How hard is it to get around Atlantic City without a car?

We're going to take Greyhound from DC. I just want to stay at a hotel that won't kill my pockets and is still nice.

Oh no. I did this 2 years ago with some friends. It was the WORST experience of my life. The bus trip there sucked, AC was a ****hole (putting it nicely), and I just didn't have a good time. Maybe it's because I was spoiled by going to Vegas but man that sucked. I really hope it's different for you both and you have an awesome time.

Hmmmmm maybe I'll amend the plans and take her to bush gardens instead.

Thanks for the heads up.

Best bet is to stay at The Trop, or another Casino on the AC strip, that way you can walk to many Casino's

The Virginia City Buffet inside The Wild Wild West Casino is probably the best buffet in AC

The Tropicana and Borgotta most resemble a Vegas Casino in AC than all the others

I had been to AC quite a few times before I ever went to Vegas..ever since I visited Vegas, I have not been back to AC LOL

Problem with Atlantic City is that everyone that goes there is expecting Vegas. It's not Vegas.

As long as you have low expectations going in, Atlantic City is fine. As for getting around on foot, I'm not sure how safe it is to walk around AC at night.

I went to AC two years ago, we stayed at the Trop. You don't need a car because you don't need to leave. There's casinos, bars, clubs, and tons of other things to do inside. The only time I stepped foot outside was to walk on the beach for like 5 minutes.

Went there not expecting Vegas, just expecting a lot of drinking and gambling and partying and had a blast :)

But I really can't wait to go to Vegas.

Most of the casinos are pretty much grouped into three sections of the Boardwalk. The AC Hilton and Tropicana are in the southern part; Trump Plaza, Caesars, Bally's/Wild West are in the middle part (as well as the Pier at Caesars, a nice shopping/bars area); and Resorts/Taj Mahal/Showboat are in the northern part. Going between each section is a nice little walk. There are three other casinos (Trump Marina/Harrah's/Borgata) in the Marina area, which you can't really walk to from the Boardwalk. Unfortunately, as others have said, Borgata is the nicest casino by far in AC.

I would think Sheraton has to have a shuttle that periodically transports people to the Boardwalk. Also, IIRC, there is a jitney (like a bus) that runs throughout the city, including to the Marina area. I'm sure one of the Atlantic City websites should have a schedule for it.

Finally, there is a section of outlet shops called "The Walk" which I don't think is too far from Sheraton and is pretty nice.

1. Don't stay at the Sheraton. There's no point.

2. It's easy to get around, there are taxis at every hotel entrance. But it looks like you're trying to save money or else you wouldn't be taking the bus to AC.

3. Look up buses to AC. I know there are a couple that have cheap fare that are geared towards old people for day trips to AC casinos. I also know there's a bus in Annandale for Asian people that I HEARD is free. I can't guarantee, though.

4. Stay at a casino on the boardwalk. I recommend Caesars because on the boardwalk side is an upper-class mall with high end stores, and in front of Caesars are the outlet stores. Plus you have the beach. The rooms in the Centurion Towers are nice, the rest are not so great in my opinion.

5. Borgata and Harrahs are the nicest, but I don't like them because they are surrounded by nothing. If you stay at these places, you pretty much have nothing to do but gamble unless you want to take a taxi ride to the boardwalk.

6. I don't go clubbing or see shows in AC, I go to gamble/shop/sun. I like AC better than Vegas because of the shopping options and the beach (not the cleanest beach, but it's still a beach).

7. The streets near the casinos are pretty safe at night. I'm thinking the unsafe parts are the residential areas of AC.

Hope this helps.

Also, elaboration of why I like AC better than Vegas:

1. Beach.

2. Beach bars.

3. Boardwalk.

4. I like the shopping better ( I know Vegas has that big mall, but whatever... )

Why you might like Vegas better. Note I've only been to Vegas twice (Luxor - low end, Wynn - high end) and been to AC like 50 times.

1. Clubs. No city can touch Vegas' nightclubs.

2. Hotter girls everywhere. The waitresses are hotter, the gamblers are hotter, the strippers are hotter, the tourists are hotter.

3. Better high stakes gambling.

4. Shows.

.

I definitely wouldn't say that.

I've only been to AC 3-4 times and 2 of those times I've seen someone get jumped right on the boardwalk right behind the Tropicana (facing the beach). One guy had his face kicked in before the guys fled and we saw part of his tooth on the boardwalk the next day.

My suggestion is to stay at a casino on the boardwalk and be careful if you decide to leave at night.

I don't know, maybe it's because I usually go during the tourist months when the boardwalks and beach bars are filled up even at night. I guess I could see something like that happening in the winter when all the boardwalk shops are shutdown for months.

Oh, one crappy thing about AC...

Almost everyone's an Eagles fan. I took a day trip to Borgata once, and I remember it being the playoff game where Reggie Bush got knocked the **** out by an Eagles CB, and it was sickening to see all the Eagles fans singing their fly eagles fly song.

I like the part of Caesers that extends over the water. Peach Mai Tais at the Continental with tapas and thai food. Next door, the place has 50% off bottles of wine and killer cold seafood plates. I forget the name of the place, but on the boardwalk is a hotel with no casino that I like. It's all black, cheap and the room are nice. It also has a cool club upstairs and the pool is clean.

Staying the night or weekend?

I can tell you street by street which is bad and which isn't as I am AC nearly every single day. To travel, you are either on foot or take a Jitney ( http://www.jitneys.net/ ) except they are now a lime green lol. They obviously have NJ Transit but, unless you need to leave the city, there is no need to take any buses within the city. I can check with my friends (have a few who work in various parts of the Borgata, Showboat, Harrahs, and the Trop.) if they have any comps but, being a weekend and Mothers Day weekend, the chances are probably slim. I'll check though...

I'm probably the most indecisive person in the world. The plan now is to take the train there from Union Station and I've decided to stay at the Borgata Because from reading reviews they seem to dominate just about every other place there.

Hopefully this goes well and I appreciate all of your help.
