Burgold
Yeah, I don't buy it either, PCS. The art of photography isn't just the tool. It's choosing exactly the right spot, understanding lighting conditions and when to take it. Knowing how to "develop" the shot or crop it. There's a lot of art to photography. I agree that technology has made it simpler and tools like photoshop have made it possible for some shortcuts, but that doesn't discount the craft, discipline, and skill that makes photography... art. Besides, this is 19th Century discussion. When the camera first came out it was thought to be the death of painted portraiture. It wasn't an art form just science. The art of photography isn't the machine just like the art of painting isn't the brush or palette knife. It's the eye, mind, and hand. That's how I feel about this thread as well. As for the copyright thing. Yeah. It's something to be concerned about a bit. I know of 4-5 professional photographers I chat with from time to time online have recently had their photos "lifted" by others to use. 2 of them had it done by a municipality. It can be a bit worrisome for anyone, especially the pros. Yeah, I remember when I first put my paintings online several people cut and pasted them and even printed them out for posters for their room. Some even bragged to me about it thinking I'd be honored that they chose to steal my work over all others. Intellectual theft in art and music is an enormous problem and one made even worse because most people don't even think of it as theft.

Sikbug
I've been slacking on posting new stuff. I went to Japan and bought a used Fuji x100s which I absolutely love. It's a great camera and it's so much easier to carry around every day when I don't want to carry my DSLR or film cameras. Only thing is, the battery life sucks, I have three batts for it now. Here are a few shots from the last week here in NYC, been a lot of activity with the protests. I'll make a separate post later with some Japan shots I've been meaning to post. PCS
Nicely done. The sarcasm here is so biting, you may come away with marks on your arm. The Evil Genius
I took these on the last night of our vacation in Kaanapali, Maui. Since I'm not a camera guy, they were taken with my cell. Thought they came out ok. Just thought someone might want to see a Hawaiian sunset.
The Evil Genius
Ok here a few more of the road trip to Hana. Again, all taken with my cell camera.
The Evil Genius
BTW, I visit the Peter Lik gallery every time we go to Maui. IMO, his photos are ****ing amazing.
PCS
They are that. He and Art Wolfe are two "modern" landscape photographers that inspire me. I think that one sarcastic article I posted above hits a bit on some of the vitriol thrown his way. Nice photos btw. Don't have to be taken with a big ol' dslr to be a nice pic. The Evil Genius
Thanks! To be fair though, Maui offers a lot of opportunities for good pictures.
PCS
Still need to see it enough to take the pic. Mind you,I'm resisting the urge to ban you for posting them since it's cold and grey here.
Mad Mike
A recent photo trip to Ocala. I Wish I could show you the full resolution images. This is where the D800 really shines. Mad Mike
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice. Nothing quite like the resolution of that full/FX format there Mike. Good stuff. Thanks. You guys were my inspiration. My NY resolution is to shoot more and work harder on the craft. I've been shooting almost strictly w/ my Sigma 50 lately. Sweet lens. It's such a beautiful spot. Going back tomorrow better prepared. Same spot plus Alexander Springs on hopefully a nicer day.

Mad Mike
Thanks Sikbug. Just a few shots from the return trip. I've got hundreds of potentially great shots to edit but it could take some time. I have some dust or oil on the image sensor and every pic has a dozen little dots that need to be found and cleaned up. I just ordered a sensor cleaning kit. mcsluggo
I meant to ask this a couple of months ago.... does anybody here still get film developed? and if so where? I had been going to a camera shop around the corner from Ford's theater, across the street from the FBI building... but it is gone now. I had THOUGHT the market had consolidated enough to support that one place (it had all sorts of high end equipment in there, and was always fairly full) ... but i guess not. Sikbug
Nice shots PCS, I really like the balloon ones. mcsluggo, I get film developed, but I live in NYC, there are places all over here to get them done. I go to a little spot run by this nice old chinese lady here in Brooklyn who does it for me in about 10-15 mins. There seems to be a handful of them all within a few miles from me though. I also scan my negatives, which is kinda a pain, but the quality is a lot higher if I decide to print them.

I also scan my negatives, which is kinda a pain, but the quality is a lot higher if I decide to print them. what negative scanner do you use? (i have 8 or 9 binders full of old negatives. about half are mine, and half were my parents, or older. Most are 35mm, but some are those tiny 110 strips and some of the others are anything from medium format (120 size, or therabouts) all the way up to a few "plate size" negatives, that are six inches across or more. If i ever DO get these scanned in, i assume that i will be scanning the 35 mm in myself (a tedious process, i am sure!) and will be paying somebody else to do the odd-size negatives (an expensive process, i am sure!) it'd be nice to have a scanner that could handle the medium format negatives (since i still OCCASIONALLY run a roll through some crappy medium format cameras I bought when i was in China), and or the tiny 110 strips (because my parents had a ton of those)... but both of those would be "nice to have" not "have to have" options. I have to balance "nice to have" against the fact that i am a cheap ****!
