REDSKINS ANNOUNCE 2016 TRAINING CAMP ENHANCEMENTS

RICHMOND, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today a series of new initiatives to enhance the experience for families and travelers headed to training camp 2016 at the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center in Richmond, Va.

Among these enhancements is Road Trip to Richmond Travel Packages, which will offer fans a unique, family friendly opportunity to explore Richmond. Through the team’s partnerships with Richmond Region Tourism, The City of Richmond, Kings Dominion and the Science Museum the packages offer passes to some of Richmond’s favorite attractions, in addition to exclusive Training Camp gear. The Redskins Richmond Passport Program also launches this year, with its primary focus to drive guests to Richmond-area businesses with ‘Redskins Special Offers’ unique to each venue. Richmond venues interested in applying for the program can visit: www.redskins.com/passport.

As part of the Washington Redskins’ commitment to create a destination for families, a new line-up of special events such as Kids Day, Football Fiesta, the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders Annual Summer Camp and Fan Appreciation Day will be highlighted on the schedule – with the return of “Jerseys Off Our Backs” presented by Bon Secours on Fan Appreciation Day, a successful feature where players randomly select a child to receive their jersey after practice.

The Training Center will also feature a Redskins Stage and screen, providing fans an exciting new view of live radio broadcasts from ESPN 950, a live social media feed and highlight videos each day. The Legends Showcase will offer fans a new experience in connecting with alumni and the team’s history.

The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation will host weekly activities on the new Redskins Play 60 Playground and a Punt, Pass and Kick program on the field. In partnership with Good Sports, the Foundation will award $50,000 in sports equipment to a number of youth non-profits and schools. Selected organizations will be on-site to receive their items in a special ceremony on the Redskins Stage on Kids Day.

Bon Secours Health System will be onsite daily, offering a variety of health screenings as well as wellness and prevention information. The health system will conduct health screenings focused on heart disease and stroke, diabetes, women’s health, pediatrics, orthopedics, sports medicine and more. The Bon Secours Class-A-Roll, Virginia’s first mobile learning kitchen, also will be onsite from Aug. 7 – 14.

Admission at camp is free for all fans. Following practice, Redskins players and coaches will be made available to sign autographs and take pictures with fans, schedules permitting. All scheduled dates and practice times are subject to change.

Any joint practices with either of the visiting teams in preseason? I have a friend who is a huge Bills fan and would likely love to go to one of those. I already snagged a couple of pregame field passes for that game through the Redskins Rewards program.

Sounds like some decent family friendly focused stuff. I grinned ear to ear when I heard Larry Michael's reminder that this will be the first time the Redskins open training camp in Richmond as defending NFC East champs. Hopefully that's the beginning of a streak. Some new places to eat and drink near training camp this year in nearby Scott's Addition.. Here's a googly map.

The drill has replaced the traditional stationary tackling dummy.

“It’s the perfect tool to use as far as form tackling,” Packers safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix said. “You get your arms around it to wrap it up and take it down.”

One longtime NFL assistant said it was the best simulated tackling drill he has seen in his three decades in the league as both a player and coach.

Articles says the Lions use the same donut tackling drill. Steelers use a remote controlled tackling dummy. I wonder what the skins are doing in the post-CBA limited contact practices.

Could the skins use fans as tackling dummys ala Rudy?

edit - i tried adding a photo of the tackling donut but wasnt allowed.

Does the road trip to Richmond thing allow fans to see a training camp practice? Or just explore Richmond? I didn't see anything about seeing practice

I didn't look at the prices. Probably worth comparing costs for what you really want to do and seeing how much it would cost you on your own. I love how they give you a sharpie with the Crowne Plaza package. One tip: avoid the hotels in mid town near the training camp. Go a little further west if transportation isn't an issue, and you don't want to pay the downtown rates. Those downtown hotels are fairly nice though. Camp is always free. You just have to get there (early if you want a good view).

This is sound advice. Some very nice hotels in the downtown eastern side of Richmond and the far west end. Mid town would be a last resort.

Yeah, and don't stay in any hotels, motels, or inns on Midlothian Turnpike in Richmond.

Bad element around there.

Midlothian Turnpike out in Chesterfield County is all right though. There is a very nice Days Inn out there. Right next to the Chesterfield Towne Center and a Hooters establishment. :)

Will a schedule be announced soon?  I'd like to see some 7v7 or even better 11v11.

BTW:  The tackling wheel (doughnut) is used for so much more than just tackling.  It's one of the best innovations I've seen in over 30 years of coaching.

schedule, as in which days practice will be open to the public? if so, yes that's been out for a while now.

if you mean a schedule such as what types of practices they'll have, I'm not sure if they release that kind of info. but I could be wrong.

Yeah, I'm looking for more detail.  I don't really want to drive to Richmond to watch them stretch!

Training camp practices never involve only stretching. They have 7s vs 7s and 11s vs 11s almost all the time I believe. I'd suggest making it to one of the practices that isn't walkrhrough though

If I remember right, the warm-ups will be in the morning, with practices in the afternoon.

That could change at the discretion of Coach Gruden, though.

Actual schedule activities will probably be released closer to camp.

For the out of towners:

Allen & Snyder stay at the Jefferson hotel. Even if you don't want to see them, stop by the historic bar for a drink. They have decent HH prices. It's not a sports bar.

Players stay at the Omni Hotel across the street from the famous Tobacco Company bar & restaurant. Again, not a sports bar. You will find a lot of players Saturday night downstairs at the Tabacco Company (or so I've heard).

Places near training camp to hit: Ned & buzzes bbq, fat dragon, hardywood brewery (food trucks & music start at 5pm on thursdays)

Also, new breweries/bars in the Scott's Edition section of RVA. West of TC on the other side of Boulevard.

Hey Guys! Long time viewer of this page but this is my first post! I went to training camp 2 years ago and it was a regular practice I went to, I remember after it was over it was impossible with all the people to meet some of the players and get autographs.  Well this upcoming week, I have a work trip to Washington, DC.....I live in Greenville, NC, used to go to a Skins game a year but haven't been since 2009....On the way back on Friday the 29th for the walk through practice that morning.....I have a couple questions....

On my work trip, I am able to take my son and wife.....they will be with me in Richmond on Friday, I couldn't remember, but my son he is 4 and do they have any bounce houses or stuff like that for kids?

I heard last time, that it is easier to meet players and get autographs after the walk through practices....that true?

Any suggestions for places to eat while in DC for a whole week would be greatly appreciated also! Thanks guys!

What else is it used for? Just curious, it seems like a great tool.

Any word on the parking situation? I did not go last year. The two previous years I parked at a private business (all day parking for a $5 donation to benefit needy folks in the local area. It was) near the Greyhound Bus building on Hermitage Road.
