We have always been a bit strange about these things in England ........ I think the last sentence of that article is the most relevant to the current situation. skinsmarydu
Boortz played the "horribly oppressed white man" angle pretty hard too, but I'm not sure where that fits in the fiscal/social conservative construct. I love the station he was on,but not his (sometimes) crazy rantings. and now they've replaced him with Rush, and hubby says he thinks they've cut Clark Howard in the midday hours. A true tragedy here, I do declare.
Larry
Completely OT, but then this thread could use a good hijack, anyway: Recall an exchange from Boortz, once. His engineer, Royal, mentioned that he had gone out clubbing last night, with his friend, Sloan. Boortz observed that, whenever he thinks of those two names, Royal and Sloan, out bar hopping, that you know that he thinks of? Royal chuckles and says that yes, he knows. Boortz then speculates that his call screener, Belinda, probably doesn't know what they're talking about. Belinda confesses that, indeed, she doesn't know what they're talking about. What's so funny about the names Royal and Sloan, and why do they automatically assume that she doesn't know what they're talking about? Just a random Boortz thought. skinsmarydu
God rest his soul. Royal Marshall was the calming effect, every once in a while. Belinda's even lost her southern drawl.
visionary
http://bigstory.ap.org/article/uruguay-poised-legalize-gay-marriage-nationwide Uruguay lawmakers vote to legalize gay marriageUruguayan lawmakers voted Wednesday to legalize gay marriage, making the South American country the third in the Americas to do so. Supporters of the law, who had filled the public seats in the legislative building, erupted in celebration when the results were announced. The bill received the backing of 71 of the 92 members of the Chamber of Deputies present. "We are living a historic moment," said Federico Grana, a leader of the Black Sheep Collective, a gay rights group that drafted the proposal. "In terms of the steps needed, we calculate that the first gay couples should be getting married 90 days after the promulgation of the law, or in the middle of July." NavyDave
I still do not agree with the redefinition of marriage. However comma putting deviant activity on the same level playing field as normal marriage may help out our society in other areas. The alleged original complaint that Civil unions weren't good enough was the benefits angle ie Dead hubby passing assets to widower or dead wife passing assets to her widow. Now imagine if the normals decide to engage in same sex marriages for similar benefits. Rich fathers marrying their sons and Rich mothers marrying their daughters... the end of the death tax. Mark Dayton's promised signature will make the state the 12th in the U.S. to do so. The Senate vote of 37-30 came four days after the House passed the bill on a 75-59 vote. A cheer erupted in the chamber after the vote was announced, and spectators in a small gallery area stood and applauded. Minnesota will become the first state in the Midwest to make gay marriage legal via a legislative vote. Iowa legalized same-sex marriage in 2009 through a court ruling. Last week, Dayton, a Democrat, called the bill "one of those society-changing breakthrough moments." Aides said he was likely to sign the legislation in a ceremony Tuesday evening on the front steps of the Capitol in St. Paul. Under the legislation, gay couples will be able to get married starting on Aug. 1.
