when their season concludes.  This is nothing new for the Blackhawks.  They shed contracts and win....rinse/repeat.  3 cups within the past 7 years.  But yea...let's compare what GMBM is doing to Stan Bowman.  LOL.

Get a hold of yourself man smh saying the sky is falling, you even admit these things come in cycles. It's how the cap works.

Caps had their window and it closed. Had to shed salary. Happens. Go out there and get em next year.

If you can't see the difference between how the Blackhawks operate and how the Caps do business, then I dunno what to tell ya. Wrong decisions have been made regarding the makeup of this roster since the season ended.  You can even ask folks in this thread....I was a HUGE believer in the vision GMBM had leading up to the expansion draft debacle.  But I'm now questioning what his actual plan was seeing how things have gone downhill so quickly.

GMBM is having a horrid offseason.  Anyone who suggests otherwise or is fine with the direction of this team is looking at things through r/w/b colored lenses.

oh?

What did he do to earn the benefit

of the doubt? This team has gotten no further in the playoffs, had almost no draft picks this season, and was just forced to trade a good player for peanuts because of salary cap issues that EVERYONE ELSE knew was coming.

Was just reading the post article with GMBM comments. Wow, he genuinely seems totally unprepared and what he is saying doesn't make much sense. Some nonsense about this being a whole new team and needing to rely on some younger players more?? The top 6 plus a couple bottom 6 will be almost identical as will the defense and just about all the big guns are back. The Post article is pretty damning of his performance this offseason.
