I think Brown is the more talented player. And he's definitely the better guy at sniffing out a play and getting to it. He reads and reacts very well. More athletic, too. But... Foster is playing downhill more often and getting to his coverage responsibilities much better than Brown is at the moment. This is without studying the film hard, so it's just a bird's eye view so take my take for what it is. If I watched the film with a closer eye my opinion may change. One take I have no qualms about, though, is that if either LB is playing sideline to sideline instead of downhill they play a much worse game. Hate to say this about Brown, but I’m not sure how football smart he is. His instincts seem a bit slow which allows linemen to get to him (which he seems to struggle with as he’s not much of a stack and shed guy). When he’s shooting gaps or jetting our to the flat, he’s looked quite good. As I said above, I think he tends to get caught up in the trash on outside runs. With that said, I’d assume the outside should be the safeties and corners, or our OLBs are losing contain. Anyway, although Foster is definitely less athletic than Brown, I agree that he’s playing better than Brown ATM. Seems a headier player.

I think if that's the case, we can let Preston Smith walk and aim to draft a pass rush/EDGE specialist high in the draft next year. Anderson can then rotate in for certain packages and then by the time Ryan Kerrigan is ready to hang his cleats up (or if we move on from him in a couple of years), he steps in as starter. Gonna have to watch that a bit more closely with him.

Exactly the plan. A 2nd round LBer that needs a year or two to develop behind legit starters. Dont over pay Smith, replace with Anderson and draft another one. Like a competent team. I'd take one for sure, but I dont think the priority meets value this year. I really want Irv. The Bama TE, but am high one outside speed backer/PRush specialist mainly. skinny21
Given how successful we were in getting sacks last year compared to this year, I find myself wondering what the difference is (can’t be all about Galette). So I’m thinking some combo of the following: 1) we sold out the run D to focus more on pass pressure, 2) Manusky has tweaked the scheme/responsibilities to focus more on contain for the OLBs, 3) our corners are worse (and/or Manusky is scheming like they are - playing them off more) and so qbs are getting rid of the ball quicker. So, in terms of what positions to add/address, I’d see what McKinzy offers these last games (although he may be inactive with McPhee suiting up), because we could re-sign McPhee, roll with those 4 and probably not have much of a drop off. The reason to do that, IMO, is that while I love the idea of adding a rusher, we might need a corner more, we certainly need help at oline, and we could really, really use a weapon in the pass game. I’d consider TE a pretty high priority as well - we’ve gotten lucky with good health there this year, but Davis is old, Reed is injury prone (and hasn’t quite looked like his old self), Smith really needs a good TE/security blanket, and they often take time to develop. Semi sidenote, I think SDH is going to be a player for us. Anyway, BPA with focus on oline, but I’m looking hard at corner, TE, Wr, OLB and a qb to groom. Thinking Skins
There have been 5 games this year where Watson has been sacked 4 times or more. I feel good about our defensive front.

Yeah, I think Sprinkle is a fine TE to have, especially if we’re going to be a run oriented team. He’ll have a place here regardless (whether it’s as a number 2 or 3) going forward. However, and no offense to him, but I see him with a ceiling of an average, at best, pass catcher. So I don’t blame you for bringing him up, but he doesn’t fit my calculus of a pass catching weapon that Smith could use in the future.
Warhead36
Reg. Zack Brown, he's got good straight ahead straight line speed, but has absolutely zero change in direction/lateral quickness. That's why he can blow up plays at the line but when he has to run sideline to sideline we get gashed. Foster is smart and doesn't blow assignments but athletically is very limited. Honestly, we need to go full time 4-3 next year. Allen and Payne at DT. Ion at one DE, Kerrigan at the other, but draft someone to replace him in 2020(if not outright in 2019). Let Smith walk as he's going to probably command too much money. At LB we go Anderson/Foster/Brown but look to upgrade from Brown and Foster with more speed. Nick Saban thought Anderson would move to the inside when he was drafted. I agree. But in a 4-3, which of the three LB should play Mike? It has to be a true downhill thumper; maybe that’s Foster. Trouble is, Brown has not covered as well so I think he could be weakside. That leaves Anderson at Sam. Or, I’d have Anderson in the middle, Brown at weak to use his speed, and Foster at strong to take on TE’s.
