Sounds like Jose is giving up the epl race and wants to play scrubs for the liverpool match.

Ā

His first season at United would be more dramatic with Liverpool as defending champions. In all seriousness the man has turned into a cartoon character wtf knows what he's about to do or why he's about to do it.

2 great movies today on ESPN. First was Maradona 86 about the run to the World Cup. The second one was very good. It was "The Opposition" about Chile's soccer team and the National Stadium. There was a lot of politics involved back then, the Chilean president was a socialist so the US hated him and while never directly kicking him out, they "supported" the coup putting Pinochet in charge.Ā

Ā

After that, the National Stadium where Chile plays their big games became this concentration camp where people were tortured and even killed. It was moving to me how these kind of things could happen in a public arena. FIFA came to the stadium to inspect it, and found nothing wrong. The Russians protested and Chile ended up going to the World Cup winning "1-0", that goal scored 11 on none. (The Russians never made the trip). Very touching story.Ā

Has Mourinho gone mad? I thought Brendan Rogers used to work under him why would he do something like this to him?Ā  All jokes aside Liverpool and City deserve better. I know at the end of the day nobody will be able to deny Liverpool thoroughly deserve to win the title but it's an injustice to them to even have this as a talking point right now. I hope the press in England refuse to give this another moment's attention but that might be asking too much. Gerard in particular really doesn't deserve this.

It's a trap. Jose playing mind games... Reds need to assume a full strength squad.

Yesterday's CL match was the equivalent of the beginning of the Dark Ages.

Ā

It was a sad, pathetic excuse for a 'soccer' match. Ā I almost expected to see Terry and Lampard nailing 2x4s across the goal in time for the second half. Ā It is one thing to play counter-attacking soccer, but Chelsea played such a bunker ball/hack it long game that I thought I was watching 1970s 3rd division stuff.

Ā

Mou may be the 'special one', if special means learning how to park 12 players behind the ball, because that is what the majority of yesterday's game looked like. Ā Chelsea supporters must be so proud - they feel the need to bunker against any team that can play good soccer (yet cry like little babies when someone like West Ham does it just a bit better).

Ā

The soccer gods MUST not let this abomination go on. Ā It would put soccer back in the horrible days of every match being 0-0.

Foreshadowing to what his tactics will be if he does use backups against liverpool? Play for a draw, give up on his clubs own chances at winning the league, but screwing liverpool and opening the door for manc?

The very LAST thing I'm going to do is defend Mourinho and Chelsea, and I didn't see any of the match.Ā

Ā

But from what I've read, here and elsewhere, that was an old school away performance in Europe that sets them up for the second leg. Two legged football is all about getting through. Even more so when it comes to the semi-finals of the European Cup. Plus they lost Cech early didn't they so it was little surprise he protected the woeful Schwarzer.Ā

Ā

No question it's horrible to watch, but from Chelsea's POV it's perfect. If they'd played open, they may be looking at a few goals deficit next week. Now they can open up more at home. That's European football guys. Always has been. Always will be.Ā

Ā

Ā

Brilliant news on Barca. At least they'll probably take Reina off our hands now.Ā

Ā

You're once again lumping me in with three quarters of London football fans who support United for the trophies and NEVER respond to anything objective I post......

Ā

You got pulled for your words here. NOWHERE else.Ā

Ā

And arrogance was being polite.Ā

Barca already have a deal in place for Ter Stegen who is Germanys number 2 keeper behind Neuer. Good young keeper who is not being bought to be the number 2 there. You will have to find another home for Reina.

You clearly have not watched much two leg European football. What Chelsea did is the 101 of how to play a first leg away from home - keep things tight, get the crowd out of the game and hope to nick an away goal. 0-0 away from home in a two leg match is job done.Ā

What do you think it's a result of? I know exactly the type of supporters he is referring to and they wouldn't be invited to watch a United game at my house but the fact that they exist and they are as obnoxious as they are means we are doing something right.Ā Once again, if United become a sympathetic favorite to win the title in a couple of decades things have gone horribly, horribly wrong.Ā Ā

@GHH and MartinC,

Just because I'm not English, don't assume I know nothing about European soccer. Ā I'm not surprised that English fans are OK with this type of soccer, as basically 2/3 of the EPL uses the same method every week. Ā Effective - sure. Ā Fun to watch - not on your life.

Ā

Neither of you addressed the issues of my post. Ā It was a horrible game to watch. Ā One team tried to play soccer and the other just tried to get in the way. Ā I was hoping that this old style (perfected in the 90s by the Italians) had gone away. Anyone can teach anti-soccer (hence my dig @ Mou). Ā It takes real skill and expertise to teach good, attacking/flowing soccer.

Ā

Watch today's game and see the difference.

Wooo there man.Ā

Ā

Whilst Martin was a little more direct, I acknowledged it was boring as all Hell to watch. But that's been the staple for an away performance in Europe the past 60 odd years of European Competition. Keep it tight, maybe nick an away goal. Professional job done.Ā

Ā

Hate to watch it, but bottom line it's a high stakes results business for these guys. Rafa was the worst for it. His philosophy, even in domestic games, was you start with a point so you defend it and anything else is a bonus. It soured me a lot and I stopped going regularly, loaning out my S/T and picking and chossing games.

Ā

But if I wanted one man to set a team up to get a result in Europe, I'd take Benitez over Guardiola. Sad as that is.

Yeah? Was it the complements I paid to Liverpool or perhaps it was when I said United wouldn't be competing for a title right away?

You can be as facetious as you like but being as we had a discourse on this already I'm sure this go-around is boring the living piss out of everyone so I'll leave it at the above replies that made the point.Ā

On second thought my original post would have further stooped to a level I no longer want to stoop to. Making up hidden meanings behind someone's posts because they support a club you don't like is something you could probably get worked out in therapy.

Real getting dominated early on, Kroos is really impressive so far.

Ā

Although you'd expect that given Pep's record at Bernabeu.

Ā

That made me think back to the Del Bosque days at Real when they could do absolutely nothing for a period and then end a game with 3 counter attacks.

On a completely different subject, I would like to see Sterling get a real number. I would also like to see him get his own song. GHH, why don't you get some of the Scoucers in the Kop working on songs for Sturbridge and Sterling?

Teams have been playing that way in the knock out stages in Europe for donkey's years - not just English teams either. The Italian teams were experts at that style of football as you suggest. It's a results business and Chelsea are trying to win a Champions League trophy using the resources they have in the best way they can.

There is a heck of a lot of skill and discipline in the kind of defensive performance Chelsea put on. Not that many teams - or coaches - can do it effectively which is why many teams use attack as their primary strategy. The standard of defending individually across Europe and collectively is a shadow of what it was. Some of it is because referees protect attacking players too much to be fair.

Defense is as important as offense in the NFL and that's just the same in soccer. How many World Cup semi finals or finals are 'good' games to watch?

Again 0-0 and for Chelsea first part of the job done.
